a couple of mums in the group had knitted dresses on and knee hign high heel boots.
not exactley preactical for playying with toddlers is it?

one of them had her hair all tonged curly and full make up.

i wonder how long it takes them to get ready/made up in the am.

samsonara · 11/11/2008 22:38

I'll tell you what hurt my eyes today, hf128129, one mum I get on well with wearing a very short denim rara skirt with a bolero and t-shirt, sheer tights and no jacket when it was quite cold...I was in jeans, boots, jumper and a mac and a wolly hat. Ok I was jealous probably because she was approx half my age and I have vague recollections of owning a short red woollen skirt Karen Millen skirt and not feeling the need to wrap up warm!

I t used to be the hoghlight of me and ds's week. It was an excellent opportunity to wear his new clothes

MsPontipine · 11/11/2008 22:56

oo highlight !

hf128219 · 11/11/2008 22:57

What got me yesterday was a slob mother asking me if she could go in front of me in a queue as she had the school run to tdo.

I ask you do I look like a lady of leisure?

wonderwoman73 · 11/11/2008 23:00

At the playgroup I take DD to you can id the mummies and the nannies so easily. The mummies are mostly in their 30s and all (apart from my mate and I) wear fleeces, jeans, trainers, no make up and have straggly hair pulled back into a ponytail with (steel yourselves ladies) a scrunchy . Meanwhile the 20 something nannies look fabulous in skinny jeans with boots, fitted tops, straightened hair etc.

samsonara · 11/11/2008 23:11

In RL she looked fine, that outfit probably wouldnt have suited everyone, esp not me, maybe that's why my eyes hurt, we see what we want to don't we? The other day, my dd were behaving badly in the playground at home time and all eyes were on me and dd rolling on the ground..and I smiled because I looked particularly yummy that day! If I had been in say joggers I would have been mortified! LOL (now that's a good reason to make efforts everyday!)

fin42 · 12/11/2008 00:10

I very rarely go out in the evening, I wear a uniform at work, my dh works away, so when I go to playgroup, asda, or even ds's swimming lesson I dress as nicely as I can.
I don't know what other people think of my taste or style but it makes me feel good and I enjoy making the effort just as I did when I was out in the evening regularly.

In honour of this thread today at playgroup i shall mostly be wearing, knee length skirt, purple tights, stripy top, biker boots, and if I see a mum in a ballgown with a beehive I will doff my hat with respect (did i mention the hat?)

Anna8888 · 12/11/2008 08:06

I think it is lovely that the mothers in question put the effort into looking nice for an outing to toddler group.

Life can quickly get very depressing if you have nothing to get dressed up for.

Nbg · 12/11/2008 08:21

I'd just like to ay that I am dressed up to the nines and going to toddler group today.
But I have been up since 6:30am and all the children were fed and watered by 7.

Its taken all of 2 mins to do my hair, 2 mins to slap on some concealer, blusher and eye makeup.

Alot of mums just don't get the chance to dress up like they used to, so why not just to go to a playgroup?
Its suprising what nice clothes and a bit of makeup can do to your mood.

TheNewsMonger · 12/11/2008 08:30

I have to take dc2 to a painting session today and we have been told to wear old clothes. I have old jeans covered in pink paint from when I painted dc1's bedroom and an old brown maternity cardigan (7 yrs old) and old manky trainers. I feel completely shit. I can't wait 'til tomorrow when I can wear my normal stuff.

What's the point of feeeling shite when you don't have to. I wouldn't put myself through this ordeal voluntarily.

ScottishMummy · 12/11/2008 08:33

spent 1st month exhausted in pj so it was a relief to feel myself again and dress nice, put on some make up

really cheered me up

TheNewsMonger · 12/11/2008 08:34

NBG I agree, I can 'do' my face in under 3 minutes. Make-up, 40 seconds, blusher in a stick: apply, blend, 20 seconds max! mascara, ok nearly a whole 1 minute! lipstick, 30 seconds.

HOW is that so hard?

Nbg · 12/11/2008 08:40

All I need is concealer to hide my "I've done ten rounds with Tyson" eyes so I don't scare the children at school and blusher for my ghostly face.

If you don't bother, all you end up doing is throwing on slobby clothes and having the attitude of "I don't give a crap".

I didn't bother with it all yesterday and I felt like crap when I left the house.
Great big spots on my face for everyone to see.

Not today though

TheNewsMonger · 12/11/2008 08:50

Good for you. I will turn up to painting session with my make-up right, to make up for the shabby clothes. It takes longer to peel an orange, and nobody would tell you not to bother doing that!

starbear · 12/11/2008 08:50

Pls feel sorry for me. I'm going to see the Head at a prospective school and as I have to go to work straight after I will have no make-up on and big black boots. The very white shirt should look impressive as I've had little old ladies compliment me on my white shirts.

Amani · 12/11/2008 08:50

Am mega speedy with putting my slap on too...
conceler, foundation, eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara, lippy and blusher in 5 mins flat. Got it down to an art....

sunnygirl1412 · 12/11/2008 10:18

I 'don't bother' because depression has left me so weary that getting up is sometimes a major achievement. I shower and blowdry my hair, and make sure I smell nice, and I like to wear clothes that make me feel happy (though I do often end up just flinging on whatever comes first to hand), but that's about all I can manage. Makeup and earrings is in the 'Too Difficult' box.

I probably do look like a slob and like I don't give a crap - but what I achieve is a real effort for me.

wittyusername · 12/11/2008 10:54

Am I the only one here that's happy to be casually dressed and not fussed about makeup?

mou · 12/11/2008 11:10

Don't often wear much make-up, but just love clothes, and re my earlier post it does help with my self esteem if I wear something nice. I understand what you are saying sg1412.
I certainly don't look at other mothers and think they haven't 'bothered' if any thing I just think they have other priorities. For all my love of them, they are just clothes.
One of the mothers I most admire at school has a casual dress sense but has battled cancer and I take my hat off to her and am humbled by her dignity.

Your post touched me sg and I hope things improve for you.
