to be fed up about never having any money even though DH earns (just) over £100k?

I know it sounds like a lot, but with a big mortgage and all the other usual bills we have very little disposable cash.

We don't have a cleaner or any other kind of help

Neither of us has had any new clothes for at least 18 months

We spend £100 a week on groceries, so hardly extravagant

We haven't been on holiday for 3 years

We do all DIY etc ourselves

We've been out twice this YEAR

I just don't know how we can cut back. It feels as though we are working so hard and yet we are always struggling.

It makes me really annoyed when I see comments (for example on that taxing over £150k thread) about the "super rich") - I guess on paper we look "rich" but it certainly doesn't feel like it!

So when did you last go around the house looking for loose change to buy a loaf and some nappies?

If your mortgage is too big then downsize.

cheeset · 26/11/2008 21:35

morningpaper I love the word 'Numptie'

TheGoat · 26/11/2008 21:36

isn't really the time to be downsizing, the op would probably be worse off.

lovelysongbirdfliessouth · 26/11/2008 21:36

you are living beyond your means, you need to downsize or move

boogiewoogie · 26/11/2008 21:37

Resisting to post something sarcastic and runs off sniggering and since you did ask YABU!

Portofino · 26/11/2008 21:37

Ronaldinhio - she didn't mention working though - so presumably no need of 2k worth of child care.

Ronaldinhio · 26/11/2008 21:39

fair point porto

MakemineaGandT · 26/11/2008 21:40

yep, you're all right. Don't see "downsizing" as an option right now though as we'd lose all our savings (that went into buying house)

I wish I'd never started this - I've never been flamed before

I'm not going to post any more on this

I spend as though my husband earns over £100k (he doesn't) and we have no money!

Go figure!

Well Makemine, you only have to read a few threads on MN to realise what a hard time some people are having.....so it's one thing to ask for some money saving tips, and another to thrust your DH's good salary in people's faces and expect much sympathy!

morningpaper · 26/11/2008 21:42

Why would you lose all your savings? Unless your house is only worth 10% of what you bought it for

You are rubbish with money aren't you?

noonki · 26/11/2008 21:44

is your house bigger than you need or in an expensive area when you could have got more for your money a few miles down the road?

If yes then I have no sympathy. sorry.

and if kids at private school then definately no sympathy.

cheeset · 26/11/2008 21:44

MakemineaGandT - Do you think you have had a reality check? I did, it's horrible. I live in quite an affluent area and most of the time I feel like we just don't belong. It's just too expensive to live where we do.

As soon as the market changes (hopefully soon), we are on the move to downsize. Unbelievable that we only live in a 1950's 3 bed semi but sooo expensive. I know people live in lesser homes but I wanted to point out we aren't detached with ensuite and downstairs cloak. DYKWIM?

Lilyloo · 26/11/2008 21:44

I cannot imagine how much your mortgage would be and your bills to leave no change from 5k a month

mummynumber2 · 26/11/2008 21:45

Just out of interest how can you spend 2k a month on childcare?

pointydog · 26/11/2008 21:45

re getting little sympathy on mn. Is there a website where this sort of thread would get sympathy?

cheeset · 26/11/2008 21:46

Not lesser I mean SMALLER

Ronaldinhio · 26/11/2008 21:48

two children in ft nursery = 2k

milge · 26/11/2008 21:48

I would ask for this thread to be deleted, if I was you.
People in the top 1% of earners moaning about money get little no sympathy on MN.

Admitting to spending money on a big house, school fees and big cars is akin to admitting to eating grapes in supermarkets, starting a WOHM v SAHM,or Breast v Bottle thread. It is even worse than feeding your kids a Greggs sausage roll.

You will regret it, so please ask for it to go if you wish to remain sane.

beanieb · 26/11/2008 21:48

How big is your mortgage ?

could you downsize?

TheSmallClanger · 26/11/2008 21:48

Very little sympathy here.
There is a good reason why us Brits prefer not to discuss our salaries and suchlike.

NotanOtter · 26/11/2008 21:49

wondering how much MASSIVE mortgage is

we do have a truly magnanimously scary mortgage and the equity in the house ( what there was) is ebbing away

we are on a reasonable income but have 6 children and are constantly scrimping

i dont bemoan it but it is possible to earn good money but have whoppping out goings

our choice

NCbirdy · 26/11/2008 21:49

I have a larger family than you, I pay childcare and a big house (for my large family) yet my household income is less than 1/5th of your husbands (that is gross).

Bizzare but I think "I have no sympathy" doesn't even come close
