why are Per Una clothes so annoying?

Had to walk hrough them to ge to the tights and they just really irritated me.
I know it's irrational..
is it those stripey cardies with big buttons that 50 yr olds wear because they think it makes them seem 30.
Or the stiched on bits like flowers and embroidered bits all over the place.
Or the waterfall cardies is nasty colours that think they're like jigsaw ten years ago
Or too much brown...
Or tring to make everytig special by saying it's italian or Roma or something when really it's hite...
didn't really have a good look honestly.....

God no, I would never show my skirt here! You would jump on it like a pack of hyenas!

DownyEmerald · 06/10/2008 14:36

When Per Una first arrived it was fine - simple things, elegant things, and I used to regularly get the occasional thing and thought it had replaced Next which I loved 20 years ago.

So when/why did Per Una change to this overembroidered hideousness? They may have the odd bit that's ok now, but there's no way I'm trawling through all that tat to find it!

darkpunk · 06/10/2008 14:37

can't stand the clothes in m&s..will always be for women over 50..but at least per una are different...some of it's ok.

DumbledoresGirl · 06/10/2008 14:38

Absolutely pals.

It amused me that you apologised for the things you had said about PU after I said I wore it. No need to apologise! I am not attacking anyone here and I do not feel anyone is attacking me. I just wanted to know why people hated it so much as I wasn't sure which offence I was commiting.

plumandolive · 06/10/2008 14:38

Szyslak- oh- but I think that's the whole point. People who but stuff at PU do want it to scream the label, because they think it's classy and posh- and... expensive- there fore must be good and they can afford it.
And Boden !!! Everyone who wears Boden is longing for it to scream Boden... that's why they but the hotchpotch_ ( let's face it- those patchwork cobbled loud things wouldn't look good on anyone unless they looked liked Kate moss) The only reason they werar it is because it loudly proclaims their lifestyle- Cornwall/Dordoigne/Tuscany/ and they can recognise each other in Rock.

I want to start a thread about Boden now.

"Johnny here"

Ah well there you go, I do have a couple of Boden things...

I don't think I really want them to scream 'Boden', as I'd feel really embarrassed - am on benefits and people would think I was cheating the system! But I liked the quality and if something's massively reduced it can be a bargain...

Saying that a lot of their stuff isn't great quality any more.

Szyslak · 06/10/2008 14:45

Plum - do you think?

I buy from all shops mentioned but try to choose very carefully so things are not obviously Boden/per uns/gap etc. So avoid anything spotty or too 'fun' looking, anything with frills/tassels ets and definitey anything with gap or next written on it (why do they do that??).

It's not like it's Chanel is it?

Now that would impress my friends in Tuscany.

I don't have any Boden (if that helps my standing here! ) but I have holidayed near Rock all my life. I pre-date the Hampstead brigade there by about 30 years!

fishie · 06/10/2008 14:53

the worst thing about pu is the disappointment. m&s can do perfectly lovely clothes when they want to and i think the quality is pretty good for the price. but i just don't want to wear shaggy tartan jackets. especially with a fringe. just imagine what else they could be doing with all that effort.

plumandolive · 06/10/2008 14:53

We go further down in Cornwall to a place called Prussia Cove... no public school boys or boden there

I told Mum yesterday the most irritating thing about Per Una is it's made by George.

SoMuchToBits · 06/10/2008 15:03

Well, I am going to come and join you DG, because I also own several Per Una items. I tend to avoid the very over-embellished stuff, because it is too fussy for me. I also avoid brown, because it doesn't suit me, but my sister (who has different colouring) has several brown items from there, and they look great on her.

Perhaps it's something to do with age, though, because I am also in my 40s (46) and really don't care whether I wear the same stuff as someone in their 60s, 20s or any other age, so long as I like the stuff and feel comfortable in it. Oh, and I have had several compliments while wearing some of my Per Una clothes (and not just from old grannies!)

Horton · 06/10/2008 15:07

I think some of the Per Una stuff looks a lot better on a person than hanging on a hanger IYSWIM. Whenever I try things on, I am pleasantly surprised by them. Also, some of the skirts with frills etc can look great teamed with something more neutral and plain but would look appalling with more frilly Per Una stuff. I don't personally own any because they have some bizarre idea that if you are a size 8 you are necessarily short and would not want a regular or even long skirt. I do not expose any part of my horrific legs to the world if at all possible.

The knitwear is beyond the pale, though. Why would anyone want their cardi to look like it's coming unravelled all the time?

DumbledoresGirl · 06/10/2008 15:08

Yay! Per Una Wearers Unite! (or PUWU for short).

No-one has mentioned the jeans yet? I used to cut the label out of M&S jeans when I was a teen so no-one would know my mother had bought them for me there.

Then in my 20s I wore nothing but Levi 501s.

In my 30s I was pregnant most of the time.

Now, having attempted to buy some Levis in my late 30s and been literally too embarrassed to ask the 16 year old sales assistant in the Levi shop for the next size up, I have discovered Per Una jeans and I wear them all the time. They are fantastic!

BouncingTurtle · 06/10/2008 15:12

I have a Per Una top, it's very nice, actually. Black satin with a flower print, kimona type wrap top.
Label on it said £29.99. I bought it for a £5 on ebay
But most of the Per Una stuff is Not My Cup of Tea...
