Moondog - that's the reporter that said those things - just pointing out what I should imagine were some pretty obvious things to the naked eye

The same article says that

"Louise is not inclined to blame the government for her difficulties. She is grateful for the money she gets every week and doesn't think her life would be much enhanced by increased payments."

oh and as for the numbers of aslyum seekers - yes they sound high - but we're ranked 9th in Europe for the number of aslyum seekers we take in, which is 2% of the worlds aslyum seekers.

70% of the worlds aslyum seekers go to 3rd world countries, and a 1/3 of those are in the worlds 49th poorest countries.

Yes neither of the people both myself and my friend spoke to regarding this matter were professional. But they told us the truth.

FAQinglovely · 21/03/2009 21:59

no they told you BULLSHIT.

Yarls wood:

Facilities
There is an on-site dedicated healthcare centre with a small in-patient facility.
The healthcare team accessed by residents is made up of
GPs,
General nurses,
Mental health nurses,
Health visitors,
Midwives,
Dentists,
Counsellors and allied Health care professionals and Consultants who attend the centre where there is an identified need.

Education is provided for school-age children on weekdays in two separate classes; one for children aged between five and 11 and one for children aged 11 to 16. There is a nursery for children under five.

The centre also has a well stocked library which is managed by a full time chartered librarian. Activities for adult detainees include team sports such as badminton and volleyball in the sports hall; cardio-vascular fitness routines in a well-equipped gym and exercise to music. Supervised arts and crafts sessions are held each weekday morning and afternoon. The chance to develop ICT skills in dedicated computer rooms is also available.

Other facilities include hair salons; youth club and cinemas. Opportunities are available for paid work

western malnutrition will be more likely to cause obesity, although depends I suppose one western malnutrition is possibly that one where the person doesn't really eat much because they prefer smoking and drinking....

FAQinglovely · 21/03/2009 22:03

Yarls Wood is also the place where a 4 month old baby was denied access to milk for 18hrs not that long ago.

I cannot believe that on the basis of a single photograph posters are now making a decision about whether or not the woman is starving or malnourished. Ridiculous.

THe point of the whole article was that by UK's standards/definition she and her family are living in poverty. That does not have to mean that they are starving or malnourished, just that their income is below a percentage of the national average (or however the definition is calculated).

By UK definition the family live in poverty. We are indeed fortunate that there is a safety net of state healthcare and education. But that doesn't mean that it is not relevant/appropriate to be bloody sad that children are still being raised on the breadline.

FAQinglovely · 21/03/2009 22:04

yes and no doubth the "paid work" - is in the facilities provided inside the detention centre - as they're not allowed out, so they then have money to spend at the "cinema" or whatever.

FairLady no my post wasnt directed at you . It was a general little ramble really.

chelle did it ever occour to you that you were being lied to? Housing officers get ranted at every by people 'why havnt I got a new flat yet?' etc etc. They would love to say 'why the hell should you get a new flat anyway' but are not allowed so they say 'cos all the illegal immigrants/bogus asylum seekers/ paeadophile get then' and that gives everyone something else to moan about.

So the government are building houses for illegal immigrants that havnt even sneaked in yet? I expect they have swimming pools too.

SalLikesCoffee · 21/03/2009 22:05

I have been following these threads without posting until now. However, I need to change this, as I have to get this out of my system:

Chellesgirl, you are talking the biggest load of rubbish I've recently heard.

Honestly, surely no-one can be this stupid?! Do yourself a favour and read up on immigration laws, benefits etc. I don't believe for one second that all you've said on here has actually been said, sorry.

Chellesgirl · 21/03/2009 22:05

But what is to be done about it pooka. Seriosly, though whos gonna help these people living in poverty other than themselves?

FairLadyRantALot · 21/03/2009 22:07

actually I was just saying that because she might look padded doesn't mean she isn't malnutritioned....i.e. it is very possible, by the sounds of her, that the fruit and veg will all or mostly go to her children....

however pooka you are right....it's about poverty, and this lady is living in poverty...

Chellesgirl · 21/03/2009 22:07

chegirl read my post again. I think you got it a bit twisted.

'So the government are building houses for illegal immigrants that havnt even sneaked in yet? I expect they have swimming pools too. '

No. a private housing association was building houses for immigrants that wernt even in the country yet.
not what you said.

FAQinglovely · 21/03/2009 22:07

you have to help people to help themselves.

Even charities such as Oxfam working in the most deprived areas of the world recognise that they need to make sure that the people they are helping are given the tools and knowledge to help themselves without jumping on them because they're not doing things the "right" way.

OP posts:
chegirl · 21/03/2009 22:09

Why shouldnt a detention centre have medical facilities and a school?

So what should a dentention centre be like then?

FAQinglovely · 21/03/2009 22:09

"No. a private housing association was building houses for immigrants that wernt even in the country yet."

again highly unlikely, the government (in most places - I think could be slightly different in Scotland) funds the housing of aslyum seekers - who are the ones that will get housing - they are usually placed in privately rented houses - not HA houses.

And any other immigrant, economic or illegal won't get help with their housing at all.

SalLikesCoffee Try living where I do, and also if you would like how about go visit these people and ask them yourselves. I am no liar. And most of my info I have put to this thread actuall comes from the home office website

FAQinglovely · 21/03/2009 22:10

che - perhaps she thinks it should look like this one

OP posts:
pooka · 21/03/2009 22:11

The woman in the article is trying to help herself though, isn't she? She's taking classes in improving her literacy and trying to learn IT skills. She hopes one day to perhaps be able to put those skills to use. IN the meantime though, until that happens, she is living a precarious existence where unforeseen expenses could have dire consequences on her children who are (if statistics are correct) likely to begin to fall behind their richer peers by the age of I think 5 regardless of how intelligent they are simply because they are poor.

What's to be done? Haven't a clue but remain to be convinced that the conservative party have the answer when it comes to ending child poverty in the UK

I do think she should get more money though. Seriously. Ideally from the pursuit of her ex-p (if he is still employed as he was when they were together) without that being offset against her benefits. Maybe. I dunno. But I think that immigration is a red herring and has naff all to do with the situation she is in.

chegirl · 21/03/2009 22:12

Sorry HUGE mistake there.

So a HA is building houses for illegal immigrants who havnt even come here yet? I expect they have swimming pools too?

Why the hell would a business build houses that will remain empty? If the immigrants are not here yet who will pay the rent? How does the HA know that these immigrants will be coming here? If they are illegal how does anyone know they are coming here? How do they plan for these unknown people?

Chellesgirl · 21/03/2009 22:12

FAQ
'they are usually placed in privately rented houses - not HA houses.'

It is private rental accom. The private housing association works closely with my council.

Chellesgirl · 21/03/2009 22:13

ilegal didnt even come into it Che

Chellesgirl · 21/03/2009 22:14

FAQ that one too easy to escape from

chegirl · 21/03/2009 22:14

chelle where do you live? Obviously I am not asking for and adress but I live in an area that is poor and diverse. I lived on council estates for years.

How do you know if someone is an illegal immigrant anyway?
