to think Mumset is a whole lot better post-Mouldiegate?

Genuine observation here, not trying to stir anything. It just seems a lot less cliquey and bum-licky. My replies are recognised and appreciated. I hope newbies feel welcomed and that there isn't some barrier that you have to cross in order to become 'popular'.

Well?

Slight crash but has anyone seen Justjules/snoopdog? Did she go with the molds?
I missed the whole thing. Very strange.

middleclassintelligentsia · 22/05/2009 00:38

I am stuck really between the two places.

I was getting sad am MN for its dumbing down/bumsex stuff and , oh, I don't know how to explain.

I was invited to join moldies so I did.

And found it all a bit too cosy and nice.

So I left moldies and stopped oing on MN or Moldies for some months.

And then I got bored so came back to MN and felt justied in leaving MN.

Only to find that I don't really enjoy MN any kore- it has changed, like it or not.

The tolerance has gone, the level of debate.
I remmeber good strong philosophical debates on religion and politics an'll sorts.
Now it really seems to be "your not normal if you don't agree with me" type stuff.
No smart thinking and no to and fro and enjoying a discussion vs trying to ram one's idea down each others' throats.

Sad but true.

But the upshot is real life certainly got alot better

bundle · 22/05/2009 01:31

I remember your pregnancy very well emkana and have followed (though maybe not v obviously) your lovely little boy's progress since he was born

badapple · 22/05/2009 06:29

middleclassintelligensia it just isn't true that the level of debate has gone down in philosophy or religion or politics. For philosphy/religion, look here for example -- there are other examples too.

For politics, look at the policywonk-led threads on G20 and Mps expenses -- genuine political debate with lots of good-natured and extremely funny humour.

MN is just a lot bigger, so of course there are a lot of other sorts of thread to wade through if you want to find what you want. But if you were genuinely interested in these discussions they wouldn't be hard to find.

It actually makes me angry that you are prepared to say this. Effectively you are saying 'there are no intelligent posters like me around'. The quality of these sorts of discussions has got very much higher. And for all that the best-known moldies brought to MN, I wouldn't say that political, philosophical, or religious depth were amongst those qualities.

I'm sick of this 'not what it was'. It is an arrogant fiction.

So angry I posted twice!

And so angry, in fact, that I reregistered just to make this point: I had deregistered precisely because there were so many engaging, funny, intelligent discussions with 'smart people' as you put it that I was spending too much time here.

Chinwag · 22/05/2009 06:54

Badapple, I totally agree. It's pure arrogance. To imply nobody who uses the forum now has anything of worth to say, is narrow minded.

I liked aspects of it before, but I couldn't stand the sycophantic rubbish that went with the moldies. I'm glad they left, although I suspect most of them have come back under different names. An exclusive group has limited value.

seeker · 22/05/2009 07:26

If they had just gone away and formed their own forum it would have been fine - it's the popping back to see what's going on, the references to 'the other place', and extraordinary remarks about not understanding why it's a problem if people post on both "fora" that really pi**es me off.

dongles · 22/05/2009 07:32

Where anyone does find the time or energy to uncover all this Moldie stuff? I've been on here a few years, under lots of different names, and I've got no idea about any of it. The only thing I can think of is that there was a spate of threads where people would pile in trying to close them down with charming comments like "Fuck off with all this shit", which was maybe a Moldie thing, but who knows.

In any event, it seems a bit daft to complain that the site is boring or unintelligent but still be a member and posting on it.

daftpunk · 22/05/2009 07:55

ikwym seeker...but nothing anyone can do to stop that.

i have been helped so much on mumsnet...even though i'm a pita 99% of the time, people still take the time to explain things to me...are still kind, don't take my insults too personally ...i'm not sure that would have happened a year ago.....the whole place seems more friendly.

mn is brilliant imo....and still plenty of witty intelligent posters around.

Kimi · 22/05/2009 08:14

I missed the whole moldie thing....

I have been here 6 years and have seen it become vile at times although I do feel it has gone back to being a bit less hostile of late, don't know if that has anything to do with mouldiegate or not.

Do feel it got very them and us for a bit though

TrillianAstra · 22/05/2009 08:19

Someone a long time back said something bad about the bat.

I am new (less than a year) and I like the bat. I fricking love the bat.

I like linking to it, I like being caught out by it, and I like thinking 'ooooh, I bet that's the bat' when people have done a suspicious link.

So there.

Shoesy · 22/05/2009 08:19

IMO some things are better and some worse, there are a few attention seekers on here but in the main I heart mn

harleyd · 22/05/2009 08:21

just 99% of the time punky?

i like mn...it keeps me from killing my children out of trouble
it seems much busier now than when i joined a couple of years ago...but that could just be all the damn namechanges

chatta · 22/05/2009 08:25

There is no point harking back though as what is the point. Not everyone can be friends with everyone else and groups of friends 'clique' in real life too it is normal.Moldy wasn't the only splinter group ever formed it was just the most controversial, there are others out there

daftpunk · 22/05/2009 08:30

very true chatter...

anyway..i have a son to get to school

running out the door

Ledodgy · 22/05/2009 08:31

Sorry for the hijack. Kimi How is your sister's friend's little girl?

BitOfFun · 22/05/2009 08:33

I can't think what you mean Trillian...I am another one for retrospectively finding these things funny, but perhaps we should start our own traditions?

TrillianAstra · 22/05/2009 08:54

I also think that MN is the reason I haven't started drinking in the daytime (still unemployed, sigh).

BitOfFun · 22/05/2009 08:57

Oh, I dunno, is 8.57 too early for you Trill? < hides hipflask >

TrillianAstra · 22/05/2009 09:02

Shhhh, DP reads this you know. I have to namechange if I'm going to be boozing.

TrilllianAstra · 22/05/2009 09:03

Aha, he'll never see me now. Where's that chocolate vodka thread gone?

ggglimpopo · 22/05/2009 09:26

i started to find Mumsnet very difficult for the same reasons that I find going to my children's school difficult - my name (face!) is synonymous in some people's heads with tragedy and when I found that my posts, however anodyne, were being taken in that context, I decided it was time to step back from Mumsnet;

It has changed, or maybe I have. It is bigger, brasher and less intello; there are more sex threads (sans pirates) and the outrageous characters - red rugs or pheasant shoots anyone?- seem not to have been replaced. Bumsex just doesn't fill the vacuum and isn't outrageous or thought provoking, but still attracts dozens of replies.

I dunno.

Waves at old friends and sparring partners.

daftpunk · 22/05/2009 09:31

chatta....sorry, spelt your name wrong.

wanted to make you sound a bit posher. (being a moldie and everything) ...chatta sounds too common....wanna, gonna, chatta.

badapple · 22/05/2009 09:35

It isn't less intello ggglim. It's just that there is a lot more other stuff too. I can see the loss involved in the site becoming larger. But I wish people wouldn't keep on saying that the stimulating threads aren't there. It is just not true.
