aibu? have bought lovely wooden advent calender and put in chox for my girls - inlaws just sent round two choc advent calenders with thir names written in choc, am annoyed because:

  1. i chose which calender we would have because thats what i wanted, we have a small house and i try and avoid clutter such as 3 advent calenders
  2. they have used the wrong name for my one dd, her middle name, they do this a lot , quite old and forgetful.
they do this all the time just buying stuff and sending it round and then i have to use it as dh looks for it. am expecting mad xmas tree next i think!aibu?

YABU.

TheNewsMongrel · 26/11/2008 21:45

I agree with hedgewitch. Advent calendars can be stacked with books and don't even look suspiciously like sweets. just have one when you feel like a tiny taste of chocolate. I did this last year with an angelina ballerina and a thomas calendar. My kids got more than enough chocolate. their poor mummy got hardly any. it seemed right and proper. redistribution.

choccyp1g · 26/11/2008 21:46

Give them the choccy ones on Dec 1st, say they can open and eat them all at once, so long as they share the chocs with you.
dump the cardboard tat.

pointydog · 26/11/2008 21:49

why not put little messages in your wooden one and let them eat the ils' chocolates?

They're just trying to be nice.

GrimmaTheNome · 26/11/2008 21:50

I'm sure the ILs meant well. Do your calendar properly, let your DDs enjoy the others however they want. the amount of choc in a shop-bought advent calendar isn't huge.

Hulababy · 26/11/2008 21:50

YABU. I am sure they mean no malice and are just trying to treat their grandchildren. Can they not keep them in their bedroom?

noonki · 26/11/2008 21:51

yabu - that is sweet of them.

TheSmallClanger · 26/11/2008 21:54

They probably didn't mean anything by it, but I can sort-of see your point. Can you take the chocolate out and share it out?

Actually, how often do they see their grandparents? If it's often, then could they have your calendar at home and a special granny-one at GPs? I appreciate it's too late for this year, but could it work next time?

piscesmoon · 26/11/2008 21:56

YABU-you can't avoid clutter with DCs.Grandparents are supposed to spoil.

bozza · 26/11/2008 21:59

I think YABU. My MIL buys them every year for my DC who are 7 and 4. I don't like choc advent calendars so buy them tasteful picture ones.

piscesmoon · 26/11/2008 22:02

If you don't want them to buy one you need to say so, tactfully, much earlier in the year. It is too late now.

Ohforfoxsake · 26/11/2008 22:04

Sorry to say YABU.

Bring on the mad Xmas tree! Bring on the tinsel!

FairLadyRantALot · 26/11/2008 22:13

Sorry yabu imho too...surely there isn't even a problem with this...let your Kids have both calendars....honestl just can't see the issue...and using clutter as an excuse is pretty sad...around x-mas all houses get a bit cluttered for a while....especially when you have Kids

smugmarried · 26/11/2008 22:47

My in-laws have never bought my kids an advent calender

bollockbrain · 26/11/2008 22:50

let them have both, whats wrong with that. choc in the morning and one later in the day.

very kind of the grands to do that for them i think

Alambil · 26/11/2008 22:53

aw how nice of them to think of your children.

Shame it's not appreciated

Tell them in time for next year so they don't waste their time and money

EachPeachPearMum · 27/11/2008 10:26

How can they get their grandchild's name wrong?
weird.
Let your DDs eat the chocolate, but use the one you got...that way they can still say 'Oh Granny- that chocolate was lovely, thank you.'
Maybe in a card signed in VERY big writing by DD

yabu

ds is beside himself with excitement at the ben10 advent calender he got from his gparents....lol at ben10advent

clayre · 27/11/2008 12:00

yabu my kids are getting 3 advent calenders, one from us and one form each set of grand parents

VictorianSqualor · 27/11/2008 12:05

I don't get why you're upset?
or how they could get your DD's name wrong

laweaselmys · 27/11/2008 12:09

I would be annoyed at getting her name wrong far more than the calender. Since you are annoyed about both, I think taking the chocolate out and just putting it in your calender is not a bad idea (you might want to wrap it in tin foil though)
