Moondog - that's the reporter that said those things - just pointing out what I should imagine were some pretty obvious things to the naked eye

The same article says that

"Louise is not inclined to blame the government for her difficulties. She is grateful for the money she gets every week and doesn't think her life would be much enhanced by increased payments."

It is obviously only meant to be homeless people who sell it.

But, there are always tales of people who see vendors going into their 'homes' after.

A lot of these people will be in sheltered accommodation, or possibly staying with a friend, maybe they have recently been put into the home. There is no rule that says vendors have to sleep on the streets.

FAQinglovely · 25/03/2009 00:07

I guess I'd be down the council offices and waiting to be put in the "B&B" (actually a very dodgy hotel - full of drugs and sh*t)

no DSM - it's not "only" homeless - the bigissue website says

"The Big Issue exists to offer homeless and vulnerably housed people the opportunity to earn a legitimate income by selling a magazine to the general public"

Chellesgirl · 25/03/2009 00:11

Chellesgirl · 25/03/2009 00:14

Anyways Im gonna go and put DD to bed- Dont ask. She loves to stay up until her daddy gets home and then sleeps till 10 in the morning - Bliss.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/03/2009 00:16

Slightly off topic but last week I was in manchester a fair bit and noticed a huge number of apparently homeless young teenage girls. Why would that be? Some of them broke my heart just looking at their faces, they were not obviously on drugs or anything, just looked lost and I helped a couple.

Chellesgirl · 25/03/2009 00:19

Were they Foreign exchange students who had been left in Manchester by thier evil coach driver?

DSM · 25/03/2009 00:21

That is a bit random.

Were they British? I know about a group of girls who were brought over from Slovenia (or Slovakia) for sex trafficking, awful story. Think it was in Manchester. The poor girls managed to get away somehow (sorry, can't remember the story exactly) and ended up living on the streets as they had no idea what to do, where to go and most likely couldn't speak English well enough to seek help alone.

The story was about them getting deported and not wanting to be. I think they managed to get to stay in Britain in the end. I recall a few of them were under 18 as well.

Anyway, I just remember thinking how awful it would be to be taken to another country and left, on the streets, alone.

Chellesgirl · 25/03/2009 00:24

Oh that is horrid. Im glad you were able to help some of them DWP.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/03/2009 00:26

I see a lot like that in london but they are 'street hardened' iyswim. These girls looked clean, almost like runaways. I speculated with my friend and he said a lot of northern runaways head for Manchester.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/03/2009 00:29

I didn't help much, just thrust money at them. And took one girl into Primark and bought her a thick coat. She was grateful but oddly detached. She wouldn't say a word about herself.

Thanks Stevie My aunty was in a childrens home somwhere around Inverkiething (I think I spelt that right) she ran away and ended up on the streets, as a 16 year old.

I get your point about them not wanting to enter the 'system'. She was too afraid to go to anyone ( as she had been raped by her step father) and so she stayed on the streets. She eventually met my uncle (in blackpool)(thats how far she wondered) when she was 17, hes around 20 years older than her.

I think he life is better than what she used to have, although shell never forget her past. But I do think the authorities should of handled it better in Scotland, such as educating her in the childrens home as she was there for 4 years from 12yrs old.
they also could of offered her councelling as most children who end up in a home, need someone to talk to.

She is on IS now, she has 2 children, takes drugs and drinks everyday.

She cant be arsed to go to work and nor can my uncle as its easier for them to stay at home having everything paid for them.

She has had a rough ride and so has my uncle being imrisoned for something he did not do. I just wish someone could have helped them before hand, as they wouldnt be like they are now.

To be honest I dont like her, I used to get on with her when I was younger, but thats because she acted like a 12yrd old. She claims she had depression - although smokes a heck of a lot of weed, although the DWP obviosly dont know that. She tells me that she lies to get her IS. She steals from shops all the time, and takes money from my Nan. Dont take her children to the docs when they need to be seen and also feeds them crap.

I just wish someone would try and make her see sense, and my uncle, that they dont have to living the life they do now, that life can be better for all of them.

But I dont think leapords can change thier spots.

Chellesgirl · 25/03/2009 15:16

Ive tried talking to her, form a family point of view, and also from a professional point of view, and she ignores everything I say, because she thinks that only her ways of doing things is right. i think it comes down to not trusting people again.

Tigerbear · 25/03/2009 17:44

Hi all, does anyone know where the ORIGINAL thread went to this story? I can't find it anywhere, and want to show a friend. The one where you can click on the original article....

DSM · 25/03/2009 17:52

I think it was deleted?

Tigerbear · 25/03/2009 17:57

Oh no, why? That's so annoying! Does MN take things down if the thread gets too big?

DSM · 25/03/2009 18:17

No, I think it was deleted because of some of the posts.

I believe people complained and the thread was removed.

FAQinglovely · 25/03/2009 18:20

Tigerbear · 25/03/2009 22:54

Hi FAQinglovely, thanks for that.
I'd been telling a friend about this, and was disappointed I couldn't find it again. I have been trying to lure her onto MN with this discussion!
