I don't usually use Asda as Tesco/Lidl are easier logistically but I gave it a go this week. I've had some yucky stuff from there before but so far this week I've had to chuck away some prepared casserole veg withn a BBD of tomorrow - when I opened it, it was a slimy mess at the bottom of the bag, some wafer thin ham which was more shiny gristle than ham, houmous which tasted like wallpaper paste (DDs verdict) and loo roll that you could spit through!

I wouldn't mind if I'd spent loads less but it worked out as expensive as anywere else.

I have only used it once, like you, so it's probably not fair - but I agree - also the bottled water for packed lunches tasted like it had soap in it.

Idrankthechristmasspirits · 18/02/2009 13:10

YANBU. I often think this about ASDA. But then again, i have stopped buying fruit and veg from Tesco as that was so shite.
Local markets are a billion times better if you can get there in my humble opinion.

Or think about getting a veggie box? I get one fortnightly for £13.95 and it is a huge amount of veg, all lovely fresh produce locally grown.

VinegarTits · 18/02/2009 13:12

YANBU Asda is total shite, i stopped shopping there years ago, but went back recently hoping maybe they had improved and they are still as shite, bland food, shite fresh veg and fruit, shite freash meat, shelfs are never stocked properly, big bag of shite

Did i mention i think they are shite?

schneebly · 18/02/2009 13:15

I tend to shop around - big hassle for some people but it suits me as I shop 2 or three times a week. It means I can get the best value stuff from a range of places. I don't think all Asda stuff is crap but some of it is and the same goes for Tesco, Aldi etc.

SmallShips · 18/02/2009 13:15

I've never liked Asda, their fresh food is awful! Dh used to insist we shop there though.

Now we've moved we have no Asda.

OrmIrian · 18/02/2009 13:18

Not a problem with it TBH. But I avoid the cheap stuff usually.

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 18/02/2009 13:19

Agree that Asda own brand is rubbish and false economy but Tesco fruit and veg is a lot worse than Asda. I am shocked at the amount of people that shop at Tesco, I always think do you actually eat the crap they call fruit and veg?

slushymummy · 18/02/2009 13:24

Asda have a guarantee on all their food and stuff. If you don't like it etc, they will refund AND replace. Get on the phone to them and let them know ! (I've actually had ham delivered to me by asda that was 4 days out of date !!! they were most apologetic !)

OrmIrian · 18/02/2009 13:26

agree slushy. Customer service good. And staff unfailingly helpful and pleasant.

laweaselmys · 18/02/2009 13:27

The quality of the fruit and veg you get varies massively around teh country.

In my area the most likely place to sell you spoiled disgusting fruit and veg is waitrose, and tesco's is the best (and almost all local produce) It's very odd!

Nightcrawly · 18/02/2009 13:28

I don't like Asda food either, but the absolute worst has to be Iceland stuff!

YANBU I hate the fruit and veg from Asda. Its never fresh. I find that Morrisons has the best fruit and veg around here.

steviesgirl · 18/02/2009 13:50

I thought it about ASDA too. YANBU. I find the quality of most of their own brand stuff awful in comparison to any other supermarket, they must be the worst for quality. Morrisons food is much better, can't fault it, I highly rate LIDL too for quality and genuine value.

The only thing I like ASDA for is their clothing range.

gagamama · 18/02/2009 15:15

I don't mind ASDA too much to be honest, but I find that Sainbury's 'fresh' fruit and veg is always limp and brown, the shelves understocked and their own-brand products substandard (and very overpriced). All the little Sainsbury's Local shops I've been in are dreadful, too. Poorly stocked and absolutely filthy.

MrsMattie · 18/02/2009 15:17

I don't like Asda at all (except for their clothes). Nasty, cheap quality stuff.

Sorrento · 18/02/2009 15:17

I agree I looked at supermarket comparison site thingy and would have saved £3 by going to asda, I consider it £3 well spent to not have to walk around it and sort the good from the bad and the ugly.

Sidge · 18/02/2009 15:19

I think Asda has really gone downhill over the last year.

In ours, the fruit and veg is dire, the meat and fish is nasty and unless you want to buy junk food the choice is limited.

Their clothes are OK though.

kiddiz · 18/02/2009 15:32

I have no idea how they can make the "we're cheaper" claims they make on the tv ads. I don't know what they compare but it's certainly not the general groceries that most people buy as I have found them, with out exception, more expensive than both my local Tesco and Morrisons. To be fair the fruit and veg at my local Asda is ok as it is at Tesco and Morrisons so long as you pick and choose a bit. I've had more bad stuff from my local greengrocer.

tinseltot · 18/02/2009 15:50

I generally find asda to be ok, but am veggie so don't buy meat or fish so maybe this helps? I find tesco awful for fruit and veg so have stopped going there (it always perishes a few days after purchase). Sainsburys quality is fine but prices are more expensive.

One thing asda is good for is cheap own brands -they have more own brand cleaning and domestic products than tesco and sainsburys - so keep the cost of shop down by choosing these over branded products. Have even got some asda own dust sheets ready for my homebirth, much cheaper than b &q!

But i will say that asda own baked beans are horrid. Sainsburys do the best own brand beans!

mustrunmore · 18/02/2009 15:54

I hate Asda food, almost all of it. But I do like to go and look round the 'stuff'; clothes and toys and things. Cany go round with £3 for a pair of school trousers given that ds1 will just wreck them anyway

Bucharest · 18/02/2009 15:58

I heart some Asda stuff.
I loathe others.
Ditto every supermarket.
If you buy sausages that cost 16p a pack, what do you expect?
Their children's mucking-round clothes are fab! (ditto children's underwear)

I think Tesco are worse. Really cheap and nasty.

Mercy · 18/02/2009 16:07

I think I've only shopped there once and can't remember what the food was like tbh.

But I like some of the clothes and the homewares section (that's the only Asda shop near me)

notsoteenagemum · 18/02/2009 16:11

YANBU I hate Asda there's no choice except for their own brand and the quality is poor.
YABU with the wafer thin ham though all wafer thin ham is crap.

OrmIrian · 18/02/2009 16:27

Eh? Asda sell all the brands. Are you thinking of Aldi?
