to think Mumset is a whole lot better post-Mouldiegate?

Genuine observation here, not trying to stir anything. It just seems a lot less cliquey and bum-licky. My replies are recognised and appreciated. I hope newbies feel welcomed and that there isn't some barrier that you have to cross in order to become 'popular'.

Well?

waving back at ggglimpopo and other familiar faces. I agree it has changed - i find myself posting on far less than i used to. There aren't many threads that catch my eye anymore, and of the ones that do,very few i then comment on.On the plus side my house is looking better for it!

I'd never heard 'intello' till ggglim used it. Now I'm worried that I've accidentally used a ponce word like 'fora'.

i blame you bitoffun for the dumbing down of mumsnet.. chat was all about agriculture and the political system of cuba....then you joined.

ClaireDeLoon · 22/05/2009 10:06

DP's post just now made me realise that when I first joined (2 years ago) I used to see posts saying 'Who are you? Are you a name changer? Do I know you?' and it came over so snotty in a 'I only talk to people I know' sort of way. I haven't seen posts like that for a while but that may or may not be as a direct consequence of the moldie thing. And this wasn't intended to be having a go at DP btw I quite understand her post just now wasn't meant like that at all

lol claire..you know mumsnet will end up just like it was before....

ggglimpopo · 22/05/2009 10:12

Intello is french slang that slipped into my post as my children use it all the time - unfortunately in negative (geek) sense, rather than in the positive;

I meant it positively, obviously!

Apologies for french prentitiousnessessess.

French ponciness! The best kind!

So do French people have the same sort of distain for 'cleverness' as Brits are said to have? I thought they thought that intellectuals were uber-cool.

daftpunk · 22/05/2009 10:16

oh desi was great...very clever and very funny...

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2009 10:18

it's not arrogance to say that the forum seems less intelligent now, it's just a fact of the forum getting bigger. there are still the same number of interesting threads as there were, no doubt, but they are often sunk under the wealth of bumsex and private chat threads. so the effect is diluted, ergo [ponce] the forum seems less intelligent.

i used to see hunker's or franny's or harpsi's (for example) name as posting last on a thread in active convos and i'd think 'i wonder what they're up to' and click on it. or threadie or onebat or the wonk etc. not a clique, just that they were good value. but now some are gone, some to moldies and others to rl i think, and it looks like threadie and onebat have changed names. so it's harder to find the funny, smart threads imo. at least when a thread title had spelling for shit you knew it would be a good place to congregate for a laugh.

it's like multi-channel telly... bbc4 is still there but you have to flick through a lot of jeremy kyle repeats and fat people on a diet before you find it. in the old days, with four or five channels, you knew where you were.

by the way re absence of nastiness now etc etc, what did happen to twinset? has she deregged?

That is spot on Aitch!

badapple · 22/05/2009 10:23

But a forum is not less intelligent if it has just as many thought-provoking threads that are harder to find in a bigger total pile.

It is just, well, bigger. I like the comparison with multi-channel TV. We no longer have the Morcambe and Wise moments, when everyone was 'tuned into' the same thread.

That was true well before mouldiegate, and probably part of the reason some left. And of course nothing at all wrong with leaving in favour of a smaller forum.

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2009 10:24

... except i could be seen as taking a pop at the dieting threads which i emphatically am not. i wasn't really thinking about mn, more about telly, when i wrote that. (although i realise that it's actually horribly accurate).

AitchTwoOh · 22/05/2009 10:25

i said 'seems', quite specifically.

and yes, it's the lack of water-cooler moments i miss most.

badapple · 22/05/2009 10:28

The reason I harp on about MN not beig dumber or less funny than it was is that that false claim was what hurt me about the mouldie thing. Nothing wrong with going to another forum - of course!!. But there was a theme that new MNers were stupider and only the smarter ones were mouldie-worthy. I'm sure not all mouldies felt that, but it did loom large.

Ponders · 22/05/2009 10:28

"by the way re absence of nastiness now etc etc, what did happen to twinset? has she deregged?"

well, quite, aitch
