Racist or not?

At our local train station at the weekend with ds 12, he was looking at news stand, while i was getting train tickets.

Anyhow at news stand there was a section which had black magazines ie black hair, black beauty, black music etc, etc. Ds asked me why do black people have their own mags and would it be racist if white people had their own magazines ie white hair, white beauty etc etc.

Your thoughts, would it??

I bought Autism News at Smiths a couple of months ago.
Perhaps I secretely loathe NT people.

MrsMattie · 26/01/2009 14:50

'Urban' is a stupid word, anyway. It's music of black origin marketed without using the word 'black' to (unbelievably) make it more palatable.

pagwatch · 26/01/2009 14:50

and people who can spell

MrsMattie · 26/01/2009 14:51

lol@Ping - you're in the minority on MN, love. Not many bashment fans here

claw3 · 26/01/2009 14:52

Ping - Why have a mag called black music?

All this black/white ownership is one of the causes of racism.

Mainstream magazines make absolutely no effort to cater for the needs of ethnic minorities. That is why I don't buy them. Afro-centric magazines exist because they cater to the needs of their buyers who are ignored by the mainstream. If they did not exist, the needs of that audience would be forever ignored.

From Claw3 "i didnt think it was fair to segregate people into catergories based on their skin colour."

Errr, the mainstream media do this all the time my dear. Aspiration and reality are miles apart and it very easy to be self-righteous about it in the way that you are being. You obviously have no clue about the reality of the media's attitude to non-whites so I suggest you educate yourself and stop writing rubbish.

MrsMattie · 26/01/2009 14:55

Pretending to be colour blind and breaking out into a rendition of 'What the world needs now is lurrrrve' is not the answer@claw3.

You'd be better off talking to your son openly and honestly about issues regarding race in the real world if you want him to grow into a well informed, fair person who judges people on merit not skin colour. Pretending not to see their differences isn't going to ingratiate him with people of other races.

FAQtothefuture · 26/01/2009 14:55

It's a genre of music, and a lot of people (of all races) are interested in it. So if someone is interested in black music then a magazine called that will appeal to them, just in the same way that a fishing magazine will appeal to someone interseted in fishing, or a computer magazine will appeal to someone with an interest in computers.

Claw you have got the wrong end of the stick about cultural ownership. People who have different backgrounds should be allowed to celebrate this, hence black music, jewish chronicle, scottish brides etc. It isn't a cause of racism, being different is ok there is nothing wrong with minority interest magazines.

saadia · 26/01/2009 14:56

music and magazines do not cause racism, where did you get this idea from?

Monkeytrousers · 26/01/2009 14:56

Fishermen have their own magazines too. Does that make them ..erm..fishermenist?

claw3 · 26/01/2009 14:58

Spokette - "i didnt think it was fair to segregate people into catergories based on their skin colour."

So how would you have answered would it be racist to have magazines entitled 'white' whatever then?

Pingping · 26/01/2009 14:58

MrsMattie · 26/01/2009 15:00

Its like knocking but there's nobody home...

claw3, have you not read this thread in it's entirety?

Pingping · 26/01/2009 15:01

Claw3 its a pointless arguement with you

Please try reading what people have posted

Spokette well said.

spokette · 26/01/2009 15:03

Claw3

The magazines already exist doh. It is implicit in their content and the audience they cater for. There is no need for them to use white because they cater for the majority.

You are making an argument out of nothing and clearly have resentment issues about blacks having something that cater to their needs.

Pingping · 26/01/2009 15:16

ROFL troutpout

claw3 · 26/01/2009 15:49

Spookette - They are not entitled 'white whatever' though are they.

That was my ds's question, would magazines entitled white hair, white music, white beauty etc, be considered racist.

OP posts:
WilfSell · 26/01/2009 15:51

The answer claws3, though you choose not to accept it, is yes, magzines named in that way would be considered racist. In a way that magazines named 'black' etc are not. For all the reasons we have explained.

Or would you like me to explain again?

claw3 · 26/01/2009 15:52

Thanks, you lot have answered my question, YES it would be considered racist for a magazine to be named 'white' whatever.

OP posts:
FriarKewcumber · 26/01/2009 15:52

Claw - so races/colours should not be segregated and therefore non-white targeted magazines must stop this racist pandering to their readership?

If I were afrocaribean or chinese or indian or Bengali or Kazakh I would say "You first".

Don't you think that lecturing minority publications which sprang up to fill the void of non-whites in the media about how they are perpetuating racism is a tad, well... silly?

If you are so anti-racist we could probably find any number of issues which would be a better use of your energy - if you are so devoted to the anti-racist cause.

claw3 · 26/01/2009 15:56

Sorry i thought the whole point of a discussion was for people to oppose points of views or did you not read the disclaimer at the top!

As i stated very early on, playing devils advocate for those who keep telling me to read the bloody thread.
