They ARE. They are so pretty on the outside, but them impossibly dreary on the inside, taste horrible, and upset my stomach. They're WRONG. Just wronng.

We're having Imam bayaldi tonight. I'm looking forward to it, even more now that I've read this thread.

Truckloads of tomato is what you need mask the taste of the aubergine!

bluebump · 18/01/2009 17:04

It's the texture I don't like.

AnnieLobeseder · 18/01/2009 17:05

Slimy, grey, tasteless. YUK!

Habbibu · 18/01/2009 17:09

I have sampled aubergine. That's how I know it's vile. And it really upsets my stomach.

I cook mine in the george foreman, no need for ten gallons of oil.

been even then YANBU - however they are cooked they come out with one of these delightful consitencies:

gritting

spongy

slimey

whats not to like.

LyraSilvertongue · 18/01/2009 17:29

But you need ten gallons of oil to give it flavour.

duchesse · 18/01/2009 17:47

You lot have made me hungry now, and I don't have a single bleddy aubergine in the house. Thanks a lot. My blood sugar levels are all over the place, this could turn nasty...

TaurielTest · 18/01/2009 18:18

YA possibly B a bit U, but I felt the same about them until I went to Sicily and tried alla norma: slice and dry-fry the hell out of the aubergines, add tomatoes and garlic, cook for a bit, add lots of chopped parsley and serve with spaghetti. Yummers.

sussexoldspot · 18/01/2009 19:09

I love aubergines. I love the feel of them, too. I get some right looks in Waitrose

littlebrownmouse · 18/01/2009 19:18

They remind me of when the DCs leave a wet sponge somewhere in the bathroom and it gets cold and soggy. Yuck. Maybe I just can't cook them.

pointydog · 18/01/2009 19:18

You see, I think I quite like aubergine because I have liked it when I have had it in an Indian restaurant. But the few times I've cooked it myself, it has been disappointing and sometimes pretty awful.

tinseltot · 18/01/2009 19:21

god i love aubergine so much..........

Roasted or grilled with salt. Just yum.

PoloPlayingMummy · 18/01/2009 19:31

Yeurch! They are truly the work of the devil. One of the few veggies/fruit I won't touch with a barge pole.

With all these threads, maybe an 'Aubergine' area will spring up on MN!

KTNoo · 18/01/2009 20:59

Used to like them. Until I ate some at a very poorly lit buffet. If you don't know what you're eating they could definitely be mistaken for some kind of offal. Was relieved to find out it was only aubergine actually.

womblingfree · 18/01/2009 22:09

Aubergine - disgusting
And marrow - does anyone actually eat it?

HuwEdwards · 18/01/2009 23:39

Nekabu, it's a bit of a faff, but lovely.

Get yer aubergine and slice, not thick, not thin, just medium and frin in Olive Oil until slightly toasty. Ste aside on kitchen paper.

Make a tomato sace (in fact this is the 1st step) by frying garlic and onion and adding a tin of toms, some V8 and basil/pesto/tom puree.

Peel 3 spuds, slice thinly, put in an oven dish, chuck on a quarter pint of milk, cover and stuff in oven for 50mins at 180.

Grate some mature cheddar cheese.

Now, layer, tom sauce, aubergine, spuds and cheese, twice, finishing with cheese. Then stick in oven at 200 degrees until toast on top.

See what you have to do to make aubergine taste good??!!

Freezes well too.

HuwEdwards · 18/01/2009 23:40

obv you don't 'frin' it, you fry it.

Bucharest · 19/01/2009 08:26

And what's even better, fry them first in a batter mixture......and eat hot with vinegar.....aubergine heaven.....

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 19/01/2009 08:29

They are FOUL. Soft tasteless mush on the inside and slimy and leathery and tough on the outside. Urrgh.

They also bounce quite high if you throw them on the floor, which is just not right.
