yaNbu - mushy peas = yeurrgh, petit pois = lovely.

ScummyMarx · 01/12/2008 18:28

both are great in their right context.
petit pois with fish and chips are very wrong
mushy peas in a risotto would be wrong too

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 01/12/2008 18:28

What is the difference?

Petit pois (French) = Peas (English)

What are mushy peas?

ruddynorah · 01/12/2008 18:32

petit pois all the way!

mushy peas are big fat squashed peas that are a nasty lurid green mush colour.

Diege · 01/12/2008 18:32

Mushy peas every time

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 01/12/2008 18:32

petot pois, are small peas, are sweet tasting..... Mushy peas come in a tin, are made from much bigger peas, have a mushed pea sort of sauce with them.... nice with fish and chips but thats about it IMO!!

Ooo i love petits pois. I can eat bowlfuls of them at a time and dd has inheritted my love too. WHen I ask her what she wants for her dinner its not uncommon for her to ask for a bowl of peas

Countingthegreyhairs · 01/12/2008 18:36

ooh I love mushy peas with a bit of mint and a splodge of vinegar

Anna8888 · 01/12/2008 18:37

I like adore^ freshly podded peas. Nothing frozen, canned or anything else.

noonki · 01/12/2008 18:57

I heart peas
DH loves his mushy peas

thats what 200 miles north does to you

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 01/12/2008 19:00

well i'm a northerner, but much prefer the fresh taste of petit pois over the stodginess of mushy peas... also i'm from blackpool- the home of fish and chips, so you'd expect me to prefer mushy peas....

So 'mushy peas' are normal peas (= 'petits pois' in French) in a can?

I'm curious because there is no such thing as two different kinds of peas in the two countries I ever lived (not UK).

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 01/12/2008 19:08

Oh my... we have the lot- garden peas, petit pois and mushy peas...

I dont even think mushy peas are like normal peas, they taste a bit more starchy... no skin's normally... i may just have to post you a tin!! They are nice in their own right, but only with fish and chips IMO!!

Ok... nice large garden peas are best, followed by petit pois. You'll never catch me eating mushy peas!! (Not even with fish and chips!!)

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 01/12/2008 19:17

haha Kayz- i have Ses on my side!!!

mushy peas are vile (like green vomit!!!)

petit pois all the way

flowerybeanbag · 01/12/2008 19:32

Mushy peas are revolting.

womblingalong · 01/12/2008 19:35

no cote, mushy peas are marrowfat peas, more like a legume, whereas petit pois are little garden peas
