Racist or not?

At our local train station at the weekend with ds 12, he was looking at news stand, while i was getting train tickets.

Anyhow at news stand there was a section which had black magazines ie black hair, black beauty, black music etc, etc. Ds asked me why do black people have their own mags and would it be racist if white people had their own magazines ie white hair, white beauty etc etc.

Your thoughts, would it??

Yes claws but not in the way you choose to interpret our answers.

A magazine named 'white' this that or the other, would be seen as racist towards black people. Not whites. It would be seen as an inappropriate celebration of whiteness in a social context in which white is the dominant culture.

And a magazine called 'black this that or the other' is not racist towards white people, because the actions of a minority who (on the whole) are still disempowered in a society cannot, by default be racist. They might be prejudicial and stereotyped.

You are the one who is persisting with a shallow idea of categories. The rest of us are saying the categories in themselves don't make racism. They are just the tools of racism.

FriarKewcumber · 26/01/2009 16:01

Quite Wilf - "white" in the context of descibing something as White -white power, white club has become associated with "white supremacist" so like it or not the descriptor "white" is now tainterd with that brush in a way that "black" isn't.

If white people hadn't so many people of differnet countries cultures and colours so effectively then it probably wouldn't have the same conotation. Having benefited from the good old Victorian Empire, we can hardly complain about it now

FriarKewcumber · 26/01/2009 16:03

so much bad spelling, so pointless arguing this. Am going to have a lie down in a darkened room with troutpout.

But can you really not see that moaning about magazines with black in the title when you are white makes you look like the person complaining that someone with a broken back has crutches, when you, with your stubbed toe don't.

claw3, as I said back at the beginning it's a waste of time and breath. Black people are never racist.

FriarKewcumber · 26/01/2009 16:09

pmsl - I meant my spelling...

onager · 26/01/2009 16:10

TheBurnsifiedEffect, I think what you're describing is saying something and having everyone post to say how right you are.

pagwatch · 26/01/2009 16:11

at Friar being told to fuck off for pointing out that her own spelling is crap.

Frair - give yourself a wedgie this instant

Pingping · 26/01/2009 16:13

Claw 3 read this [http://www.biography.com/blackhistory/featured-biography/index.jsp Black History]

This site will show you the struggle that black people faced on a day to day year to year decade to decade basis it may also explain why black people taking ownership of there culture is a good thing and how for years they had such a hard fight to be able to do this.

If you look at 'white history' Persay we never endured this stuggle.

FriarKewcumber · 26/01/2009 16:14

and (as I stated earlier) onager - black people can of course be racist. But I don't think in this case thats relevant, the purpose of minority magazines of any sort is materialistic (will we make money?) and practical(not sufficient coverage of the interest in mainstream press).

As I have stated before I think this is a serious over anaylsis of a non-problem.

(shall now fuck off as instructed)

Pingping · 26/01/2009 16:19

Onager that is a stupid comment to make.

Let me ask you and claw3 when you see a mag that says blackbeauty or black hair
does it make you feel racially violated do you feel people are discriminating against because your white and don't have afro hair?

Friar - Course you did, along with posts like 'did you miss the 27 posts, obviously you did' and banging your head against a brick wall posts.

This is what i love about these threads, you and a few others, see the insult band wagon and just have to jump on it. Got the gang behind you, so lets start with the insults kinda thing.

Highly amusing how grown women revert to playground tactics LOL

Dont beat around the bush, just say fuck off!!

I shall take my own advice and fuck off too now!

If something is racist, dosn;t it need to pertain to a race who has undergone oppression? White people haven't by any stretch of the imagination, so people at the mo can discrimate agianbst white people but it's not racism. I don;t think anyway.

pagwatch · 26/01/2009 16:31

TBH claw I don't think it is a bandwagon. I don't know most people on this thread but it is an odd op followed by you appearing determined to ignore every single point put to you.

claw3 · 26/01/2009 16:34

Pagwatch - Just dont see the need for insults, just because someone isnt agreeing with you. A form of bullying i believe.

I have been trying to answer those lining up to disagree, sorry if i didnt reply to all.

OP posts:
claw3 · 26/01/2009 16:37

So to sum up you cant be racist if youre in a minority? and you cant be a victim of racism unless youve been oppression in the past?

What a load of rubbish!!

OP posts:
FriarKewcumber · 26/01/2009 16:37

sorry if you thought I meant your spelling. Though am more than a trifle irked at being called a liar . Thats not nice, Claw - would you like me to list the spelling mistakes in my post that made me post that comment?

I don't notice anyone else's spelling. Ever. Only my own. Don't give a stuff if you can spell or not but am a tad frustrated by you starting a thread then not taking any notice of what several people have said repeatedly (on one particular issue). Pointing it out to you (albeit a tad sarcastically in good old MN stlyee) was the last resort of a frutrated woman.

I have no gang as far as I'm aware.

Several people agreeing should not always be dismissed as beign a "gang". Sometimes its because you have the minority view and few people agree with you. I have been in that position on several occasions. It would be more gracious to accept that most of us don't agree with you than to accuse people of ganging up.

Pingping · 26/01/2009 16:37

Who said that Claw3?

claw3 · 26/01/2009 16:40

Friar - Perhaps i was being a tad defensive and assumed you meant me because of prior posts.

Your apology is accepted LOL

OP posts:
FriarKewcumber · 26/01/2009 16:41

"Dont beat around the bush, just say fuck off!!"

Would rather not, if its all the same to you. Was trying (as you asked) to have a discussion. Telling someone to fuck off if they don't agree with me makes that a bit pointless.

claw3 · 26/01/2009 16:42

Ping - I have no idea and i cant be bothered to back track to find the posts.

OP posts:
Pingping · 26/01/2009 16:42

Claw3 I do think you are looking into the title of the Mag to much and making it a racial issue when its clearly not titled that way to offend people.
