I am.. I know I am.. It's mean..

But I have compiled a list of high street stores that will go bust before 31st January and now feel compelled to see if I can shout HOUSE before anyone else...

I think this is a very morbid thread

I think it's fair enough to speculate and discuss all the time with the employees and their families upfront in our minds

But not to make a silly game out of it. Shameful really

Flihgtattendant · 30/12/2008 09:23

I can see it's turned into a sensible discussion mainly though.

I can't bring myself to add suggestions, though I do have suspicions - it feels bad.

Clinton Cards
Jessops
BHS
HMV
Waterstones (will close many branches, if not full scale administration)
Whistles
Crew Clothing (may have name wrong - boaty chain, bit like Joules, but more expensive and with snooty staff)
Dorothy Perkins
Laura Ashley clothes (think home furnishings may stay)
Wickes
Focus

pc world

SoupDragon · 30/12/2008 09:32

A good number of the discount carpet companies.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 30/12/2008 09:33

SeaShells - perhaps fast food chains are doing well as people think rather than going out for a (pricey) pub lunch they'll just grab a quick burger??? Perhaps on the same line as someone mentioning places like Costa (they're just openend one near us and it's always heaving) do well as people spend £2 on a coffee rather than £50 on a haircut?

Flihgtattendant · 30/12/2008 09:34

Guys, these aren't just faceless companies - they are owned by real people with families.

And real people with families work there.

Can't you see how sad it is to play games with that?

morningpaper · 30/12/2008 09:35

FS I think it's okay to discuss it

It will have no bearing whatsoever on anything

morningpaper · 30/12/2008 09:36

FS meant to be FA

Flihgtattendant · 30/12/2008 09:36

Yes discuss by all means but playing bingo?

lalalonglegs · 30/12/2008 09:44

Surely some of the mobile phone shops have to go?

BlueCowNowIsLowingAndDCAwake · 30/12/2008 09:44

this feels like a conversation with ageing relatives - officers club going?
no dear they went years ago!
what did you say?
officers club? never heard of them!
no, was on bbc news.
Who?
When was that then?

and on and on. My bet would be all those sports shops that are always empty.

Says bluecow who hate shopping anyway...

ChestnutsRoastingonanOpenFlier · 30/12/2008 09:50

Thinking about the shops that always have either huge sales or are always pretty empty...

Superdrug (huge sale on christmas eve-never heard of that before with them)

The BodyShop - prices have gone up and always empty

Debenhams - they seem to constantly have upto 70% off and is like a jumble sale; would be a shame to see it go, though

ChestnutsRoastingonanOpenFlier · 30/12/2008 09:52

also lots of small businesses in the hair & beauty industry have opened up in recent years; I can't see all of them surviving in lean times

jojosmaman · 30/12/2008 09:55

FA I think you can clearly see that no-one is actually playing bingo, just discussing companies who may or may not go into admin in the new year.

Bluecow- it sounds like that because no-one really knows for sure who has definately gone from the high street. Actually the companies announce the administration which is then jumped on by the media to emphasise credit crunch headlines but hours later the same company announce they have been bought out and "saved" but this is rarely reported (as they are never really saved, just broken up or a few stores saved, a tactic normally used to avoid paying suppliers ). This is what has happened with Ethel Austin, mark one, Officers club and usc to name a few.

If anyone wants to keep up to date, this is probably the most accurate for retail industry news but is not as informative as the weekly mag for some reason?!!

morningpaper · 30/12/2008 09:57

I think the Body Shop went pear-shaped when it sold out "to L'Oreal"

No customer loyalty left now - shame

ChestnutsRoastingonanOpenFlier · 30/12/2008 10:00

it is a shame MP, I used to shop there fairly regularly.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 30/12/2008 10:01

when was it they sold out to L'oreal??? .

morningpaper · 30/12/2008 10:02

2 years ago faq

I think a lot of people used to shop there for 'ethical' reasons but that incentive sort of turned on its head

CharleeinChains · 30/12/2008 10:03

As long as Lush doesn't go anywhere im happy. Our is always packed so hopefully it wont.

nancy75 · 30/12/2008 10:05

yes, selling body shop made to l'oreal made the whole idea of the body shop abit pointless really, i have noticed that they have opened a few new stores recently, but that was obviously planned before all ofthis happened, their stores are always empty.

morningpaper · 30/12/2008 10:07

yes Nancy it seemed like a bonkers takeover

Now they are just judged on their products really, rather than their ethical stance - and their products are basically nicely packaged v expensive bog-standard slap

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 30/12/2008 10:08

ah - wasn't as long ago as I thought.

I used to love the Body Shop before I went out to Zim, when I came back I eagerly went in there and was rather disappointed with it.

wondered if they'd sold out when I was away (was 2 1/2yrs I was gone for so enough time for it to potentially change) and that's why it wasn't as good.

pantomimEDAMe · 30/12/2008 10:14

Karen Millen's part of a big retail group that I think also runs Oasis among a heap of other stores. The owners are Icelandic...

MarshaBrady · 30/12/2008 10:15

I wonder about Selfridges and Harvey Nics.

Haven't been into the former for five years or so as pretty much gone downhill, and the HN looked diabolically disappointing when I went during a sale. Hot and confusing.

People who can afford these places could Netaporter etc now days.
