I don't eat meat - I dont like it. Haven't eaten for 22 years. Actually I have tried a bit of chicken - DD gave t to me to try. I tried it and really didn't like it. Not sure what it is about it - texture, tast, the lot - just not for me. Have never been a fan. Stopped eating meat at 13y.

I eat fish and shellfish - I like it and enjoy it.

I am not a vegetaria. However sometimes it is simpler to describe myself that way when having to put down food preferences, such as for weddings, balls and training courses, etc.

Othersideofthechannel · 10/11/2008 19:45

I used to be a vegetarian. After 15 yrs, I started eating fish and seafood.

I would never call myself a vegetarian but other people do.

gemmiegoatlegs · 10/11/2008 19:49

I do not eat meat. I eat fish rarely, and eggs and dairy. It is easier to tell people I am eating with that I am a vegetarian as then i know I will not be served meat or some godawful salmon thing.

SuperBunny · 10/11/2008 19:52

When I say that I am vegetarian, I always get asked, "But you eat chcken? No? Oh, but fish is ok, right? No? Oh, so what do you eat?"

And eating out here is a bit of a pain - I can usually only have Caesar Salad (which has anchovies in the sauce) or chips. Not very inspiring, really.

I went to chinatown a couple of weeks ago and even their 'vegetarian' dishes contained chicken and pork. I ate cake

PeaMcLean · 10/11/2008 19:58

I'm amazed how prolific it is for restaurants to think that veggie means chicken eating. My friend was in a pub recently and she'd checked in advance that they do veggie food. When she arrived she was offered chicken curry. "But there's no beef in it" said the waitress.

Ally90 · 10/11/2008 20:00

Best one I heard was a local wildlife rescuer...house stuffed with rescued animals...told me she was vegetarian then went on to say that she would eat chicken but not with bones in...que look of disgust and horror on her face

needmorecoffee · 10/11/2008 20:01

fish and chicken, those well known vegetables

nickytwotimes · 10/11/2008 20:02

People always offer tuna to veggies, don't they? Wtf?

PeaMcLean · 10/11/2008 20:03

LOL chicken with no bones in. Very floppy chickens!!!

littleoldme · 10/11/2008 20:06

I've got a friend who's veggie but only after breakfast; he enjoys his fry ups too much!

Ally90 · 10/11/2008 20:06

Less waste

CatIsSleepy · 10/11/2008 20:06

other people call me a veggie
I say I don't eat meat but I do eat fish

it's the industrial side of farming that bothers me, and is the reason I gave up meat in the first place
I also think I wasn't that keen on most kinds of meat anyway

OlderNotWiser · 10/11/2008 20:07

My nan was convinced that so long as it had less than 4 legs it was ok for me to eat...therefore chicken and definitely fish was fine! I used to have a few problems eating at her house!

Annthecat · 10/11/2008 20:08

I used to be a vegetarian but now eat fish.

I still often describe myself as vegetarian though just for ease to convey that I won't be eating meat, I will happily admit that I am not technically vegetarin however if challeneged on this, but find that the term pecestarian is not easily understood.

rookiemater · 10/11/2008 20:32

YANBU. Must admit it is one of my pet peeves when people describe themselves as veggies but they eat fish, but I can see your point Annthecat.

plantsitter · 10/11/2008 20:46

I never understand why this annoys people so much to be honest. People can eat what they want. 1 fish and 1 cow being eaten is worse than 1 fish being eaten and 1 cow being allowed to live. I'm a veggie who doesn't eat fish or chicken by the way.

falcon · 10/11/2008 20:50

It annoys people because it makes eating out considerably harder for true vegetarians.

I don't care how many chickens/fish/prawns they eat, I'm not a vegetarian, just that they please don't refer to themselves as vegetarians because they are not.

Hulababy · 10/11/2008 20:52

Have to admit that as a non-meat eater I have never found it difficult to eat out, even when sticking to veggie mmeals. I have never been offered "veggie" meals containing chicken or fish. Maybe I have been lucky.

BroccoliSpears · 10/11/2008 20:52

Nothing with a face .

SugarBird · 10/11/2008 20:55

Definitely irritates me when 'vegetarians' say they eat fish and/or chicken. A fish is not a vegetable and neither is a chicken! And I agree it makes life difficult for true veggies.

jennieflower · 10/11/2008 21:00

Oops! I'm a vegetarian that eats chicken and fish

I became a fully fledged real vegetarian when I was 10 years old but started to eat fish when I was in my teens, then about 5 years ago I started eating chicken, mainly through being bored of my diet.

I still refer to myself as a vegetarian if I'm eating as part of a group because it's just easier than explaining my choice of diet. I didn't realise it pissed other people off so much!

RainbowChaser · 10/11/2008 21:03

I too have never ever seen meals containing chicken e.g. chicken curry being offered as a veggie alternative. I find this hard to believe in this day and age TBH!

falcon · 10/11/2008 21:06

It does happen, I've noticed it and I'm not a vegetarian, from a friend being offered chicken in a restaurant after she explained she was vegetarian, to recently seeing a baked potato fast food outlet with a menu stating tuna as the vegetarian choice, complete with the 'V' symbol displayed next to it.

Lilybeto · 10/11/2008 21:07

It drives me mad when people say 'I'm a vegetarian but I eat fish.' Ahhhh, you are not a vegetarian, you are a pescatarian!

Also when people who are vegetarians eat jelly sweets and say 'but it doesn't look like meat'

MadamAnt · 10/11/2008 21:17

DH quite often describes himself as vegetarian even though he eats fish, as he can't be arsed to describe himself as a pescetarian. Also, we're fairly discerning wrt the fish we eat (generally don't eat any farmed fish) so it makes it makes it a bit more straightforward for anyone who's kind enough to be making us a meal! Otherwise the conversation would be,

DH: I'm a pescetarian

Mate: Pescewhat??

DH: I eat fish and vegetables but no meat.

Mate: Oh OK...shall we have salmon?

DH: That would be lovely!
