I think anyone who puts all of thier details on FB is asking for trouble - some people out thier entire names, and birthday and email for all to see - they shouldn't be suprised if someone steels thier identity.

I don't have my real name posted, but the name I'm gernerally know by - and like hell I'd let anyone know the year I was born.

harpomarx · 16/02/2009 22:13

Harpus Marxus to you my friend

Oovavu · 16/02/2009 22:18

how do you cancel your account? can't find it on the website

TinkerBellesMumandFiFi2 · 16/02/2009 22:37

"I was shocked to see a friend of mine had her mobile number up; she is a smart cookie in RL but I think she was silly doing that."

If you log on to FB from your mobile you can call people through the site (hit a link and it calls them from your mobile).

wannaBe · 16/02/2009 22:52

I only have one picture up on facebook (my profile picture) so I think I'm safe.

And my mobile number is only visible to those on my profile, and I think most of them have it anyway.

As for the rest, my view is that you shouldn't put anything on the net you don't want anyone to see. But I certainly don't think the founders of facebook would be looking to sell pictures of my child to paedo rings - I think there's more money to be made through the advertising on fb.

mshadowsisfab · 16/02/2009 22:56

oh know, I have a picture of one of my feet on there. if they sell it I will have to hop.

mshadowsisfab · 16/02/2009 22:56

no not know

wannaBe · 16/02/2009 22:59

perhaps we could start a group. To find the most sellable picture...?

BabyBump2B · 17/02/2009 00:44

The facebook issue is that they've changed their Terms of Service (TOS) so that they own whatever you post on there - EVEN if you delete your account.

So if you have pics of your kids they could sell that pic to Gerber without your permission and Gerber could use it in an ad campaign and there would be nothing you can do about it.

The issue is coming to light because it turns out that FB has been selling copies of people's profiles to perspective employers in the US.

So it might not be a big deal to you now but what if you posted that you were worried about your mum being hospitalised and then went for a job interview and they got a copy of your info from FB and turned you down for the job because you mom was hospitalised and they didn't think your focus would be on the job.

They have your photos and personal info and right now they can give that to whoever wants to pay them for it.

I doubt anyone would ever want a pic of me for something but if someone did why should facebook get the money and not me?

alipiggie · 17/02/2009 01:35

The internet is very much viewed public property and Terms of Service of Facebook come as no surprise to me. That is one reason why I will never post pictures of my children on a public forum. Me - so what probably scare most people off.

ninedragons · 17/02/2009 02:44

Virgin Mobile did exactly this in Australia. They got some poor kid's photo off Flickr and used it in a sarcastic advert.

News story here

chainstitch · 17/02/2009 02:57

yes, but they could get that off mumsnet or any other website as well.

kitbit · 17/02/2009 16:02

So surely the lesson here is not to post anything that you wouldn't want used or repeated? Isn't that a general life lesson anyway?

wotulookinat · 17/02/2009 16:19

What has Perez Hilton got to do with it? He reminds me an awful lot of my ex.

RnR · 17/02/2009 19:02

I tried to delete stuff once, changed my mind and ALL the info deleted came right back at me.

nzshar · 17/02/2009 19:36

And?! So?! Jesus the t'internet has been around long enough for people to KNOW that what you write, put on it is there for everyone to use, see. Living in cuckoo land if you think otherwise!

Nabster · 17/02/2009 19:42

I'd quite like to delete my photos.

RnR · 17/02/2009 19:47

A bit hot under the collar there nzshar...chill.

nzshar · 17/02/2009 19:52

nope not hot just mildly warm

EachPeachPearMum · 17/02/2009 19:56

Why, why, why would you put personal information that you didn't want shared on a social networking site anyway?

FFS, people need to wise up about what they put out on the www.

WibblyPigRocks · 17/02/2009 20:00

I haven't given anything to facebook that I'm not happy with. I agree Barcode Zebra - who are these people putting really personal stuff on there? I don't have to have read the terms and conditions (although I have) to know it's a bloody internet page and, even with my privacy settings, anyone can read it!!

There are a lot of companies that hold the same data about me - through online shopping, loyalty cards etc. Yes, we have to be sensible about the rise in identity fraud, but scaremongering (sp?) doesn't do any good either.

As for pics of DCs - of course everyone wants those photos - my DS is the most gorgeous baby there has ever been!!!!

BarcodeZebra · 17/02/2009 20:14

The whole issue with prospective employers is negated if you set your account to be visible to friends only.

I always look up the folk I'm interviewing and if I can't see their profile I'm at least reassured that they are savvy enough to have thought through that aspect of their life.

LoisGriffin · 17/02/2009 20:29

guess what my profile pic is....

Kaz1967 · 18/02/2009 01:11

has anyone read their terms and conditions?
