I read everything, spoke to everyone, felt like I was doing the right thing, now 1 week later he has a temp of 40.3, been sleeping for 2 days, crying, unhappy, moody, cross etc etc.

I am exhusted, worried he may "regress" like I kept reading..........what have I done......

This can be a normal reaction to the mmr. DD had mild measles symptoms (by mild I mean raging temperature and pretty poorly, but compared to the real deal, mild) and no lasting harm.

Ditto ds.

If you are concerned about the current illness defo worth getting him checked over, just in case it is unrelated IYSWIM.

Thank-you for reassuring words.......I just help but think about all that I have read adn now he is so poorly I can't help but worry we made the wrong decision.

You make the best decision you can with the information you have available.

Imagine how you'd feel if he'd got measles and you hadn't had him vaccinated....

Even if you do believe that the MMR can cause regression the number involved are miniscule, and many many more children have side-effects like your ds with no lasting effects.

pooka · 31/01/2009 22:38

What DMS said. [Love Spaced too, incidentally]

tryingtobemarypoppins · 31/01/2009 22:39

My DS had a temp last night of over 40 after MMR last week. Been terrible on and off today. I was going to ask if anyone else had had this reaction, so interesting thread.

ChiefMangosuthuButhelezi · 31/01/2009 22:41

Give NHS direct a call tonight if you are concerned. A nurse will call you back, and advise you about the high temperature etc.

potoroo · 31/01/2009 23:07

hytter
If it helps, there is a virus like that doing the rounds of work and nursery at the moment.

DH, who never gets ill and sleeps about 6 hours a night, came home with a temp last Friday, fell asleep at the table and slept for about 36 hours.

A friend at work and her daughter also had it with it exactly the same symptons last week. Staff at DS/DD's nursery said that it is going around there too - high temps and sleeping.

Please do ring NHS if you are concerned - but don't beat yourself up - it may be completely unrelated, and even if it is not... what DMS said...

Foyle · 31/01/2009 23:13

Mine had the MMR on Thursday and was bouncing off the walls this evening- crying at every turn and not sure what he wanted. No temperature but sleeping gone a bit erratic. But I still think MMR is worth it. He won't remember it and the long term gains are worth it. More worryingly for me, I also found that he has dropped 3 percentiles in height in the last year... is that normal? He was at 91% at 3 months and now is at 9-20... strikes me that that isn't right....? am i just being neurotic? (it kicks in at this time of night!)

tryingtobemarypoppins · 31/01/2009 23:29

I wouldn't worry too much. So many babies weights do this, droping from 99th to 50th and so on. I don't know many people who even get their childs height measured so they wouldn't know anyway! They move around, wearing different clothes etc, the charts are never going to be spot on.

lilolilmanchester · 01/02/2009 00:17

Hi Hytter...my DCs are 15 and 11, both had the MMR. We had a marvellous HV at the time who said that if the child reacted to the vaccine, then they would have had an even worse reaction to the actual diseases. Not sure if that helps... hope your DS gets over it soon.

QS · 01/02/2009 00:51

It is a high temperature. I hope you will get your little one checked over and not just assume it is related to the mmr. It might not be.

campion · 01/02/2009 11:30

What QS says.

lou031205 · 01/02/2009 11:58

Doubt it's the MMR, tbh.

DD2 had temp of 40.2 last week and was sleeping almost all day for a couple of days, then has had it again this week.

DD1 had temp of 40.8 last night, and this morning was shaking and teeth chattering as she was so hot.

It is 12pm, and both girls have already had 2 naps since getting up this morning.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 01/02/2009 19:00

Just to say that whilst DS is still not himself he is much better today Hytter, his temp has come down etc.

QS and Lou031205 - have you read the warning label on the MMR? Whilst of course it could be by chance he was coming down with something I don't agree, espeacially 10 days after MMR and if you have ever read the warning leaflet your know what I mean......its not the nicest of jabs to have!

Qally · 01/02/2009 19:07

My DH had the MMR last month (we discovered his mother had avoided all shots for him when she started telling us not to vaccinate DS against anything; he was a tiddler when the big pertissus scare was afoot - DH called the surgery to book everything necessary the next day...) and he felt really grotty after, too. I react that way to typhoid jabs, myself. I think priming the immune system against a really nasty bug is likely to make a lot of people feel a bit unwell - my comfort is, as lilolilmanchester says, that the real deal is going to be a damn sight worse for the vast, vast majority.

So glad your little chap's feeling better - and hope he's not been as grouchy as my DH was!

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 01/02/2009 19:10

My ds was fine right after his then day 7-9 afterwards he was really poorly - temp, sleeping, lethargic and i felt the same - i went back to the docs as i was worried and got some reassurance - now i am pleased he had it. If you worried get him checked.

I know its probably hard just know but if you hadnt have had him vaccinated and he had caught measles in the future then he would have been much much worse - it *isnt the same as chicken pox - it can be fatal, it an cause blindness.

I'm sure in a few days he will be back to his normal self.

Give the NHS24 a call - they wil advise regards temperature, and hopefully put your mind at rest

tryingtobemarypoppins · 01/02/2009 19:18

Thank-you, homeopath sounds a good idea too. I think my DS has managed much better than mu husband would have Qally!

I think everyone is so quick to want to reassure you the MMR is safe they perhaps forget to mention it can knock some babies for 6!

TotalChaos · 01/02/2009 19:18

if you look at this thread, for jimjams post, jimjams has some useful suggestions about dealing with MMR side-effects:-

Hope he feels better soon.

Thanks so much TotalChaos.

Riven - I don't know what to say other than being a parent and making decisions is just so hard. Ironically geordieminx I had been considering the chicken pox vac as well.......not so sure now......
