I am.. I know I am.. It's mean..

But I have compiled a list of high street stores that will go bust before 31st January and now feel compelled to see if I can shout HOUSE before anyone else...

Andyrobo - what is the square without Woolies?

SoupDragon · 31/12/2008 10:05

I don't think Hotel Chocolat is in a good position. Not financially particularly but they are completely unnecessary - maybe they'll reduce to internet only. I think established places like Thorntons may survive though.

paddingtonbear1 · 31/12/2008 10:14

even dh won't go in hotel chocolat - and he's a chocolate fiend! He says it's just too expensive.
woolworths did these bars he liked, and he's not seen them elsewhere. A couple of weeks ago he went in and must have bought all their remaining stock!!

jojosmaman · 31/12/2008 10:15

Morgan retail went ages ago (although you can get wholesale as their French side is still going... somehow!).

Thought about Faith as well, the shoe retailers, following the tracks of Dolcis/ Shelleys

mamaolivia · 31/12/2008 10:18

Went into a WH Smiths yesterday in a nearby town. Literally had to ask if they were still open (at 3pm) cos there was noone else there. Could practically see the tumblweed blowing around between the shelves...

notcitrus · 31/12/2008 13:37

Thought Hotel Chocolat was expanding and was net-only until recently?

I predict various mid-range shoe and clothes stores will go - Barratts, French Connection, principles etc.

ohdearwhatamess · 31/12/2008 13:45

Viyella? The one in our nearby city didn't open today.

Hotel Chocolat very insecurely financed (according to dh).

I'd be surprised at Tchibo being in trouble - one I walked by today was heaving.

MABS · 31/12/2008 14:22

mate in the trade said Karen Millen in trouble

SoupDragon · 31/12/2008 15:31

Morgan apparently collapsed in June 2006 but must have refinanced or something. They pulled out of the UK in March this year and filed for bankruptcy today (or yesterday)

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 31/12/2008 15:33

well according to this report Morgan has just gone.

TWINSETinapeartree · 31/12/2008 15:34

Has Kookai gone, always been overpriced in my opinion,

SoupDragon · 31/12/2008 15:46

Kookai went into administration in 2006 but, like Morgan, must have been rescued.

TWINSETinapeartree · 31/12/2008 15:48

I thought I had heard that but was not sure soupdragin.

TWINSETinapeartree · 31/12/2008 15:50

It is very worrying for jobs.

Clockface · 31/12/2008 15:59

I was thinking about this today, shopping in an eerily quiet town centre.

Boots...has anyone mentioned that?

Clinton Cards

TWINSETinapeartree · 31/12/2008 16:03

I think Boots has been mentioned, they always seem quite busy to me.

andyrobo237 · 31/12/2008 16:04

pinkjenny - the Square is nothin without Woolies - not even worth visiting anymore, unless you need a Sayers Sausage Roll (I dont like them but DH and DD do!!!)

DisastrousNuclearAccident · 31/12/2008 16:45

Wickes is another one I would worry for....and Staples.

There is a pretty big Staples near us and there are rarely more than 3 cars in the car park.

TheBlonde · 31/12/2008 16:45

Not too sure about Gap
Stores in the US were pretty quiet with duff stock - CEO stuck a msg on their website to reassure people buying gift cards

fizzbuzz · 31/12/2008 17:03

Gap always always empty near me. No one in on first day of sale.

Now Staples near us is usually heaving, but something like 60,000 students here.......

LittleChristmasCracker · 31/12/2008 17:04

L K Bennett is always empty

jojosmaman · 31/12/2008 17:11

Morgan as a UK company may have just gone but as I said in my earlier post Morgan Retail (ie the stand alone shops) collapsed ages ago and have only been running their franchise op but the bbc spin out the story as if its just happened. Their franchise/ wholesale side is very small and so it is no major collapse but I can't remember much being reported when their main business closed months ago, wasn't deemed newsworthy then did it?

jojosmaman · 31/12/2008 17:24

was not did
