IMO yabu - no-one is perfect and I suspect all of us at some point in our life have acted in a crass/boorish manner (or maybe it's just me .

Andrew Sachs read the script before it was aired - remember that - and at the end of the day the BC producers could (should) have not aired the programme.

GrabShellDude · 30/10/2008 20:27

JR suspended on unpaid leave. Apparently works out to be £1.2m for the three months.

beaniescreamyb · 30/10/2008 20:27

yyaarrrghhhh - another one! I don't think I have the strength!

Talia22 · 30/10/2008 20:28

He's vastly overpaid. If the controller has resigned, then so should he.

But I don't know what the family of Jean Charles de Menendez must be making of all this .

hatrickortreat - is the report out?

pipintroll · 30/10/2008 20:33

Yes DandyLioness but haven't we all made mistakes either in public or private that we might bitterly regret?

I have to agree with morningpaper regarding the baying mob.

No-one batted an eyelid until the DM had their frontpage spread.

Now it is headline news fgs.

References to the Daily Mail always remind me of that song, think it's Kaiser chiefs - goes something like "we are the angry mob, we read the papers every day, we like what we like, we hate what we hate and we're all so easily swayed"

This is such a prime example of baying mob mentality, that's why it annoys me so much.

Hope someone knows what I mean, apologies if band or lyrics are wrong!!

Thing is, the BBC have Editorial Standards which in this case appear not to have been followed.

The production team is responsible for making sure the content is not offensive. Yes Brand and Ross were vile, and perhaps the BBC is silly to employ them in the first place, but once they have they(the BBC and production team) have the responsibility of making sure that what is broadcast does not break those standards.

wannaBe · 30/10/2008 20:42

yabu.

frankly the whole thing has been blown out of all proportion.

yes they were out of order.

But is this really worth the histeria the media have been whipping up about it? Worth the prime minister commenting on it? no it isn't.

At the time just two people complained about the programme.

The other 30000 are just jumping on the bandwagon. Those 30000 people will have to have made the effort to go and seak out the material that was so offensive - and to who exactly? One cannot be personally offended by something said to someone else about someone else who you don't even know. You may think it's in bad taste but offended?

And while it was obviously in pad taste, it's not as if it isn't true is it? Brand slept with his granddaughter - no maybe he shouldn't have made that public knowledge but she doesn't seem to have an issue selling her story to the sun now does she?

BellBookandCandle · 30/10/2008 20:44

Hattrickortreat - , my mistake I misread the newspaper article this morning - you are right they let him see the transcripts and then decided to air.

I do think it is being blown out of all proportion though - there are many worse things in the world that people should apologise for

wannaBe · 30/10/2008 20:46

dandylioness but who should he be apologising to publically?

The offence was caused to Andrew Sachs. He apologised to him.

Imo you cannot be personally offended by something like this. They were comments made about specific individuals. it's not as if he made racist/sexist/homophobic remarks - he made comments about one individual to another individual. The only people he is accountable to for that is those two individuals.

LittleBellaLugosi · 30/10/2008 20:47

oh no his remarks weren't sexist at all.

give me strength

kettlechip · 30/10/2008 20:47

wannaBe, totally agree.
I would love to know what JR and RB are saying about all of this in private, particularly regarding the granddaughter..

FeelingLucky · 30/10/2008 20:47

DandyLioness - who do you think gave Andrew Sachs' number to the two of them? And do you really think the producer just sat there and didn't egg the two numbskulls on to be 'edgy'?

It;s the producer's job to watch the back of presenters and make sure they don;t make mistakes, including making abusive calls to members of the public. He and the production team clearly failed here.

I can't believe there's anyone under 80 left in this country, who believes that Jonathan Ross is edgy.

Why do people think he's edgy? It's an absolute mystery.

I don't like JR so don't care either way.

RB however, I felt sorry for when watching his apology interview thing. I also found it very funny. I like him.

wannaBe · 30/10/2008 20:54

two people complained. that's all.

No-one else would have complained if the papers hadn't whipped up this frenzy.

The rest didn't complain because they were offended, they complained because they wanted to jump on the bandwagon.

It's more than likely the majority of the rest didn't even know this show existed until last sunday.

As for apologising to the granddaughter, that is IMO private and isn't something that needs to be followed by the media.

Similarly the granddaughter doesn't need to be boosting her career out of this by selling the story of how Russell Brand quoted lines from Falty towers during sex.

YABU the whole thing has been blown all out of proportion by the media frenzy, and the BBc are partly to blame anyway for letting it go to air, they should just give him a bollicking and move on.
