YANBU. True vegetarians can't consume any of the three and I detest hearing people describe themselves as vegetarians when they eat chicken or fish.
It makes ordering more difficult for true vegetarians as restaurants often presume that they can offer fish as a vegetarian dish.

needmorecoffee · 10/11/2008 18:50

me too. I am veggie and don't eat any of the above. They are meat. Veggies don't eat meat.

Mercy · 10/11/2008 18:52

According to dh's family (in NZ) vegetarians do eat chicken.

I think quite a few people believe that vegetarians don't eat RED meat.

Dh started eating fish a couple of years ago (thank goodness - with apologies to the veggies)

edam · 10/11/2008 18:55

Makes me very cross. Means that restaurants get away with offering fish or chicken as 'vegetarian' alternatives and just confuses poor innocent omnivores who might invite me round for dinner!

2shoes · 10/11/2008 18:56

yanbu
my db and sil are bullshit evegies, drives me up the wall. so I have to cater to their whims, but db moans about ds being fussy!!!

falcon · 10/11/2008 18:56

Do chickens grow on trees in NZ?

Liffey · 10/11/2008 18:57

Who thinks that????!

Remember on the royles, when sheelagh (sue johnsson) is offering anthony's girlfriend the vegetarian a ham slice?! What, not even a ham slice? It's very thin!

spottyzebrahasthelurgy · 10/11/2008 18:57

esp as the person saying it was being quite snotty about it too.

oh no i could never eat meat, blah blah

lol falcon!

I just think some people (whole nations even) can't or maybe don't want to understand why someone would choose not to eat any meat for whatever reason.

onager · 10/11/2008 19:01

Depends why they are vegetarian I guess though there should be seperate names for it.
If somone thinks red meat is bad for the arteries or something that makes some sense, but if they think killing to eat is a sin then it's stupid to then eat chicken and fish.

CuppaTeaJanice · 10/11/2008 19:01

I find it strange that some veggies won't eat meat because the animal has to be killed (how many meals can you get from one cow?) but will quite happily shove a mouthful of prawns into their gob. 5-10 dead animals per bite!

choufleur · 10/11/2008 19:06

what about things that have animal products in but aren't meat (like jelly and some cheeses that contain rennet)?

onager · 10/11/2008 19:06

Didn't someone say on here once that they didn't believe in eating anything with a face? So cows are out, but prawns are in because their faces are not human enough to count

falcon · 10/11/2008 19:07

Vegetarians can't consume those either choufleur.

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 10/11/2008 19:10

I think (remembering back to school) there are 5 "types" of vegetarians.

Depends on what they eat as far as meat, eggs and dairy.

Lacto-ovo eat no meat but do eat eggs and dairy
Lacto each no meat and no eggs but do eat dairy
Ovo eat eggs but no dairy
pesco eat fish and dairy and eggs
Vegan eat no meat, no eggs and no dairy

Pesco vegetarianism has been condemmed by teh vegetarian society though.

falcon · 10/11/2008 19:11

I'm not surprised as it isn't a form of vegetarianism. Is it so difficult for people to say I eat fish but not meat rather than to say I'm a vegetarian?

cheerycherry · 10/11/2008 19:22

Vegetarian = eats no fish, flesh or foul

only1malteaser · 10/11/2008 19:24

I have been veggi for 20 years, don't eat meat, chicken, fish or eggs but do eat dairy, whilst pg with ds2 I craved prawns and HAD to have them so I did but I felt so guilty afterwards. The thought of it now just turns my stomach!

Boco · 10/11/2008 19:27

Do you mean people who are vegetarian but 'meet' chicken and fish? as in a social capacity, for a drink or to see a film or maybe a nice walk?, but don't actually eat them? Because if they turned around and ate them, they wouldn't be a vegetarian, but if they see them safely home afterwards then I think it's fine.

Cies · 10/11/2008 19:27

lol. I think people (or at least restaurants) in Spain believe ham to be a vegetable.

It is nigh on impossible to get a vegetable dish here without a liberal sprinkling of (IMO yummy) serrano ham.

Thank god I have had no vegetarian visitors, because it would severlylimit our choices of meals out.

pointydog · 10/11/2008 19:29

the meaning of vegetarian is perfectly clear. People aren't half daft

combustiblelemon · 10/11/2008 19:30

It's ok to eat fish 'cause they don't have any feelings

madrush · 10/11/2008 19:32

but what if it's a veggie chicken? .

I used to be a veggie because I thought (think) it's healthier, but now sometimes go for fish options in restaurants because veggie offering can soooo often be rubbish compared to what everyone else is having. Still veggie at home.

I say "I eat fish but no meat or chicken" it's not that hard!

BlueIsTheColour · 10/11/2008 19:39

I've been veggie for 18 years and still people ask in wonderous tones `well what do you eat?'

YANBU think people who eat meat or fish but claim to be veggie are daft - they are and they give us real veggies a bad name

IME the Spanish have always been very helpful when tey realise I am sans carne (an indulgent look and then lots of wonderful fersh veg and fruit, egg dishes etc).

Czechoslavakia in 1989 was the worst was there for 6 months over the winter - lived on pickled cucumbers and potatoes!!
