I know several on here hate it, but are we too old to 'get' it (and therefore be unreasonable ourselves), or am I right to just

HATE HATE HATE

IT????

cos at the mo, if I see a post with text speak I ignore it (life is too short to try and decifer(sp?) it IMVHO), and also those with pure SHOUTING in too.

I also, shamefully maybe but there you go, actually think less of people who cennot seem to 'speak' properly in their posts. It is not as those we are limited on how many letter we have to use. we can waffle for pages if we like (altho better not to obviously), so I think text speakers lazy and not worth bothering with.

obviously this is only MY opinion, and I am sure peoples opinions of me are as 'blunt' too at times. but sorry.....

if you resort to text speak, then I will ignore you.

Totally with you! It's lazy and confusing!

mayorquimby · 20/03/2009 12:21

"cos at the mo"

"I also, shamefully maybe but there you go, actually think less of people who cennot seem to 'speak' properly in their posts. "

[shit stirring emoticon]

psychomum5 · 20/03/2009 12:21

yes, confusing...that was the word I had wanted to use.

I am very confused a lot of the time, hence maybe my inabilty to read it.

Yes, YANBU! God after last night!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 20/03/2009 12:24

hate it

TrillianAstra · 20/03/2009 12:24

I like to use 'cos', but sometimes I censor myself cos I am afraid of the pedants.

Hate text speak, even in text messages, unless you really need to keep it under the character allowance. I prefer to use ful sentences even if it means running on into two messages.

Anyway, it's clearly not an age thing. Either that or I am also too old.

Stretch · 20/03/2009 12:25

Also hate things like

"fankoo" or "tanx"

psychomum5 · 20/03/2009 12:25

I never use text speak either in my texts.

I do squish my texts at times to keep to one page, but not often. depends on credit really

Some shortenings are really old. I've noticed 'thru' on black and white movie credits before.

Which is only relevant in that it's not a new thing to try and shorten everything...

FAQinglovely · 20/03/2009 12:28

I can read (most) text speak - but it takes me 3 times longer than a post written out properly - even one with spelling mistakes.

flowerybeanbag · 20/03/2009 12:30

YANBU, is annoying, and as FAQ says, it makes reading posts take 3 times as long.

nannyogg · 20/03/2009 12:34

I don't think I'm too old to get it - it's just so damn difficult to read, and I agree with you if it's a post absolutely filled with txt spk, and no paragraph breaks, and really bad spelling.

However,

I've been known to use 'cos' and ''til' and even 'spose' before now. And I'm always LOL-ing and FFS-ing too - but is that txt spk?

psychomum5 · 20/03/2009 12:35

I confess to shortening thru and tho, but the missing out of vowels, the use of one letter instead of a word, and interspersing (sp?) numbers (ie L8 for 'late'), really truly makes me want to rip my eyes out and bang my head on a wall, in hopes that that might enable me to understand better!!!

OP posts:
DSM · 20/03/2009 12:35

I can read it, obviously, but it is annoying, and totally removes the pleasure derived from
normal reading.

I hate it, I never, ever use it in texts, not even to the extend of 'u' instead of 'you', I use full, complete sentences with correct punctuation.

Its not an age thing, I am 26.

DSM · 20/03/2009 12:36

'til is an abbreviation though, and acceptable. Its not 'text speak'.

FAQinglovely · 20/03/2009 12:38

lol - is an acronym (I think??? - pedants!! help!!). it's not a word cut short with vowels missed out, or with random numbers in the middle -

Trikken · 20/03/2009 12:38

I like to write properly wherever possible, though aabriviations I dont mind, it's bad spelling that really bothers me, like people who constantly use "their", and "they're" without knowing the difference, and putting "to" when it should be "too", and "ove" instead of "of".

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 20/03/2009 12:41

It's not an age thing - my MIL who is well into her 60's seems to be getting remarkably adept at using txt spk!

I hate it - I think it's like marmite, you either like it or you don't. There's not a comfy fence in the middle!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 20/03/2009 12:42

sorry trikken but, "aabriviations I dont mind, it's bad spelling that really bothers me"
