Genuine observation here, not trying to stir anything. It just seems a lot less cliquey and bum-licky. My replies are recognised and appreciated. I hope newbies feel welcomed and that there isn't some barrier that you have to cross in order to become 'popular'.

Well?

Canute, a lot of the 'jokes' were very personal and very nasty. A snide remark here and there. If you disagreed with one popular Mumsnetter, you'd get the gang come onto the thread and everyone else would bugger off. Newbies were ridiculed and told what to post and what not to post. If they had an opinion they were ignored. The same old threads were started by the same old people and their friends would join in and very often Active Convos would be taken over.

They thought they ruled Mumsnet.

I'm sad that some people I considered as friends didn't feel the same way.

But certainly Mumsnet is just as funny and original to me as it always was. Saying it's stale is just insulting. You know where you can go if you don't like it.

hi fish.

AitchTwoOh · 21/05/2009 15:03

imo there were about three people who thought they were 'essence de MN' and i never understood why it offended people so much that they thought it. you either agreed with them or didn't agree. as for the not being mourned, that was one poster alone.

i'm with 100x on this COMPLETELY. it's a bit one-note at the moment and the note is bumsex. that said, if you waste your entire life root about a bit, there are still those genuinely breathlessly funny threads. but it also seems to escalate into gleeful nasitness in a way that i don't remember before as well. it's all just a function of being a bigger site, every time it sheds a skin people will say this stuff. twas ever thus.

ClaphamOmnibus · 21/05/2009 15:04

It was fine before mouldigate, and it is fine after. It was just a bit shit during.

AitchTwoOh · 21/05/2009 15:04

lord, Rhubarb, you were on a different MN for sure.

ClaphamOmnibus · 21/05/2009 15:06

It doesn't seem one note to me Aitch.

And I must have missed all the bumsex. Twas ever thus.

Blu · 21/05/2009 15:06

Anyway, there's no such thing as 'better' worse' etc except in the mind of the beholder. MN has always had it's highs and lows. Personally I think 'AIBU' is a MN low and has led to a different vibe on MN. But clearly most people LOVE AIBU, and it gets most posts! So there's no objective truth about the state on MN, good or bad.

LOADS of things have had an effect on the site: size, mods / withdrawal of mods, intro or 'report this post', intro of member profiles, and, I think, the fact that since I was first on MN (back when you had a box for floppy discs on your desk!) Facebook and MSN have been invented. That leads to people getting to know each other off board in different ways, discussing threads and posters.

I used to have more in-depth discussions, and be in more consistent contact with certain threads. But it's me that has changed - I just use MN a lot less, have reverted to RL...and see people less, even though they are here.

And, um, aren't threads like this as bad as 'MN isn't what it used to be'??

CouldYouWouldYouWithaGoat · 21/05/2009 15:07

nah, i think it is shit

mrsruffallo · 21/05/2009 15:08

Doesn't seem one note to me either.
I don't notice that many sex threads either, but then I never have

chatta · 21/05/2009 15:09

It is duller and then an oldy posts and the lights come back on

MannyMoeAndJack · 21/05/2009 15:10

There was too much xenophobia before IIRC and too much 'can I be in your gang? Please?'. If there is a hierarchy now, then it is less noticable.

ClaphamOmnibus · 21/05/2009 15:10

chatta that is so not true.
