to put tights on my boys, under their trousers?

I've been taking them to watch the football this season, which we're all enjoying, but, so far, it hasn't been really cold and I suspect that if they're uncomfortably cold I'll get lots of winging and wining, which will make me More to the point, if they decide they don't want to go anymore, I'll have to stop too and I'll miss it

I have lots of years experience of wrapping up warm for football and I always wear tights under my jeans, which makes a world of difference. I was thinking of getting plain black girls tights for the boys (7 & 5 yrs) to wear.

DH says they'll be scarred for life if I make them wear girls' underwear, I say no-one will know, the boys don't even have to know they're meant for girls and it will be much cheaper than buying them boys thermals.

YANBU - your dh is being a bit silly lol! As you say, they won't know or care, and they will be nice and warm. My mum used to do this all the time with my little brothers.

JulesJules · 26/11/2008 09:59

YANBU - unless you put their underpants on over the tights

Niecie · 26/11/2008 10:00

If they don't mind then I would get them some. Nobody is going to see them after all. It's not like you are making them wear them to school when they have to change for PE.

Plain black ones would be a good alternative to thermals.

My only proviso is what would they do if they need a wee? Could they cope? Mine are still pulling their trousers down for a wee so would be OK but if they are only unzipping then it might be difficult.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 26/11/2008 10:00

My dp wears tights when it is cold, as does ds it just makes sense, nobody can see and really nobody should care.

mamadiva · 26/11/2008 10:02

YANBU.

I was going to do this with my 2.5YO DS because it's getting freezing and he is starting to want to walk rather than go in pram, but like you DP isn't too amused.

You get plain black and plain white ones from Next everywhere else seems to hav ethem with pink.

AnarchyAunt · 26/11/2008 10:03

YANBU.

Plain black/grey/green ones are in Woolies (be cheap at the moment )

onager · 26/11/2008 10:03

I've worked with men who wore tights in this country and it was considered no big deal. We worked outside in all weathers and often got soaking wet so you did all you could to keep warm.

amess · 26/11/2008 10:04

My own ds has been moaning about how cold his legs are, school trousers are too thin when it is cold. I have told him about thermals but don't know if they make them for young boys but he will not even think about them. Can't blame him could you imagine the stick he would get if anyone ever found out told him he could leave them off for PE days but imagine if they were doing an activity - he would get stick for life. So think if your ds/s are okay with it then yes but no otherwise.

used to do this with ds1 and 2 when they were younger. As you say, much cheaper than thermal leggings !

psychomum5 · 26/11/2008 10:04

we went to watch the footy last night (a huge group from the dance school went as the girls were doing a cheerleading dance before the match), and many of the brothers who went were all comparing their tights.

the coolest boys wear tights!

anonandlikeit · 26/11/2008 10:06

Just tell them they are boys tights, for football.
Most market traders wear tights in the winter, I can remember wearing tights & long johns under my trousers.

Its better to be warm, you really won't scar them for life.

BiancaCastafiore · 26/11/2008 10:06

YANBU.
I've always put ds in tights under his trousers and now he's 5 I've bought him some cheap dark coloured leggings to wear as long johns. He's got really skinny little legs and feels the cold quickly.

onthewarpath · 26/11/2008 10:06

I do not think YABU.

In shops like LIDL, they do often have tights in the winter, for boys as well. It might be a continetal thing, I remember my mum used to put tights to my brother in the winter and I have done the same to my sons, they were not of school age yet though. If he relly does not want to. have you tried longjohns?

onthewarpath · 26/11/2008 10:08

Sorry crossposre with Bianca

psychomum5 · 26/11/2008 10:08

have you thought about getting some in the team colours......would they wear them easier then???

moopymoo · 26/11/2008 10:08

Hmm as mum of two boys I know there would be war here if I suggested this. If all their mates are wearing them, well ok, but I wouldnt foist tights upon them if they were reluctant. Thermals and underwarmers here (though mine both play rugby and so are very tough )

My 2 dc hate tights but they will wear those ski underwear legging type things. I have a 10 year old ds and 9 year old dd. My h also wears long johns in winter when it gets really cold.
for you and dh

these are what my dc wear

I put tights on my baby boy because he yanks off the socks and I worry that a denim layer or fleecy joggers may not be enough when he's out of the house. They should make thermal leggings for boys more easily available for when they are older so it becomes normal. It's true what kama says I have friends who say its entirely normal in Switzerland too for young boys to wear tights.

Hulababy · 26/11/2008 10:15

There are a few articles from earlier this year which say that there has been a rise in men wearing tights, so they won't be alone.

If they don''t like the idea you could go for running/sport's leggings or tights under their trousers.

Aefondkiss · 26/11/2008 10:19

YANBU, you could always get long johns for them too, I prefer long johns (I got some from uniqlo), but tchibo were doing lovely ones for boys.

sameagain · 26/11/2008 10:20

Oh thanks admylin and in the right colours too! Not as expensive as I thought either and I could probably get away with getting one set between them. Now to find a way around the delivery charge........
