I know it sounds like a lot, but with a big mortgage and all the other usual bills we have very little disposable cash.

We don't have a cleaner or any other kind of help

Neither of us has had any new clothes for at least 18 months

We spend £100 a week on groceries, so hardly extravagant

We haven't been on holiday for 3 years

We do all DIY etc ourselves

We've been out twice this YEAR

I just don't know how we can cut back. It feels as though we are working so hard and yet we are always struggling.

It makes me really annoyed when I see comments (for example on that taxing over £150k thread) about the "super rich") - I guess on paper we look "rich" but it certainly doesn't feel like it!

Forgive me, £100pw on groceries, that sounds expensive? How many in your family? Honestly, not trying to pick bones, as I think everyone is feeling the pinch so do understand.

MakemineaGandT · 26/11/2008 21:19

do you think so? that's for 4 and includes all the nappies etc etc

TheGoat · 26/11/2008 21:19

i am sorry i tried really hard but i can't manage to muster any sympathy, what on earth do you spend it on. is your mortgage massive?

zebedee1 · 26/11/2008 21:20

I think you are being unreasonable! 100k is an awful lot of money, what on earth do you spend it all on?! Perhaps you need to get a less expensive house to reduce your mortgage and so giving you more disposable income.

cheeset · 26/11/2008 21:20

How much are nappies nowadays?

mabanana · 26/11/2008 21:20

Why do you have such a big mortgage? I have zero sympathy. What are you spending it all on??

ledodgy · 26/11/2008 21:21

I have a dp and 3 children I have just spent £66.56 on our weekly shop and this includes nappies, wipes and baby milk.

NCbirdy · 26/11/2008 21:21

Wasn't this done last month?

emkana · 26/11/2008 21:21

Well your money must be going somewhere. Our household income is way less than yours and we have bought clothes/been on holiday etc this year, so you're doing something wrong. Write it down to the last penny and then make changes.

janeite · 26/11/2008 21:22

We've been there and done this thread before. I think you will find that many posters will not sympathise much.

We survive perfectly well on less than half of the figure you say you are struggling on.

harpsichordcarrier · 26/11/2008 21:22

lots of money goes on running two cars I imagine.
also, are you putting money aside, into savings and pensions?
that woul dbe my guess

hester · 26/11/2008 21:22

Um, I'm sympathetic insofar as I think you're going to get a real slagging off on this thread. But I have to say, you sound like friends of mine who claim poverty because by the time they have paid mortgages on their big house and their holiday house, and the kids' school fees, there's no money left. The point is, you have a choice about how to spend your money, and you have chosen a big mortgage.

Some of us live in rabbit hutches and still have very little disposable cash. I think it's a bit unreasonable to expect us to feel your pain

BrownSuga · 26/11/2008 21:22

Make a spreadsheet, list incomings and EVERY outgoing, have a sheet for your bank acct, and sep sheets for your credit cards.

You'll soon see where it goes and be able to look at where you can cut back.

MakemineaGandT · 26/11/2008 21:22

thanks for trying Goat I guess I set myself up for that. Don't get me wrong, I don't think I'm hard done to or anything (I really do know how lucky I am) - it's more the attitude that we must be rolling around in cash scoffing caviar and jetting off on hols all the time that annoys me. God knows how much you'd need to earn for that sort of lifestyle!

(yes, mortgage is massive...)

Lizzylou · 26/11/2008 21:23

YOu'd think that if you earnt c£100k then you'd be more than comfortable.
You must either have a mammoth mortgage or lots of debt? Or both?

Sorry for the flaming you are about to receive OP - good luck.

jardefred · 26/11/2008 21:23

If £100k after tax yabu

If £100k before tax then yanbu

CharCharGabor · 26/11/2008 21:24

I would be more sympathetic but we manage on £14k. What do you spend it on? We eat well enough on £100 a month including nappies etc. and have bought a few clothes this year.

mabanana · 26/11/2008 21:24

You chose to take on a big mortgage!

chequersandroastedchestnuts · 26/11/2008 21:24

Gah!!

for info !!!

Bluestocking · 26/11/2008 21:24

Are you sure neither of you has a friend named Charlie? I can't believe that four of you whack your way through that much every month without at least some of it going up someone's nose.

jardefred · 26/11/2008 21:24

actually even after tax you are being a bit U.

Lilyloo · 26/11/2008 21:25

There was a massive thread on this recently.
We managed on less than £18,000 income last year and sill had a holiday with 3 dc and others do so on much less.
Do you have a massive mortgage to have no disposable income from 100k ?

WotsThatSkippy · 26/11/2008 21:25

You're comfortable. You have no real worries. Most people in this country are surviving on a lot less.

No sympathy from me.
