AIBU?

To think that some MNers don't really need to be as bloody rude as they are!

Why are some of them so rude?

I know it takes all sorts to make a world go around but really, is there any need for some people to be like they are?

I've come to the conclusion that they must spend all their time having to be nice to people in RL and find it a real strain so come on here and rip into total strangers with impunity for a bit of light relief .

Moist - you say 'I don't really care if someone turns up & says "fuck off you bunch of cunts". It's the far more subtle, nuanced stuff that gets me. Those posts written in perfectly constructed, polite English, that appear perfectly reasonable but have nasty undertones of superiority and venom...'

  • but just because someone prefers to avoid gratuitous swear words and put a bit of thought and composure into a post it doesn't/shouldn't imply there are any negative undertones at all ~ speaking for myself anyway, who I feeely admit may come across as old and square at times (plead guilty to the old anyway).

Okay, then I guess I'm being over-sensitive. I was called passive aggressive last night.

But, this whole idea is fascinating. In RL, what people would consider frank or dry wit or off beat, can be construed as rude or mocking or insane on line. Which brings me to ask, why aren't there emoticons like:

actively listening

Gawd poetmum, we couldn't have emoticons like that on Mumsnet, woman - they'd make everything much...erm...clearer and that's not our way. No, not at all. Those emoticons would be dangerous - they'd promote a spirit of understanding and empathy....oh, no, no, no.....wrong, just wrong!

I have no problem with expressing oneself and making a point in good English, I'd much rather read a well contructed sentence that a load of txt / hun speak. I also think a well placed profanity can be brilliantly illuminating.

I do have a problem with subtle undermining, loftiness and bitchiness.

It's a specific style of posting that I'm referring to.

We need a disclaimer emoticon poetmum. Something which says 'I have left out large parts of what is in my head for the sake of conciseness. Please take it as a given that I don't mean to be offensive or rude or petty or narrow minded or '

Yes Moist, 'well-placed' is the key. Written in place of logic - no.

mrs sean bean there wee those that used certain vernacular to be ambiguous deliberatly - so that something had an undertone for the person it was intended ( especially if there was history involved) but could be argued not to have been that way at all with a - how very dareyou suggest that !

yeah yeah.

one can use the English language superbly, and many many do in posts every single day - there is miles inbetween 'fuck off' and articulate and even they needn't be exclusive
