To remove the toy baby feeding bottle from my dd's new doll bath and feeding set?

I was brought up to think that breast feeding was a strange and rather disgusting thing to do.

Luckily managed to overcome this myself and b/f both dc for 5 months and 14 months respectively.

Took dd to a toy shop today and she chose a doll bath and feeding set. Unpacked it for her when we got in and there is a feeding bottle in there. I know it might seem a bit precious but it irritated me slightly, as though it was a mandatory piece of equipment for all babies/dolls.

Or

I am taking it all rather too seriously?

LovelyTinOfSpam - you are sooo right!

Ninkynork · 31/05/2009 12:34

The manner by which milk is delivered is important though, for normal development of the palate and the teeth. Someone on MN can tell whether children have been FF or BF, she's a SALT. Moondog perhaps.

(But I am not one to talk as my two-year old still has a lot of milk during the night so I am undoing all my good work)

juuule · 31/05/2009 12:34

Nancy - people are getting het up because you are telling them they have no real memory of things that they know they have. You are saying they don't know their own mind.

As I have said, I do have genuine memories around 2yo. I won't relate them here but we have established that they are genuine.

Kimi · 31/05/2009 12:35

LOL god everyone is picky today.
Sons can be as gay as they want I don't mind.
Was taking the piss as it would seem bottle feeding makes you a bad mother weather it is breast milk, FF or vodka you put in.
Giving a child a baby bottle to play with is bad bad bad ,stick to guns (real loaded ones) and a nice golliewog,
And I really wish I had had a better DR then the one who saved my life and supported me through 2 pregnancy's as he told me not to breast feed he rendered me worthless and should have let me die.........

sunfleurs · 31/05/2009 12:35

Ninkynork, that is fascinating! I wonder how she can tell, is it by formation of teeth or something? Think hard, who is it so I can bombard her with questions? .

violethill · 31/05/2009 12:37

So is it the manner in which milk is delivered or whether it's FF or BM which is important ninky? Because you contradict yourself in that there post!!

FWIW, I would strongly suspect that a baby who is usually fed from the breast and has the occasional bottle of EBM would have the same palate and teeth development as a baby fed just from breast.

Um, I hate to say it, but many people of my generation (70s person) were FF and I haven't noticed tens of thousand of people having to have corrective surgery to their mouths and palates.

Everyone seems to eat and drink just fine.

There is also an argument that cosmetic dental work, much more widespread now than when I was young, has a detrimental effect on jaw development etc. Again I don't notice chilren with braces having to eat through a straw.

How silly.

Plus, even if it was the case, I doubt that the occasional bottle of EBM would have any impact. So bottles still not evil per se.

I think you're the one who's contributed to most of the myths leonie!! Your posts have ranged from absurd and self contradictory to downright offensive.

Anyway hope your tits have a nice day out - they deserve it after all their hard work doing that terrible chore of breasfeeding you were moaning about.

Ninkynork · 31/05/2009 12:42

Hmm, so I do. I just thought I'd toss it into the debate because I too found it interesting that someone could tell. Presumably whether they had been fed EBM or FF as opposed to BM.

It is also thought that EBM isn't quite as good because BM changes rapidly to meet a baby's needs, having more water on a hot day for instance and having very specific antibodies depending on what the baby has been exposed to.

LovelyTinOfSpam · 31/05/2009 12:43

What's a "bewbie"?

violethill · 31/05/2009 12:44

I think you need to do your research a little more thoroughly rather than tossing things into the debate then ninkynorks!

juuule · 31/05/2009 12:44

"There's a lot of myth and misconception out there about breastfeeding. "

Very true. And you haven't helped to dispel them one little bit. In fact, I think you've probably made things a whole lot worse.

I am in favour of bfing but seeing the irrational thoughts that have been put forward I feel inclined to defend formula and bottles. I dread to think what someone considering bf-ing for the first time would think reading this thread.

Kimi · 31/05/2009 12:45

Can I also add that I remember being pushed along in my pram, I remember moving in to a new house when I was 4 I do not remember the old one, DS2 will tell you he has never been to disneyland paris age 3 even though I have the photos to prove it, I had a dog as a child that I do not remember.

Ladies please can we all respect that everyone is different, we all do what we believe is the right thing for our children, no parents wants to do badly by their child and in the time I have been a mumsnetter I have had some wonderful advice, support and fun here, I have grown as a parent and a person and some of the posters I respect most are the ones who have crossed swords with me.
How ever you feed your child you are doing your best, I will still champion BF mothers even though I was never one myself, but some of you need to step back and live and let live a bit.
It is a lovely day we are so so lucky as we have beautiful healthy children so shake hands and go enjoy them instead of bitching her, we are all trying to do the same thing, make it through another day without screwing upour off spring too much...enjoy

LovelyTinOfSpam · 31/05/2009 12:47

Well put juuule and exactly one of the points I have been trying to make. Totally off-putting for anyone thinking about BF.

If I knew some of these people in RL I would be very tempted to FF just to irritate them. Not very grown up I know but there you have it. Insufferable self-righteousness is not a trait that people normally aspire to.

violethill · 31/05/2009 12:47

LTOS -

'bewbie' (noun) : 'a portable bodily appendage, always maintaing correct temperature and consistency, which is usually found attached to an extremely self righteous, holier-than-thou and up-her-own-arses lady'.

Ninkynork · 31/05/2009 12:48

Gosh, well here's a bit for starters:

www.enotalone.com/article/3605.html

It does seem to suggest that the action of bottle-feeding isn't ideal.

LovelyTinOfSpam · 31/05/2009 12:48

Seriously does anyone know what a bewbie is?

Not a term I've come across before.

Like a doidy maybe?

violethill · 31/05/2009 12:51

ninky - big clue there - SOMEONE IS TRYING TO SELL A BOOK! You know - make a bit of dosh???
You could find plenty of books which won't agree with that.
If you want to debate, then you need a range of reliable resources. But frankly, I don't think many people on here are up for debate - I think they just want to tell us about their bewbies ROFL

LovelyTinOfSpam · 31/05/2009 12:53

VH. Did she really mean breasts?

Bloody hell.

Well I'm certainly not prepared to listen to anyone who refers to their breasts as "bewbies".

bubbleymummy · 31/05/2009 12:55

Ninkynork you're right. The muscles used for extracting milk from a bottle are different than those used for bf so it can lead to malformation of the palate. Also right about bm changing to meet the needs of the baby. Think people are getting a bit catty here to be honest.

sunfleurs · 31/05/2009 12:55

I can't stand that argument "SOMEONE IS TRYING TO SELL A BOOK!". As though this discounts all the information to be found in there. As though the fact that someone will make some money out negates any use it might be.

OracleInaCoracle · 31/05/2009 12:57

how pants. this has turned from an interesting discussion about whether toys have helped to normalise a certain practice into another ff/bf slanging match.
