to be appalled when 'intelligent' people speak of 'pikeys' and ' gypos'

I live in a small provincial cathedral city. It is a white, Daily Mail/Torygraph reading kind of place.

OK, I can sort of live with that even if it is all church schools and 11+. I've lately been taken aback by the easy resort to using terms such as 'chav', 'pokey' or 'gypo' on relation to anyone who seems less well off or intelligent. These people are police officers, teachers or immigration officers too!

AIBU to think this is dated and offensive? No wonder. Jimmy Carr always has a tour date here!

That should be 'pikey' not pokey!

probably the wrong thing to worry about, but whats wrong with jimmy carr?

2shoes · 31/01/2009 19:00

go on debs tell her

noonki · 31/01/2009 19:01

sorry you lost me when you equated being intellegent with reading the Mail/telegraph!

No surprise that they are pig ignorant.

Coldtits · 31/01/2009 19:02

YANBU

ANd Jimmy Carr is an idiot who makes poorly veiled fascist remarks.

AnarchyAunt · 31/01/2009 19:04

Not sure who JImmy Carr is, but I will google him (though no doubt he will harm my computer )

As for the pikey/chav/gyppo thing, YANBU. It is offensive in the extreme.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 31/01/2009 19:06

Blimey if that's what the intelligent people in your area speak like/read what are the less academically gifted like?

sorrento · 31/01/2009 19:07

Ok you cannot control what people think and it's about time people realised, some people don't like other people full stop.

SniffyHock · 31/01/2009 19:08

Are you in Canterbury perchance??

Lemontart · 31/01/2009 19:09

I was taken aback at the term pikey being used on a thread last year at some point. Amazed at the number of people who seemed to be relaxed about it. Very offensive and ignorant IMO. YANBU

ManIFeelLikeAWoman · 31/01/2009 19:10

Sniffy, do you know, I was just about to ask the same thing?

noonki · 31/01/2009 19:12

chester?

twinsetandpearls · 31/01/2009 19:14

I like Jimmy Carr and intelligent people do not read the mail.

choosyfloosy · 31/01/2009 19:14

Not Winchester is it? Sounds like it.

An incredible proportion of the population STILL thinks all that sort of thing is normal.

choosyfloosy · 31/01/2009 19:16

Amazing isn't it how all of us have a different smallminded provincial city in mind!

ManIFeelLikeAWoman · 31/01/2009 19:17

LOL that everyone from a provincial cathedral city is recognising THEIR city ...

troutpout · 31/01/2009 19:17

yanbu
and jimmy carr makes my blood boil

Wonderstuff · 31/01/2009 19:18

I am often offended by the DM but I really like Jimmy Carr!

Not sure where I stand on the chav/pikey thing tbh, yanbu to think it is offensive in thee terms you have described, to me chav describes a certain type of person not just poor or thick but thoughtless and selfish. I would also use the term pikey, not to describe all travellers, but definitely to describe the choice bunch who recently set up near our school, intimidated the kids and left huge amounts of rubbish when they left.

[runs for cover]

TheNinkynork · 31/01/2009 19:19

"Gyppo", surely?

"Gypo" sounds like a specialised branch of medicine:

"I had the most enormous crush on my Gypo following the birth of Peregrine Tarquin Horace III"

Blondilocks · 31/01/2009 19:19

Spot on twinsetandpearls!

Jimmy Carr has a tour date practically everywhere.

debs40 · 31/01/2009 19:20

I use the word 'intelligent' as this is how they see themselves!

Sorrento - I agree you can't control what they think. I'm talking about my reaction to it and the fact it is, I think, unusual to express these views as if they were the norm.

Yes, jimmy carr is a twat and pretends he is being 'ironic' or 'post modern' in his vitriolic hate speech which dim witted racist types find amusing.

Heh, that's how I see him anyway!

Nope, not Canterbury but Salisbury!

OP posts:
twinsetandpearls · 31/01/2009 19:20

I would never use the word pikey. that mumsnetters would.

twinsetandpearls · 31/01/2009 19:21

I am supposed to be going to Salisbury tomorrow.

Wonderstuff · 31/01/2009 19:23

I wouldn't normally TSAP but if you had seen the behaviour of this lot you would understand. They were vile.

debs40 · 31/01/2009 19:23

true but no one else seems to come here!

Intelligent was in ' '!
