I am.. I know I am.. It's mean..

But I have compiled a list of high street stores that will go bust before 31st January and now feel compelled to see if I can shout HOUSE before anyone else...

OP posts:
llareggub · 29/12/2008 21:55

Borders? Really? Wow. But then I guess their stores are just too big and carry too much stock to be viable. Stock control must be a nightmare. I love bookshops but Amazon is just so convenient.

frogs · 29/12/2008 21:56

Borders is an American company though. They're huge, and have massive shops in prime locations across central london. They might close down one or two less-profitable outlets, but I'd be really surprised if they went bust.

Cupofteaplease · 29/12/2008 21:56

PC World?

saffy202 · 29/12/2008 21:57

Yes I think WH Smiths will be safe this time. As well as the PO they have also just taken over a lot of hospital shops.

I'm thinking also that when the purse strings get tightened that things like magazines and newspapers get taken off the list, we can access news 24-7 on the net/TV now, so why buy one? I don't think it's just shops that we are going to see going bust.

jojosmaman · 29/12/2008 22:01

Any companies associated with Bauger the Icelandic group are in trouble for obvious reasons but there are also a few companies I know have had their credit reduced or taken away which is always a sign of bad news.

MKone have gone into admin twice now. JJB already in well publicised trouble.

The only certainty NOT to be in trouble at the moment is ASOS, seem to be doing very well indeed and no credit issues.

Prob with BHs is that its oldie customers are dying off and they are not replacing them and the busiest part of the shop is the cafe with old dears tucking into fish and chips! Also Mr Green spends half a day a week there compared with 5 days at Topshop, he has no real interest in it.

llareggub · 29/12/2008 22:02

Yes, I agree more magazines will go and possibly some daily newspapers. I wonder if any mumsnetters will buy the IoS again?

stephla · 29/12/2008 22:04

My money is on Land of Leather or maybe some other furniture shop. Anyone who took out their buy now/pay later option is very likely not to pay it back. And no one will be buying this year.

Maybe The White Shop? Even I would find it difficult to spend £70 for a plain white double sheet - even if they were in a 50% sale.

jojosmaman · 29/12/2008 22:04

usc rescued from administration by the way but will prob be just sold off anyway

girlylala0807 · 29/12/2008 22:04

Any Arcadia shops are apparently going to be fine,

Topshop and Topman make enough money to keep the whole company afloat.

xx

angelene · 29/12/2008 22:08

Will it be more the distribution side that goes in terms of media? The print side will move more to online and there will be more advertising online but the brands will still exist, but the distribution can't get anything out of this model?

ChasingSquirrels · 29/12/2008 22:09

Eve magazine has already gone

MilaMae · 29/12/2008 22:19

Mine are:-

Gap
WhSmiths
Clinton Cards
The Body Shop
Homebase and B&Q

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 29/12/2008 22:25

well article on the BBC the other day (about Adams going into admin) said

"The insolvency experts Begbies Traynor predicted only a week ago that up to 15 national retail chains would go bust by mid-January."

debzmb62 · 29/12/2008 22:31

got to be one of the big phone shops at some point won,t be carphonewarehouse they are doing good
heard phones 4 u is strugggling as are
comet
currys
homebase

angelene · 29/12/2008 22:32

Was Eve still published by BBC Worldwide or had they off-loaded it to some poor unfortunate other? I am quite scared about BBCWW tbh (I am ex-employee and have lots of friends there), it's so different out there now to how it was.

ChasingSquirrels · 29/12/2008 22:35

don't think Eve was BBC, it was similar to Red. I had 1/2 months sub left (tesco clubcard ) and got 4 issues of Grazia instead.

ClementFreudsGreatestAdmirer · 29/12/2008 22:37

electronics shops. Comet, currys, maplins.

simpsonsChristmasSpecial · 29/12/2008 22:40

15 national retail chains bust by mid Jan Scary times

Think it may be:
Superdrug
The Body Shop
Mark One
Currys
Homebase
One of the coffee shops ie Costa
JJB (our local one closed a month ago)
Littlewoods direct
BHS

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 29/12/2008 22:41

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Littlewoods direct can't go!!! I love my littlewoods account!!!

angelene · 29/12/2008 22:44

Eve was BBCW originally CS, I remember when it started and we thought there would be loads of glamorous women coming in to the office, we momentarily started smartening up a bit. Didn't last and we were back in scruffs within the week.

simpsonsChristmasSpecial · 29/12/2008 23:01

Also think:

Laura Ashley might be in trouble

and someone on another thread mentioned Blockbusters - and I think I agree they might go

SnowballsintheSky · 29/12/2008 23:03

I can't see the point of Blockbusters at all now. Twas different when things took an age to come to video but now it's on dvd the week after it hits the cinema and if you want to hire rather than buy you go to Lovefilm.

IllegallyBrunette · 29/12/2008 23:03

Mark One is already going.

I agree with those who said ELC, BHS, Laura Ashley and Homebase.
