to want Formula Feeding Mums to QUIT calling my BF dd tiny

AntiAnti · 07/05/2009 17:25

!

Nearly everytime we meet someone with a dc the same age as dd, they comment on how small she is compared to their large child.

She is bang on the 50 centile mark for both height and weight on the breastfed growth charts issued by the World Health Organization (but not on the formula fed charts currently used by the NHS).

The WHO charts plot the growth of normal human growth patterns, not the sped up growth of babies fed on bovine hormone infused milk.

AIBU to want people to be aware that normal-weight breastfed babies are not small for their age?

This is not a rant against FF, just one on those who use this as a benchmark for judging other children.

Ignorance sucks.

OP posts:
spongebrainmaternitypants · 07/05/2009 17:47

But it was a totally unnecessary thing to say wasn't it - just your way of pointing out how inferior they are?

You are equally ignorant IMO.

spongebrainmaternitypants · 07/05/2009 17:48

sorry x-posted with loads of people, that was aimed at the OP

screamingabdab · 07/05/2009 17:49

I would have had more sympathy but for the "bovine hormone-infused" bit.

However, I was not aware that there are different growth charts, so that's educated me.

Biscuits4Cheese · 07/05/2009 17:49

I really dont get it, what is wrong with someone saying your baby is tiny? They're babies, they generally are to some extent or another.
Cant imagine anyone saying this in any way other than a positive "oh, how tiny/ sweet/ lovely..." type way.
Now if they were saying "gosh, isn't she emaciated..." I'd understand your anger. (and actually believe you had something to be angry about in the first place rather than just looking to stir some crap)

Marthasmama · 07/05/2009 17:50

In my red book I have the breastfed from birth charts and my dd is bang on the 50th. And everyone comments that she is enormous. She too is still bf at 7 months and cannot work out what to do with a bottle when I've tried to give her EBM. I would love for people to comment on her being tiny and dainty, rather than huge and boyish. Maybe the OP is confusing formula milk with George's Marvellous Medicine. That promotes extremely fast growth.

FairLadyRantALot · 07/05/2009 17:50

tbh, it is all bollox anyway, surely....my ys was the longest breastfed (till 13 month) and he is just like his oldest brother (who was breastfed for about 3-4 month) and basically always was a porker, and is still quite chubby now....my ms is completely different build was bf'ed for 10 month....and he is just petite...nothing to do wiht teh way any of them were fed, as far as I can see...
why bring feeding issues into this...why not just say, well, my little one is just petite build and is developing just lovely....

foxytocin · 07/05/2009 17:51

one more thing. until this poster posts under her usual name, lets not assume she really got told these things or even has a baby never mind how she actually is feeding it.

it is a bored shit stirrer hairy arsed trucker for all we know.

screamingabdab · 07/05/2009 17:51

BTW, are you saying that all the people who have said this to you are formula feeding? Or are you just assuming this because you are a bit sensitive about it?

Sbeanmum · 07/05/2009 17:51

AntiAnti - strikes me as a bit of a rant, TBH. These charts are based on averages - and there is nothing average about any given individual child. I sympathise that you are fed up hearing this, but in the grand scheme of things, does it really matter?

As many others posters have pointed out, if you have a healthy child, then you have nothing to worry about, and without doubt you will run into folk throughout life who will have a point of view about everything to do with your child or your child-rearing.

My advice would be to smile sweetly and try to restrain yourself from making ill-informed comments about bovine hormone infused milk. (You would do well to read up on the regulations concerning bovine hormones, by the way)

For what it's worth, I don't believe the new charts will stop any of these discussions, they just move the goalposts a little.

Chill out - you're going to need to!

FrankMustard · 07/05/2009 17:51

AntiAnti - FYI I BF all 4 of my sons and they were all between 90-97th centile.
Not sure you actually have any sort of point..???

HuwEdwards · 07/05/2009 17:52

oh god as long as you are happy with her....why on earth do you care????

screamingabdab · 07/05/2009 17:53

Good post Sbeanmum

pinkstarfish · 07/05/2009 17:55

YANBU

DuffyFluckling · 07/05/2009 17:55

Eh?

Ff babies aren't bigger than bf babies are they? I have never heard this trend.

southeastastra · 07/05/2009 17:55

moondog is that you?

Morloth · 07/05/2009 17:56

DS was a freakin' HUGE baby, was one of those multiple elbow types, all lovely rolls of squeezy fat and he was fully breastfed.

Formula is fine, have a look around you and see if you can spot the adults who were formula fed/breastfed!

JollyPirate · 07/05/2009 17:56

Am sure moondog would not hide behind any false persona - if she thought it she would say it loud and proud - that's what I like about her.

PM73 · 07/05/2009 17:58

Foxytocin - you just made me spit tea all over my keyboard

hairy arsed trucker love it!!

FairLadyRantALot · 07/05/2009 17:58

Duffy, I think it is one of tose myths...although, I suppose one theory behind this might be, that it would be easeir to "overfeed" a Baby when giving bottles, as they might drink quicker (easier to get milk or something) and that therefore they might eat larger volumes...if that is true, I do not know....
obviously OP wanted to stir a bit, what with calling Formula "Bovine whatsis"...

Sbeanmum · 07/05/2009 17:59

Thanks, screamingabdab - I x-posted with your post about the hormones

katiestar · 07/05/2009 18:06

YANBU.I had small babies who were breastfed and seemed to get even smaller in terms of centiles.
My youngest is now 4 and apparently on the first centile for weight and the 25th for height but she certainly seems to be doing well on it !

Oh come on!

I usually wistfully say to people 'oh, aren't they tiny' as I gaze at my (fully bf 9mth) gigantic lump of a boy. Dd was mostly ff and she was average. But people have always commented - even now (mostly jaffa cake and apple juice fed) I get some people saying 'oh, isn't she tiny' and some people saying 'oh, isn't she tall'. It's just small talk!

TheCrackFox · 07/05/2009 18:14

FFS, it is just small talk. Some babies are big, some average and some tiny.

I had 2 massive boys - 1 FF and 1 BF. When people commented on that I had no idea how they fed their babies. Nor did I care.

YABU and very unpleasant with it.
