They ARE. They are so pretty on the outside, but them impossibly dreary on the inside, taste horrible, and upset my stomach. They're WRONG. Just wronng.

I love moussaka!

Thunderduck · 18/01/2009 15:46

They are lovely.

shootfromthehip · 18/01/2009 15:46

I like them...

Habbibu · 18/01/2009 15:48

Oh, come ON. You fraeks. They're an exercise in culinary disappointment.

duchesse · 18/01/2009 15:56

They're LOVELY! You are wrong!!

Slice lengthways, salt them, crush some garlic over them, dribble (I hate the word drizzle) them with olive oil, stick em in the oven for a while. Yum yum yum yum yum.

Habbibu · 18/01/2009 15:57

shocking waste of salt, oil, and heat, duchesse...

Dh would agree with you, but I think YABU.

I love a stuffed aubergine, me.

duchesse · 18/01/2009 15:58

ratatouille.

drool

AliceTheCamelHasGotTheHump · 18/01/2009 15:58

There are few things more sublime that slices of aubergine battered and deep fried.

AliceTheCamelHasGotTheHump · 18/01/2009 15:59

My granny calls them ow-ber-gines (gine rhymes with wine, and with a hard g).

wotsits · 18/01/2009 15:59

I prefer a nice brinjal myself.
They're nice in a fish or chicken curry.

Divineintervention · 18/01/2009 15:59

Alice anything is lovely battered and deep fried.... have you been to a harvester before?

GossipMonger · 18/01/2009 16:00

yummy!

Roasted with tomatoes and butternut squash.

YABU.

MrsTittleMouse · 18/01/2009 16:00

They are my nemesis - I used to be a fairly good cook (pre-children) but I made some hideous aubergine dishes.

FriendNeedsHelp · 18/01/2009 16:00

Lol at your granny, Alice - my mum always gets them confused with artichokes.

Habbibu · 18/01/2009 16:01

Well, exactly, DivineI. It's what you do to disguise horrible tastes.

Aubergines are indeed the work of the devil. They rate as the most horriblest vegetable along with pumpkin, which is truely the food of Satan!

duchesse · 18/01/2009 16:03

Aw come on, I was only dribbling olive oil last time. It's very good for the complexion you know. Clinically proven to be vastly superior to L'Oreal many other vastly overpriced skincare products.

duchesse · 18/01/2009 16:05

I can't let that vicious slur on pumpkin go by unnoticed either, I'm afraid: roasted pumpkin soup, a creamy autumn delight. Try it, you may change your mind.

Incidentally, I hate to be pedantic , but both aubergines and pumpkins are not taxonomically vegetables, but fruits!

Habbibu · 18/01/2009 16:05

Pumpkin? Don't you like any kind of squash/gourd? See, when you cut those - so pretty on the inside. Aubergines - the colour of newspaper pulp. Well, not quite, but you get my drift.

duchesse - you, I think, must have a very messy kitchen with all that oil and drool.

OP posts:
Habbibu · 18/01/2009 16:07

Yes, but we don't work taxonomically on a daily basis, do we? Biologically such distinctions may be useful, but they don't serve much purpose otherwise (save pub quizzes and the like).

OP posts:
MusicLady · 18/01/2009 16:07

No - see pumpkin looks lovely, gourds are very pretty as decorations but have you ever eaten one? It is swine food only and makes me retch. Can't even do the halloween thing with the DCs as I have such a strong aversion to it!

MrsMattie · 18/01/2009 16:08

Aubergine is slimey and dull.

Mushrooms taste like worms and earth. Wrong.

Habbibu · 18/01/2009 16:11

Oh, no - love butternut squash, and make a divine pumpkin cake. Mushrooms are lovely lovely. This is about Aubergines, folks. Let's not get off-message, and slag off LOVELY THINGS...
