To think that a lot of Asda stuff is crap quality ?

I don't usually use Asda as Tesco/Lidl are easier logistically but I gave it a go this week. I've had some yucky stuff from there before but so far this week I've had to chuck away some prepared casserole veg withn a BBD of tomorrow - when I opened it, it was a slimy mess at the bottom of the bag, some wafer thin ham which was more shiny gristle than ham, houmous which tasted like wallpaper paste (DDs verdict) and loo roll that you could spit through!

I wouldn't mind if I'd spent loads less but it worked out as expensive as anywere else.

Rollmops, butchers still deliver meat?

I can recommend Asda's strawberry and banana sticks for kids. Great stuff I think the range is called.

Rollmops · 18/02/2009 21:25

Oh yes, and what a meat (licks lips).....(dribbles and wonders if having a triple bacon BLT is OK after dinner).....

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 18/02/2009 21:59

@ Rollmops meat licking on an innocent Asda thread

Rollmops · 18/02/2009 22:05

Oopsie.... strange you mentioned that... DH commented on my lip-licking as well, heee....

love waitrose . all v good quality and all gets eaten. rather eat no meat the sausages that cost 16p

ingles2 · 18/02/2009 22:42

The quality must vary from area to area, depending on size of store, how busy etc..
We don't have an Adsa locally, just Waitrose and Tesco.
Had to stop shopping at Waitrose, the food was so shockingly awful, rotten fruit in a day or 2, stinking chicken well within date.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 18/02/2009 22:49

My butcher also delivers, as does my lovely fishmonger- to my work, no less, which is even better, as I don't have to wait in for my 2hr slot!

Would love to find a local market for fruit and veg, but sadly none, and local greengrocers either very expensive or dreadful quality , so stick to ordering in season veg which seems to be ok from our local tesco/ aldi. Am going to start my very own vegetable garden/ greenhouse this spring- very excited !! I did do a veg box, but it worked out v. expensive (we eat a lot of fruit and veg, and I had to supplement it. I also have frustratingly picky kids/ DH, who rebelled when faced with beetroot-but-in-a-cunning-disguise for the 6th week running!)

Hate asda with a passion. in fact, hate what all the big supermarkets have done to our high streets, all in the name of "choice"- ie, they come in, force all the little local shops into bankruptcy, then THEY decide what we want to eat!! There seems to be a conspiracy, as all the big guns seem to stock virtually the same things, which makes the idea of all this "choice" laughable

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 18/02/2009 22:57

For your butcher to deliver do you have to order a lot of meat?

Joolyjoolyjoo · 18/02/2009 23:04

I don't always! And we only have fish once a week and my fishmonger is happy to deliver that too- I think they are just out delivering. i've asked before do they have a minimum spend for delivery and they have both said no. if they did, I would just bulk buy and freeze- the difference between their meat and fish and the supermarkets' is honestly night and day

fledtoscotland · 18/02/2009 23:22

YANBU. i hate asda too and find them more expensive than morrisons or sainsburys as you have to buy their premuim ranges to get the same quality as normal stuff in other supermarkets. i never get fruit or veg from supermarkets anyway as its just sat in a cold store for months on end. my greengrocers is always busy

mazzystartled · 19/02/2009 09:25

i do love a trip round waitrose though, but the problem is whilst i can easily pass up asda's clothes and videos and stuff i find their edamame beans and fresh crab pate and 3001 sort of green tea etc much more difficult to resist.

i think you have to pick and choose wherever you go. we have cut our grocery bills in half by switching to asda (with a supplementary midweek greengrocer trip and a monthly excursion to lovely butchers nearby). supermarkets are all the same really, except tesco is more evil than the rest.

MadameCastafiore · 19/02/2009 09:29

We decided to only shop with Ocado now due to the dodgy sell by dates and poor qulaity of the food at other supermarkets.

Used to use Tesco or Sainsbury but had to chuck away veg and fruit as it just didn;t last so saving money buying cheaper stuff was a false economy - also Ocado deliver free at certain times of the day.

I have to say we shopped at Asda once and the clientele rather put us off - DS was spat at by a child in there and a thug almost reversed into our car then came out f'ing and blinding that we should have been looking where we were going - we were parked at the time so not sure why it was our fault!

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 19/02/2009 09:55

Mazzystartled - Do you buy all your months worth of meat in one go from the butcher and then freeze it?

Tanith · 19/02/2009 10:33

DH once used to do a delivery job to one of the Big Four supermarkets (5 letters). He said, when the fruit and veg was delivered, they just piled it up in the middle of the delivery yard under a large sheet of tarpaulin and left it there all day. Sometimes it was there for a couple of days. This was in the middle of summer in full sunshine.

mazzystartled · 19/02/2009 14:38

nope, only eat red meat @ once or twice per month, in between we buy asda free range corn fed chicken - its very tasty!; and occasionally fish from the fish man in van who rolls up every saturday. otherwise mainly eat veggie.

stealthsquiggle · 19/02/2009 14:50

YANBU. We use Asda for bulk-buying of nappies, wipes, household cleaning stuff etc (not Asda branded ones) and sometimes clothes for DC (especially pyjamas), Sainsburys/Tesco for all non-perishable foodstuffs (Sainsbury's basic tinned toms, etc) and milk - veg from farm shop and meat from butcher. Random other stuff from Waitrose.

That sounds complicated but it really isn't. We have given up eating supermarket meat and veg as we always seem to end up disappointed, and even before we did that we had given up buying food from Asda even though it was at the time our closest supermarket. They somehow manage to even mis-treat wine to the extent that the same wine would taste lousy from them and fine from Tesco/Sainsburys.

KingRolo · 19/02/2009 15:07

ASDA is shite, yes. I have a relative who worked at the head office who said that working practices were very dodgy indeed. Lots of targets to be met based on keeping costs down - like sourcing cheap and nasty suppliers, often at the other end of the country, for fruit and veg and ending contracts with good local suppliers.

I'm a fan of Morrisons - almost always good fruit and veg, nice fish counter and excellent fresh bread and pies! No clothes and crap either which is good as me and cash are easily parted.

josette · 19/02/2009 15:08

I somtimes go to Asda for tins/cleaning products... Lidl/aldi for loo roll or kitchen roll etc and sainsburys/ m and s/ waitrose/ local butchers for fresh produce.
I dont really like the fresh food at Asda... or Tescos. I am just lucky to live in an area where I have all the supermarkets relatively close so I can pick and choose.

OrmIrian · 20/02/2009 09:49

kingrolo - don't talk to me about Asda and suppliers We have to jump through hoops to supply them and they cut prices to the bone.

GetOrfMoiLand · 20/02/2009 10:52

I loathe Asda. There is a huge one about a mile away and DP wonders why hate going there, and drive an extra couple of miles to Sainsbos.

Asda is not even that cheap. THe meat is very expensive and hideous quality. Plus I loathe buying cheap foreign meat, will not spend my money on Irish beef, New Zealand lamb and Danish pork when this country is filled with animals.

Ditto the fruit and veg.

Plus has anyone noticed how expensive the wine is. And horrible crappy Blossom Hill type stuff at that.

It is good for clothes, towels and other crap, but not for food.

However, all the staff are unfailingly helpful and friendly, far more so than other supermarkets.

Sainsbury's is the best, their basic stuff is also very good and well priced.

Musicposy - how can you save money in Waitrose?! In our Waitrose you have to walk past the books, jewellery, make up, lovely kitchen stuff and fancy soaps to get to the food. I always succumc to temptaion!
