I know several on here hate it, but are we too old to 'get' it (and therefore be unreasonable ourselves), or am I right to just

HATE HATE HATE

IT????

cos at the mo, if I see a post with text speak I ignore it (life is too short to try and decifer(sp?) it IMVHO), and also those with pure SHOUTING in too.

I also, shamefully maybe but there you go, actually think less of people who cennot seem to 'speak' properly in their posts. It is not as those we are limited on how many letter we have to use. we can waffle for pages if we like (altho better not to obviously), so I think text speakers lazy and not worth bothering with.

obviously this is only MY opinion, and I am sure peoples opinions of me are as 'blunt' too at times. but sorry.....

if you resort to text speak, then I will ignore you.

see, I actually am not a lover of ants, so wouold not keep them as pets and am more likely to squirt them with bleach if they get into my house.....

OP posts:
tattifer · 20/03/2009 16:56

probably argue the toss as to whether it was an appropriate use of over the counter household chemicals, not to mention discussing the damage to the environment...

psychomum5 · 20/03/2009 16:58

that is of course if their ability to argue has not been burnt off by over use of said bleach by a psycho......

oh, and all pedents out there, I do love you all really, especially flame who often sits behind me when I am typing, twitching furiously at my mistakes in spelling and grammer........

OP posts:
tattifer · 20/03/2009 17:01

What in the name of all that is chocolatey is a pedent?!

Is flame breaking into paroxysms of twitching now?

psychomum5 · 20/03/2009 17:07

she is not here, so that would be a NO!

hence why I am being so crappy

along with the inabilty to retain information about spelling.....

OP posts:
tattifer · 20/03/2009 17:16

fare enuff

I graduated with a first for pedantry - just can't help myself. At least nowadays I've got it slightly under control and try not to correct people who are within striking distance

It's just ... wrong. The only adult person I know who texts in txtspk was taught by his teenage children so doesn't know any better

Whilst pregnant I dismissed other parenting forums (fora darlings) because of the prevelance of txtspk, it is loathesome. I hadn't thought about the screenreader aspect or indeed the second language readers but I completely understand. I know from memory that conversation in another language is much more difficult over the phone / in a noisy place because we fill in so much via visual clues. Not relevant to online content but clearly spelling a word properly is a huge advantage over some daft abbreviation. Now trying to imagine reading Spanish txtspk and at the difficulty!

tattifer · 20/03/2009 17:41

Nooo psychomum, was thinking they would hit me for such an irritatingly pedantic tw*t!!

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 20/03/2009 17:53

Tribpot

fora .

Reminds me of my parents (my mother when she was young and pre-text speak obviously). According to them, they began 'stepping out' after my dad asked my mum for "half a brace of donii" and she brought him.........one doughnut.

stealthsquiggle · 20/03/2009 17:55

Psycho what did you react to this time?

I am sure I issued strict instructions to the psycho tribe to look after you. Letting you nearly die does not fall within that description, in case they were not clear on that...

psychomum5 · 20/03/2009 18:01

stealth, exciting thread is here

I am just glad that this did not happen on monday, when I was in a big shite with them all and waving notes at them all instead of speaking (shouting in their world) to them.

can you imagine what they would have done......they would have waved a note telling me not to die, while watching me die silently as at least I was not shouting at them!!!

YANBU! Worst culprits for it I know are fellow students

TrillianAstra · 21/03/2009 01:26

I know an adult who uses txtspk! It is my MIL! SHe has invented her own, whihc pretty much consists of leaving out all vowels and also any other letters she deems unnnecessary

psychomum5 · 21/03/2009 07:25

at least your MIL can text tho.

mine won;t. she does have a mobile tho, and both her sons think it very funy to send her texts that she has no knowledge of retreiving, and then she panics!!

she doesn;t even know how to save numbers to her mogile either.........she literally types in each number as and when she wants to use them.

SIL and I are pondering buying her a new mobile like one of ours so we can prep it for her before hand with all the numbers, and giving her an intesive course on mobiles. the one she has right now just flashes ducks walking across the screen and waving 'bye bye' everytime we try and touch it. she sure has done SOMETHING odd to it in her fear

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 21/03/2009 10:00

She can text, but it makes no sense! Her sentence structure goes all doolally and the wors are missing half their letters so you can't even guess what the words are.

I tend to assume that what she means is 'get my son to call me'

psychomum5 · 23/03/2009 19:29

raising this tonight because, quite seriously, I am finding some posts hell with the text speak, and I cannot raise it on the exact thread as it would not be proper, seeing as there is enough flaming going on anyway

OP posts:
FAQinglovely · 23/03/2009 19:31

has WannaBe posted on this thread?

if not - am I alone in thinking that perhaps she may find posts with text speak inaccessible due to her use of a screen reader?

psychomum5 · 23/03/2009 19:34

FAQ, someone further down said that wannabe was a reason to not do text=speak on mumsnet.

and there are others here too I think that use screen readers.

it is for them that it should be banned (in my opinion), as well as for those of us who cannot be arsed to read the posts with text-speak

OP posts:
FAQinglovely · 23/03/2009 19:35

ahh - hadn't posted since the first page or something and couldn't be arsed to go back and read it.

I'm sure others use them (screen readers) too - was just WannaBe that I knew for certain

morningpaper · 23/03/2009 19:35

YANBU

Although it does make me turn off MN, which is good sometimes

FAQinglovely · 23/03/2009 19:37

oh - just gone back through the thread - it was me that mentioned WannaBe and screenreaders

psychomum5 · 23/03/2009 19:39

lol @ FAQ.....

MP, I feel the same too. In fact, DH must never know that, as he might then join and text-speak all the time to ensure I get off MN occasionally

OP posts:
morningpaper · 23/03/2009 19:40

I would like to say though that sometimes JUSTINE OF MUMSNET sends me emails with a bit of txt speak thrown in

It makes me fret

dont' tell her I said
