a couple of mums in the group had knitted dresses on and knee hign high heel boots.
not exactley preactical for playying with toddlers is it?

one of them had her hair all tonged curly and full make up.

i wonder how long it takes them to get ready/made up in the am.

dresses coming back in fashion is the fashion god's gift to women. they are so easy to wear, you don't need to match them with anything, they are comfy and make you look feminine at a stroke.

if it wasn't for the need to gain access to the boobs (still bfeeding dd2) i would live in a dress all the time.

If people want to look like frumps that is fine. But I personally I am horrified at what some mothers wear - dull, boring way over their years type clothes, no colour co-ordination, dull hair just hanging down or scraped back.

Clothes actually looking like they could use a good wash. It's almost as if they take pride in it - 'Oh, I'm now a mummy, I must look dreadful and make no effort whatsover'

It doesn't have to be expensive either - fill your make-up bag for under a tenner and get yourself to a charity shop if necessary.

There are several mums at our playgroups who always look amazing and to be fair they always dress like that as I've seen them in the supermarket on non playgroup days. Talking to them I found that all of them have extra help any way from mums or family so they don't have to get up early or anything,or it's just their normal way of being.

Also I don't think it's right to be judgemental if yuu see a mum in scruffy , food smeared clothes, you are only getting a snapshot not the full picture and you don't know what they are going through, maybe they had to dash out to the shops.

It does annoy me when people slag of other people's dress sense. I love fashion and always knows what's in or out but don't always wear it, its just a line of interest not matter of life or death.

wittyusername · 11/11/2008 20:17

exactly, samsonara

itsMYmummy · 11/11/2008 20:19

Ohh i was done up like a pantomime dame this morning at mums and tots..... made me late arriving!

UnquietDad · 11/11/2008 20:22

The few times I went to toddler group I appreciated those who'd made the effort in dresses/skirts and boots.

I DO NOT GET jeans tucked into boots. Or those weird short tight skirt efforts you wear which would be really fit BUT for the fact that you have them worn....OVER JEANS. WTF??!

hf128219 · 11/11/2008 20:22

Golly, some mums round here must be having a bad day every day then.

wonderwoman73 · 11/11/2008 20:26

Well I've always bothered about how I look, in fact I managed to put on make up when my family came to visit me in hospital the day after my c-section (they were bringing cameras after all!). I just refuse to be a frump cos I've had a baby but if you're happy looking like something the dog dragged in then that's up to you. I guess it's probably a fabulous form of contraception too!

lumpsdumps · 11/11/2008 20:27

I wonder what you would think of me in my usual outfit of this:

That's what I wear to take my kids to school and I have full make up on and I get ready within half an hour, oh and I should actually add that I have 4 kids! Me thinks you are a tad jealous

ScottishMummy · 11/11/2008 20:43

maybe spend more time attending to yer kids than gawping enviously at the glammy-mammy

Knit dresses are really comfy and flattering. They skim your body without emphasising any lumps. I own a few myself and wear them with ... boots hahahaha.

ScottishMummy · 11/11/2008 20:58

clothes described as practical=frumpy lumpy dour.leather boots,knitted dress=vswish

FairLadyRantALot · 11/11/2008 21:01

Whenever I see lovely stylish mums I just get envious....I wish I had a dress sense, and wouldn't be so dull...
surely, as long as the mums in question are good mums , what is it to other people....
I mean, surely it doesn't matter what you do, you will be judged anyway....

princessmel · 11/11/2008 21:01

I make sure I look nice to go to toddler group Usually anyway. I don't want to appear like a flaky mum who can't manage to get herself together by 10am!

I wore black skinnys, my gorge boots and a top with a big bow on the front today.

wrinklytum · 11/11/2008 21:01

In answer to OP I don't think its odd at all.I wish I could emulate themI look like a bag of spanners most days.By the time I've got the dcs up and dressed, done the brekkies, sorted out packed lunch, got dd dressed with her AFO's on (Big battle)I have perhaps 15 mins,as dp takes a good hour to get up and have all his tablets and so on.I found my make up bag on a shelf the other day, unused for a couple of years I reckon.

shootfromthehip · 11/11/2008 21:08

I love how I OBVIOUSLY have 'help' because I can be arsed to make sure my clothes match and hair is done. I am utterly vain as I was before I had children and had to get out to work for 9am. I am capable of washing and dressing 2 kids and applying a full face of makeup by 9.30am. Wow. I whilst I don't wear skirts my skinny jeans and kneehighs are flexible enough to even let me help putting the soft play away under the stage at toddlers!

How rude- I wouldn't dream about starting a thread about those frumps who can't be arsed to get out of their joggy bottoms and fleeces. Am I supposed to be devoid of some maternal need to roll on the floor because I love a bit of Dior (many other good brands are available) lipgloss?

hf128219 · 11/11/2008 21:16

Exactly shootfromthehip.

I was tempted to start an AIBU thread:

'To think it's odd that some women want to look a mess 24/7'

shootfromthehip · 11/11/2008 21:22

Go for it hf- I'll be the first one on there to voice my disapproval for the great unwashed. No excuses will be accepted for looking like a tink .

FairLadyRantALot · 11/11/2008 21:27

oh dear...I better hide...
although, I shower everyday and wear clean clothes and do colour co-ordination...I am just rather boring....lol....

surely most people are in the middle...somewhere...........

wrinklytum · 11/11/2008 21:31

aH,ladies,I am now begging your help!I get ds school uniform out night before, and dd clothes, pack up the bags.I make ds sandwiches the morning he goes to school as nowt worse than soggy sarnies.I get up at 7AM,Make dp and I a cuppa.Run bath for dp.Get ds up and give him a drink.Wake dd up and give her her milk which takes a while due to her sn.Chivvy ds into gettiong dressed.Clean dd pooey bum (Big battle)get dd dressed.Manage to get her dressed with lots of wriggles and screeches.Take dcs downstairs, make their brekkies.Having supervised dd (POOR SWALLOW,LIABLE TO GAGGING/CHOKING) I load washer with clothes, start wash, make ds sarnies wash up.Then make beds.Dp still wallowing in bath...it takes him ages due to disability and needing muscles to get going.Wash up brekkie thing feed cats.Brush dcs teeth. Now dp will have emerged, its probably 8.30...I jump in shower and get dressed...15 mins max..How to look glam then??

shootfromthehip · 11/11/2008 21:40

Lipgloss and tidy, fashionable clothes- you are obviously super organised with routine, just incorporate that and you are on to a winner. Oh and tidy eyebrows- it is always a good feature (tongue firmly in cheek )

wrinklytum · 11/11/2008 21:46

Ah its the fashionable bit that gets me down.I am CLUELESS about fashion!Am 36,short dark hair, green eyes pale complexion, small stature size 10 5ft 3!My eyebrows are bordering on straggly I live in jeans, combats and jumpers in various sludge shades (Olives, greys, browns)I NEED defrumpyfying,on a budget, and tips for decent lipgloss

(I always insist on a good perfume, though!Without that my descent into frumpdom would be total!)

samsonara · 11/11/2008 22:12

shootfrom the hip, I didn't talk to you at my playgroup so wasn't refering to you about obviously getting help. The ladies at my playgroup do things like straightening their hair. Drop their children at their mums whilst they go to the shops or go out and they freely admit it. Obviously people can do what you are saying you do because the majority of parents with young children are well turned out and alot have to do all that and then go to work not playgroup. Those that can't and don't want to, well they are living their life not yours so don't see the point in a thread aimed at them.

hf128219 · 11/11/2008 22:22

Living their life yes - but it so hurts my eyes.
