a couple of mums in the group had knitted dresses on and knee hign high heel boots.
not exactley preactical for playying with toddlers is it?

one of them had her hair all tonged curly and full make up.

i wonder how long it takes them to get ready/made up in the am.

I also think you should just wear whatever you want, but I admit to being a bit at the dad who turned up at our toddler group wearing white trousers ... they weren't white when he went home again!

pagwatch · 11/11/2008 14:15

only if you are a clumsy oaf....

If you can't manage to have a child that you don't then step on perhaps you should reconsider parenthood

BoccaDellaVerita · 11/11/2008 14:16

nailpolish - it would need to be a skip, to accommodate all the make-up, hair brushes, anything requiring dry-cleaning, any handbag not commodious enough to hold two spare nappies and a packet of wet wipes .....

VersdeSociete · 11/11/2008 14:16

Surely this is a windup?

morningpaper · 11/11/2008 14:16

I must admit that my toddlers are often falling over when they wear my high heels, so you may be right

lulumama · 11/11/2008 14:16

i wore 6 inch wedge heels all summer and still ran after a toddler

i also attended a birth in a white linen tunic and escaped with no splashmarks

some of us are just naturally groomed

TheMadHouse · 11/11/2008 14:17

Dangerous?? PSML!
OK, they might be 'dangerous' if the toddlers are wearing them, but I think as a grown woman I can manage the risk.

I have just wet myself imagine my two boys in my shoes at toddlers. Bloody stress incontenece

nailpolish · 11/11/2008 14:18

yes and there would have to be a hairdresser on hand to give us all a sensible haircut as we were leaving the hospital

sneekychanger · 11/11/2008 14:18

lol at the dad in white trousers

Have just had totally brilliant idea for TV programme. Get Gok Wan (or similar) to toddler groups to make over all the mums / dads. It would be splendid

TotalChaos · 11/11/2008 14:19

I'm a clumsy oaf and wouldn't wear heels - but that was more because of concern about balancing when bumping buggy up and down steps (live in flat, don't drive), than because I was concerned about treading on DS .

I'm a proper scruff - but I think good on em to anyone who has the time, energy and desire to dress smartly for toddler group.

ohIdoliketobebesidethe · 11/11/2008 14:19

My MIL fell over on to tarmac when wearing wedge heels and carrying my the 1 yr old daughter.

morningpaper · 11/11/2008 14:20

My children just run into walls of their own volition

My footwear is largely irrelevant

LuubyLuu · 11/11/2008 14:21

YABU.

Who says I should I be bare-faced wearing jeans and a fleece every day just because I'm doing the school run and going to toddler group? I never dressed like this Before Children, so why start now?
It doesn't hamper my march to school or playing sleeping lions.

BoccaDellaVerita · 11/11/2008 14:21

.... and by the way, nail polish, that manicure will have to go. Nails cut short with the baby's scissors from now on.

fishie · 11/11/2008 14:22

what practical outfit for playing with toddlers were you wearing sneekychanger?

hf128219 · 11/11/2008 14:22

I find frumpy looking mums more sad to look at. It takes no time to spruce yourself up.

I am sitting here in knee high boots by the way - tucked into skinny jeans.

pamelat · 11/11/2008 14:23

actually just thinking at the toddler group this morning I had to remove my shoes to go in to the soft play area and it was remarked that my toe nails were painted!!

It was almost "how do you ever find the time?!" but I have 4 hours each evening where DD is fast asleep before I go to bed!

sneekychanger · 11/11/2008 14:23

yeap and britney did too

Actually I like wearing knitted dresses as they are very comfy. And have always worn knee high (not sure how relevent that bit is) high heel boots.

morningpaper · 11/11/2008 14:25

suitably attired for playing with toddlers

nailpolish · 11/11/2008 14:26

dresses are easy to wear
you just bung 'em on
takes more time to choose 2 items of clothing like trousers and top than 1 ie a dress

poppy34 · 11/11/2008 14:26

am not that glamorous but good luck to them - and totally agree that doign hair/putting some make up on and a bit of perfume is sometimes the only lift I get when having particularly bad day at home.

Am now more intrigued what kind of knitted dresses as that sounds nice and I am shallow...

TheGoat · 11/11/2008 14:33

everytime i come onto mumsnet i feel totally vindicated in my decision to forgo all toddler groups/softplay/large gatherings of tired mothers who hate each other.

roobarbschmoobarb · 11/11/2008 14:33

Maybe they're not, as others have said, getting dressed to the nines for toddler group specifically. Maybe that's how it always is for them. Fair dues.
I try to make a bit of an effort in public, thats just me and who i am. Its not the whole nine yards because i only do that on the rare occasion of a night out. Conversely the house-hag me can occasionally be seen nipping across the road to the village shop because she's been caught on the hop having run out of milk or bread, and i dont lose any sleep at being seen in my wild and woolly state.
My sister on the other hand is a full-make-up-and-colour-co-ordinated-clothing-before-any-departure-from-home person. Its just the way she is and because she's always done this and its routine for her, she always has time to present herself like that. Its second nature for her.
