Perez Hilton has a lot to say about FB....

I will do link in a sec.

Look see what perezHilton put on his website re facebook

We're so glad we've never uploaded any of our stuff onto Facebook!

You Facebook users are SCREWED.

Did you know that everything you've loaded up into your profile (personal pictures, etc.) belongs to Facebook, even after you've closed your account?

That's what it says in the Terms of Service you agreed to when you opened your account, apparently.

The Consumerist recently uncovered this disturbing info and it's causing quite a stir.

So, what does this mean?

Basically, Facebook can do whatever the hell they want with YOUR STUFF.

And, they can do so WITHOUT your permission.

For example, they can license your personal pictures out to companies, make a shizzle of money and don't have to give you a dime.

Sounds really, really shitty and sooo shady!!!!!

LadyOfWaffle · 16/02/2009 21:20

I am deleting alot soon (once have downloaded photos back onto a CD) - starting to give me the heebie geebies.

BarcodeZebra · 16/02/2009 21:21

I'm wetting myself laughing at the thought of anyone making money out of my pictures.

Good luck to 'em.

(Although, clearly I'm concerned for the personal liberties of others, naturally)

artichokes · 16/02/2009 21:21

In theory it might mean they can do as he describes. In reality it is VERY unlikely. If they treat their customers like that they will lose them. It is bad business. Also how many of us have posted anything that they would want to use or could make money from using? Very, very few I imagine.

TBH I am not a big business consipracy theorist. I am totally relaxed about FB.

IceCreamy · 16/02/2009 21:23

wishing I hadnt put pics of my kids on...

OP posts:
harpomarx · 16/02/2009 21:24

I'm pretty relaxed about it too, but don't put any photos I would be embarrassed about up and generally check with people before I put any pics up that they are in. I do think some people are pretty careless about the stuff they put up and maybe don't realize that as soon as they comment or tag things loads of other people can see that pic.

IceCreamy · 16/02/2009 21:25

but you have no control over what pics of you your friends/ other Fb users put up,

OP posts:
artichokes · 16/02/2009 21:26

IceCreamy - What on earth do you imagine that FB might do with photos of your kids? They are hardly going to sell them to some porn ring. They are a huge, high-profile US business whose owners and creators are well known. They don't need to make money from such dodgy dealings and they would not because it would kill their business.

mrsturnip · 16/02/2009 21:26

what on earth would they want to do with photos of your kids? You signed something similar when you signed up here. What you say on here is copyrighted to MN (or something similar).

IceCreamy · 16/02/2009 21:27

Barcode Zebra - - you might see yourself in a very embarrassing advert!!
or in the audience at a strip club!

OP posts:
IceCreamy · 16/02/2009 21:27

but MN we are all using aliases

OP posts:
toddlerama · 16/02/2009 21:27

How on earth can they make any gain from 'owning' pictures of anyone? And why are you worried about pics of your kids, Icecreamy? What have I missed here?

IceCreamy · 16/02/2009 21:28

just panicking re- kids.

OP posts:
gemmiegoatlegs · 16/02/2009 21:29

I have made sure my dcs have had facial reconstructions so they will be ok.

I have just read through the FB terms and i can't find anything so explicitly scary...just a load of crap about advertising to you, and how they keep your info for a "reasonable mount of time" after you make an alteration in case you want to revert back to the original version. I can live with that.

harpomarx · 16/02/2009 21:29

well, I didn't have any control before I was on FB IceCreamy - but now I am I could ask them to delete it I suppose!

anyway, it's been years since I did anything interesting embarrassing enough to be worried about

IceCreamy · 16/02/2009 21:29

anyway its not so much they own the pics, but the details ie email addresses, names, all of that jazz.

identity theft is apparently growing with FB

OP posts:
artichokes · 16/02/2009 21:29

But why are you panicing? What do you think they will do?

BarcodeZebra · 16/02/2009 21:29

My FB profile picture is of my knee poking through my worn out jeans. It's a strip club in and of itself. Not worried.

IceCreamy · 16/02/2009 21:32

as mentioned by another poster people dont realise the implications of what they post up there...ie. when you tag a picture it appears all over the show on all those feeds; and people arent always aware they have to set their security to private etc.

I was shocked to see a friend of mine had her mobile number up; she is a smart cookie in RL but I think she was silly doing that.

OP posts:
IceCreamy · 16/02/2009 21:34

oh I get in a flap watching the 6oclock news. any excuse.

just dont like thinking fb are holding data of mine. even now I have deleted my a/c

OP posts:
mrsturnip · 16/02/2009 21:34

well I'm on there under a name I no longer use with an email address that 100's of websites must have collected at some stage. Still not really understanding the problem.

By law every website should have a privacy policy. I have a ludicrous sounding one on mine because it was drawn up by lawyers for free as a competition win.

BarcodeZebra · 16/02/2009 21:40

My whole profile on FB with the exception of my name is entirely made up. My religion is listed as Roman Centurion FGS.

If you put your whole life up there in detail then you're probably asking for trouble (like your friend's mobile no.) but seriously, who does that?

harpomarx · 16/02/2009 21:45

blimey, I thought I was the only Roman Centurion on there!

BarcodeZebra · 16/02/2009 22:07

Ave! Harpo!

That is soooo going on the next census form. we'll show those bloody Jedi...
