To think that people shouldn't use the *F* word on Mumsnet

Mulanmum · 29/10/2008 11:20

No doubt a bunch of smart alecs are going to tell me to F* off but ...

Why do some MNetters feel the need to use obscene language on here? Are they too inarticulate to express themselves without foul language? I started a thread on another topic, moving along nicely then a prolific poster told us to "all f* off". Why do that on a forum that is set up primarily to be friendly and supportive?

Just leave the foul language off MumsNet.

SheikYerBATi · 29/10/2008 18:53

The fact that I can say

mother fucking cock sucking knob jocking cunt

is the reason what I have stayed so long

I've bin 2 youneeversittee, innit?

Ashantai · 29/10/2008 19:00

I have joined loads of forums and this is the only one where you can literally say what you want without those "" coming up instead.

I was on an F1 forum talking about Lewis and his pussycatdoll girlie, and it actually changed it to "***catdoll". I was like WTF!
This is a forum mainly used by men and i cant even write that???

Sorry OP but a few mins after i joined this site, i realised what the conversations would be like and its the reason i stayed

Now if they would only give us the option to quote people so i could argue properly, it would be perfect!

SheikYerBATi · 29/10/2008 19:07

I went on a site once where the word bloody got censored.

I always wonder, what happens oin these sites if you say you live in S**thorpe?

SoupDragon · 29/10/2008 19:10

there was one forum which edited the word "snigger" to become "S[black person]"

Personally, I think swearing should never be used in thread titles but is Ok in a thread.

SheikYerBATi · 29/10/2008 19:12

Agree Soupy

I don't personally give a flying bollock about it in thread titles, but at least it's not there in your face, in blue, if you are of a sensitive disposition etc etc etc

SheikYerBATi · 29/10/2008 19:14

BTW, I am not from S[offensive-to-some word for female genitalia]thorpe, but if I was, I would be the person who'd put the cunt into it.

southeastalien · 29/10/2008 19:22

argh i hate swearing

differentWitch · 29/10/2008 19:25

lol sheiky.

Sazisi · 29/10/2008 19:27

hijack
Sheik, did you see you won a competition? Maybe they email you automatically when you win, but thought I'd mention it just incase you have to check-in

Habbibu · 29/10/2008 19:27

Mulan, I have to assume that your OP was deliberately provocative, allowing you (in your eyes) to take some spurious "mature moral high ground" over those who swear, as you haven't answered any posts which disputed your assertion that swearing was a sign of juvenility and inarticulacy.

As I said, there are words I can't stand. I HATE breastmilk being described as "booby-juice" - it makes me want to vomit. But should I be able to censor a group of adults using language they want to use in an informal setting? Of course I shouldn't - that would be ridiculous. So I just let those words pass over me - like water off a duck's back, in fact. Why can't you have the maturity to do the same? I pretty much stopped expecting the world to be exactly as I was and as I wanted it to be when I stopped being 15.

SheikYerBATi · 29/10/2008 19:29

Yes, got the e-mail last week - you won the same pwize didn;t you? My boys are very excited about going.

Mulanmum · 29/10/2008 19:30

Don't understand the aggression - what's wrong with you? Some of you are acting like a bunch of playground bullies, running around hurling insults and giggling at each other's idiotic behaviour.

Admittedly, it's only coming from a minority of posters - the usual suspects. I've been on the forum for over a year, only read a few topics (unlike some of you who can have NO life off this board judging by the amount of threads you babble on) and most people are articulate, amusing and considerate. That's what a "proper mnetter" is to me. And they've been wise enough not to weigh in on this thread - took one look at the obscenities you're spewing and moved on to proper debate/chat.

Carry on - at least it's keeping you away from your poor kids

OP posts:
SheikYerBATi · 29/10/2008 19:31

boak at "booby juice"

I hate "Baby dancing"

It's shagging, ffs

And "Auntie Flo" NONONONONONO

Why do we need to be coy about this shit? Why not just period?

(Or in my case "Monthly curse where I bleed profusely and turn into deranged psycho hose beast from hell")

Habbibu · 29/10/2008 19:31

Mulan - my dd is in bed. She's 2. I don't consider her a "poor kid". Even though her mother swears.

SheikYerBATi · 29/10/2008 19:34

Well, my kids are in bed. Unless I am meant to sleep in their rooms the same time as them. Miriam Stoppard didn't mention anything her book about this. I must have missed the chapter "Thou shalt spend every waking moment with thy offspring"

Where are your kids now, Mulanmum?

Mulanmum · 29/10/2008 19:34

Habbibu - The response of those who have replied with swear words validates my opinion that it's a sign of "juvenility and inarticulacy". Thanks!

OP posts:
Habbibu · 29/10/2008 19:40

No, it doesn't. you have no idea about the vocabulary and ability to articulate of the posters who swear. I've got a PhD in English, for example, and I use swearing as part of an informal register when it suits me. I didn't feel like swearing on this thread. So I didn't. Doesn't mean I won't swear elsewhere. And your refusal to discuss my points about censorship, nor the fact that you have no evidence for swearing as evidence of inability to articulate isn't really doing much to make me think you're any less juvenile than me or anyone else here.

SheikYerBATi · 29/10/2008 19:40

To be honest, mulanmum, what else did you expect?

This is s ite for parents which, to me, implies adaults

Now, I spend most of my day with my kids. After a day of rolling on the floor and pretending to be Mr. Potato Head from Toy Story (admittedly, the likeness is uncanny) I want to come on here and say fuckwankcuntybollocks

Would you rather I had no outlet for my navvy-like language? Should I swear at my children instead of risking offending you and your sensitive nature? I think not.

LaVie · 29/10/2008 19:45

"The sort of twee person who thinks swearing is in any way a sign of a lack of education or of a lack of verbal interest is just fucking lunatic. Or they say, 'It's not necessary.' As if that should stop one doing it. Things not being necessary is what makes life interesting."

Stephen Fry

SheikYerBATi · 29/10/2008 19:50

amen to that, LaVie

Carmenere · 29/10/2008 19:52

Yes but you are a bit of a nit-wit aren't you?
