I read everything, spoke to everyone, felt like I was doing the right thing, now 1 week later he has a temp of 40.3, been sleeping for 2 days, crying, unhappy, moody, cross etc etc.

I am exhusted, worried he may "regress" like I kept reading..........what have I done......

I had an autoimmune reaction to chickenpox aged 8 - platelet count so low I spent 6m in hospital and needed a splenectomy - which in itself means I'm immunocompromised for life. Chickenpox may be benign in most children, but it wasn't in my case.

RachePache · 01/02/2009 20:40

Varicella vaccine in ch 34 of The Green Book. Live attenuated vaccine means that a chickenpox infection after vaccination is rare.

Wonderstuff · 01/02/2009 20:42

Kerry I think the research that's been done over many years suggests that actually it is pretty safe, much safer than the alternatives and so parents vaccinating their children are not in fact 'fucking nuts' but doing the best for their children and society at large?

Wonderstuff · 01/02/2009 20:44

Also if the child get cp from the vaccine it will be a mild version of the illness and the point of the vaccine is not to prevent cp in children where it is rarely dangerous but in adults where it is more serious and can cause miscarrage

tryingtobemarypoppins · 01/02/2009 20:44

WhatFreshHellIsThis and RachePache I wish people who say Chichen Pox is harmless would listen to storys like yours.

Kerrymumbles I am not nuts, I read and considered very carefully. I have protected my child in the best way I can.

ChiefMangosuthuButhelezi · 01/02/2009 20:52

I had chicken pox last year and so did the kids. Ds1 didn't seem to be too bothered but ds2 was quite poorly with it.
I had spots everywhere, even 'down below', it was really nasty.

Thankyou RachePache just finished reading the Green Book chapter. It confirmed waiting 4 weeks after the MMR. Thanks for that.

KerryMumbles where on earth have you got the information that "cp vaccine can do just as much damage to susceptible individuals as the virus itself"? The very fact that your child had to have anti-virals surly tells you just how mad CP can be?

"no actually I do believe that anyone who simultaneously has three or four live viruses injected into their baby is out of their minds. "

From a medical point of few a baby could have 100's of jabs at the same time......don't like the idea myself but that's what they say.

MissGreatBritain · 01/02/2009 21:08

DS was just like this after his MMR. I called out the emergency doc in the night because he was beating his head against the bars of his cot and was clearly beside himself. By the time the doc arrived he was sleeping. Doc explained that having the jab gives the child a tiny dose of each illness, so it was likely that he really was feeling headachy/tired/grumpy and was scared because he didn't know what it was. He was quite poorly for about 2 or 3 days. After that he was fine. He had the booster some time later and it didn't seem to have any effect at all. He's 6 now but I still remember how scary it was and how guilty I felt. Hope he's soon over it x

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 01/02/2009 21:09

Can I just point out that the OP is concerned about her son, and this might not be the place to start a discussion about vax and their dangers. She doesn't need people making her scared or calling her nuts, she needs support and reassurance.

My friend's DS nearly died - had no pulse or blood pressure - from Chicken Pox.

I am dreading DS2 getting it (and agonised when DS1 and DD had it).

I would welcome a vaccination. Although would prefer it seperate from MMR tbh.

Odd? I was told by my GP that it is 75 to 85 percent effective in preventing mild chickenpox and 95% for the most serious.

"Based on our knowledge of how the virus works and the data available so far, it doesn't appear that the rate of shingles cases in vaccinated individuals will be any greater than in the naturally infected population" FDA.GOV

Dillydaydreamer · 01/02/2009 21:24

The human body is susceptible to thousands of viruses in their lifetime, very few cause terrible complications. If you consider that there are thousands of flu and common cold viruses which babies come into contact daily and weather very well usually. They have fairly well developed immune systems by the time the MMR is given.
It has also been found that many of the children who have regressed had bowel disorders, lots of ear infections etc before MMR and that their system appeared to be immune suppressed (prone to infection) prior to MMR. If I had a child who was continually unwell before MMR was due I might ask for a blood screen to check for an immune disorder before giving it, the theory being that the MMR might be the final straw where the body cannot cope and regression then occurs.
In your case OP I believe the high temp is perfectly usual and wouldn't worry as the vaccine mimics the incubation period for the illness and therefore 7-10 days would be the prime time for feeling its effects. HTH

Kerrymumbles your links are to really unhelpful scare mungering websites that don't help any parent make a descision that's based upon edvidence or fact.

loobeylou · 01/02/2009 21:25

a couple of yrs ago at our local hospital a woman who was 37 weeks pg DIED from chicken pox...it can and does cause HORRENDOUS pg complications to mother and child

Dillydaydreamer · 01/02/2009 21:27

KM by the time the first spot appears that child can have been in contact with several pregnant women, elderly people, immuno compromised people etc and has risked serious ill health to those people. The more people are vaccinated the lower the risk to everyone, it isn't just about the outcome for one individual. This is something you conveniently forgot.

Totally agree Dillydaydreamer. What's your view on CP?

Very helpful Misgreatbritian, i'm glad she was fine with the booster, I was wondering about that.
