To think that a lot of Asda stuff is crap quality ?

I don't usually use Asda as Tesco/Lidl are easier logistically but I gave it a go this week. I've had some yucky stuff from there before but so far this week I've had to chuck away some prepared casserole veg withn a BBD of tomorrow - when I opened it, it was a slimy mess at the bottom of the bag, some wafer thin ham which was more shiny gristle than ham, houmous which tasted like wallpaper paste (DDs verdict) and loo roll that you could spit through!

I wouldn't mind if I'd spent loads less but it worked out as expensive as anywere else.

I love Asda kids clothes....such good value. I avoid their meat at all costs...I'm always disappointed. Their fruit and veg is variable. They have a high turn over so sometimes you can get really fresh food, but even when it is fresh it still tastes awful. I used Riverford for veg for years but stopped last year when the farm supplier changed as I seemed to be getting veg that was already limp/soggy every week. I love farm shops but there isn't one around for miles.

My mum and dad like Asda's meat (and make a special trip there for a joint of beef for Sunday) although they shop at their local Morrisons for everything else!! They rave about Morrisons bread and fruit and veg

tattycoram · 18/02/2009 16:46

I went through an Asda phase a few months ago but it slowly dawned on me that lots of ths stuff was not that nice (tho quite a lot of it fine). Anyway, in the end I went back to Tesco.

musicposy · 18/02/2009 16:48

I've recently taken to shopping in Waitrose. It makes me sound really posh, but I find i spend less there than anywhere else. I get laughed at when I say this, but firstly, I am more careful only to buy what food I need, and secondly I don't come home with a duvet, some leggings for dd, a toaster, a ds game, new shoes and a my little pony -because they don't do that stuff. I get my veg from able and cole.

It's saved me an absolute fortune.

DanJARMouse · 18/02/2009 16:54

Used to have Asda deliveries but soon stopped - they were awful.

We usually do a 6am dash to tesco - produce is always very fresh and havent had a problem. Avoid Tesco for clothes/shoes etc though.

Asda are great for kids clothes, must agree with that one. £1.75 for a pair of jeans for the kids to play in the garden in. Bargain.

We only have a morrisons in this town, and although it is good, i prefer tesco for household items such as nappies/wipes/cleaning products/toilet roll etc etc etc

StealthPolarBear · 18/02/2009 16:55

I actually find asda fruit and vegetables to be better than most other supermarkets.
Don't like most of their other stuff though, meat etc (although I don't eat it it never looks nice)

FlyMeToDunoon · 18/02/2009 16:57

Had an Asda delivery last time but am going back to sainsbury's.
Bleugh! mostly

Bellebelle · 18/02/2009 17:04

Asda is awful! DH said I was being a snob for not wanting to shop there but he soon changed his mind when we did a monthly shop there rather than our usual at Sainsbury's. Our shopping bill was only about £15 less and the quality of the fresh stuff was mostly rubbish.

Have heard that Lidl is really good for some stuff like fresh fruit and veg but shops are nightmare to shop in so will leave that one until no kids in tow!

notsoteenagemum · 18/02/2009 17:19

No not thinking of Aldi, Asda don't have a as much brand choice as other supermarkets.

Karamazov · 18/02/2009 17:21

Agreed, I also hate their clothes too - they just shrink or look awful after about 2/3 washes, so I don't bother. I avoid it at all costs, despite having a huge hypermarket type shop a mere 10 min drive from my house. I prefer Sainsburys.

WinkyWinkola · 18/02/2009 17:24

Sainsbury's are quite dreadful, I find.

I'd much rather shop in Asda or Waitrose. Our Asda is brilliant. And some of the George clothes are lovely. Lots aren't of course.

ADealingMummy · 18/02/2009 18:24

YANBU
Our nearest supermaket within walking distance is Asda, and as I like to take DD for a walk, we do seem to be in there daily.... so it's great for things like Heinz beans, wine, dvd's etc but I would never buy things like ham, chicken, etc. as it really is such poor quality.

Fleurlechaunte · 18/02/2009 18:28

I agree op. The meat and veg and fresh stuff etc is not great. I tend to go their for cleaning stuff, wet wipes and nappies etc. They usually have good deals on these. Their veg seems to go off quicker than other supermarkets and just doesn't look as good. I know we are not supposed to but I prefer Tesco.

mm22bys · 18/02/2009 19:37

I try to avoid it if at all possible but some of their Extra Special stuff is OK.

Some of their meat can at times be better than at Waitrose.

Last time DH went there he saw someone trying to swap the price on roast pork to roast beef. Yes he did report him, and yes the security did question him on it (he agreed to pay the original price...)

mm22bys · 18/02/2009 19:38

Lidl is actually relatively expensive. I made the mistake of dropping into one on my way somewhere. Didn't realise it was cash only nor did I realise that they don't have any quick aisles.

Will not ever be going there again if I can help it.

I love Waitrose!

mm22bys · 18/02/2009 19:44

When I used to do loads of childrens clothes shopping I did get a fair bit of George stuff, but now that DS1 is in a school uniform and DS2 can just mostly wear DS1's old stuff, don't bother anymore, I go to BabyGap, but even that is hit and miss...

ASDA is within walking distance, but now I either go to Waitrose, or M&S. More expensive definitely but much nicer to shop in (and better quality too...)

ASDA was great when we were staying in a cottage in Suffolk, and they hadn't bothered to tell us that we would need to bring our own towels. We legged it to the local ASDA on Easter Friday and came away with 4 huge fluffy towels :-). Can't be all bad....

IotasCat · 18/02/2009 19:48

Our asda is fine. Huge shop good fresh meat and fish counters.

Some of their cheap stuff isn't that nice though even my cat wouldn't eat the smartprice tinned tuna

Meglet · 18/02/2009 19:52

I don't like our asda as they only sell 2 types of olives and no capers .

nzshar · 18/02/2009 20:03

We have one of the largest asda shops in the southern counties within walking distance from us. It is well stocked with fresh fruit etc and have no problem shopping there. Though when living in London would not have touched them with a ten foot barge pole. Their frest fruit, veg and meat was terrible!

Thunderduck · 18/02/2009 20:04

I've never had a problem with the Asda we use, the fruit and veg is fine.

mazzystartled · 18/02/2009 20:12

you know what ours is brill.
eco-friendly flagship store - natural light, everything chilled in proper chiller cabinets, great range of "crank" food and organic stuff. fruit and veg plentiful, good quality, cheap and not entirely from peru/israel/etc. freerange chicken and organic meat. i am converted.
we never touch the ready prepped stuff mind

TheSonnetts · 18/02/2009 20:50

I also find our one good.Fruit and veg. always good (certainly not inferior to the other supermarkets).

Don't buy the meat as we always have local free range butcher's meat.

Own brand is sometimes very good sometimes not but they do the 100% guarantee on this so if you don't like it for any reason you can have your money back.I also don't buy ready prepared stuff. Also shop in Aldi in the same way.

OrmIrian · 18/02/2009 20:51

Ours is a brand new big one.Maybe that makes a difference then,

Rollmops · 18/02/2009 21:06

Never been to ASDA so can't comment but we stopped buying our meat etc. from supermarkets, usually Sainsbury's or Waitrose, as it was so incredibly horrid despite the price . Getting a box of selected beef, lamb, free range pork-chicken etc. delivered from butchers and the difference is humongous. Oddly, we are spending slightly less on meaty stuff then before and getting quality and TASTE!
