I probably am, but I was judging one such moron flicking through the 'naked'/'lesbian'/'soap star porn shot' or whatever the main focus of whichever magazine it was and I felt like saying why not buy Razzle and be a bit more upfront about it all.

I read Loaded, have done for 10-12 years or so, on and off like.. never bought nuts or the other ones tho so cant comment on them sorry.

Fatbob · 02/10/2008 11:00

Then again, I find women who read grief porn rather unpleasant.

and it's a growing market.... just look at this for instance...

I'll let young guys off, but anyone oveer the age of about 25 who buys these mags is a prize cock. Mind you, I used to have a secret 'Take A Break' habit ....

ForeverOptimistic · 02/10/2008 11:15

The men that buy these mags are usually ladymen anyway.

Fatbob · 02/10/2008 11:18

Im 32 and my OH reads them after me.

Can we be fixed?

fizzpops · 02/10/2008 11:19

My main problem with them is they seem to give formerly geeky/ nerdy blokes permission to turn into arrogant twats who don't even bother to conceal their adolescent sniggering over breasts.

A nice young man wouldn't read them (obsessively)

IfYouDidntLaughYoudCry · 02/10/2008 11:19

I don't think that someone is a twat just because they buy those particular magazines. It's just a bit of light reading/escapism for most men surely? Can't imagine my DP buying them now but when he was younger he sometimes did. Probably because it had some fairly funny articles about football and pics of attractive women.

Similar to some of the women's mags - granted they don't have the page 3 tone to them but they're hardly hard hitting journalism.

I bought Heat magazine for the first time in ages this wee, there was a free copy of a magazine I think was called 'closer' Anyway - the stories in there were shite and I think stuff like that should be banned TBH. I stoped buying Heat because I grew to hate the way they pick on people for being too fat, too thin, too hairy, too tanned etc.

Beanie, I don't know if young teenagers read Heat and the like but unless I have rose tinted specs on , I don't remember reading magazines with that kind of focus when I was younger. It's a shame that there seems to be so much more emphasis on looks, clothes and size.

They can't make their minds up. One week they're criticising celebrities for putting a few pounds on, the next they're criticising them for being too skinny.

And I've always wondered why magazines aimed at women have pictures of women on the front? Not the celeb ones but ones like Cosmo etc.

In fact, even if the lads mags are a bit crude, they have nothing but praise for the girls they feature!!

Twelvelegs · 02/10/2008 12:23

TBH, Ican't stand the whole 'celebrity'/famous for five minutes idiots crappy thing going on. Are there any magagzines celebrating acheivement nowadays?
Ifyoudidn't.... women aspire and men admire.

Twelvelegs - good phrase, very true.

I cannot stand it either. Are Sugar/Bliss/J17 still going? They used to depress me when all of the models had perfect hair and skin while I was covered in spots but at least they focussed on teen issues in a more helpful way.

A bit of celeb goss is always fun but people seem obsessed these days with 'get her look' or 'here's her diet plan'. I couldn't care less where Coleen Mclaughlin got her new handbag from and where I can find a much cheaper but still just as nice one on the high street.

mayorquimby · 02/10/2008 13:03

no worse than he heat/vogue/vanity fair magazines i sometimes see at my sister house.
i do think they are more a teenage boy type thing which is slightly worrying as the heat/vogue purchases seem to keep goiing later on in a womans life.
i used to buy fhm when i was about 15-18/19. now i might buy one if i had a trin journey or flight ahead of me and needed time killing.
don't think they are the worst things in the world by any stretch just they no longer hold any real appeal to me.now if i want proper fooball analysis i'll buy a footie mag, proper porn a porn mag, proper car reviews a car mag etc.

IfYouDidntLaughYoudCry · 02/10/2008 13:13

Yeah, I'll often buy Take A Break etc if I fancy something quite {shock} for a bit of escapism. It doesn't mean that I only read material and I am necessarily less intelligent than the person on the train next to me who is reading 'A Brief History of time'. Depends what mood I'm in.

Don't find the lads mags offensive in terms of their content. Would probably be better if they weren't placed so obviously in shops though.

beanieb · 02/10/2008 13:23

Don't get me wrong, I buy OK and Hello A LOT! What I can't stand are the 'shock' stories about couples or grossly fat people or people sleeping with their mother. Or stories about childen who saved their mother from dying, or who have some facial disfigurement. Any kind of story which uses words like 'tot', 'yob' etc.

IfYouDidntLaughYoudCry · 02/10/2008 13:28

See I like the shock stories. I got a bit addicted to them at one stage!

I like a bit of celeb goss but think it goes too far sometimes.

Fatbob · 02/10/2008 13:31

so anyone admit to reading grief porn then like they stack from floor to ceiling in ASDA and WHsmiths?

books like, "please daddy no" and " sold for ten fags" etc

IfYouDidntLaughYoudCry · 02/10/2008 13:33

No I don't read those, Fatbob. What's with the recent trend for those?

Fatbob · 02/10/2008 13:36

have a look at this, i took it in ASDA the other week.

i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm168/BoB2oo9/ffs.jpg

policywonk · 02/10/2008 13:37

YANBU. If I found out a potential partner read this shite I'd run a mile. And I think supermarkets/newsagents should keep them on the top shelf, not at bloody eye-level.

Upwind · 02/10/2008 13:42

fatbob - that is a great photograph, those misery memoirs give me the creeps

One of my closest friends in real life is addicted to them. I think it has made her paranoid and fearful - she has started to suggest that the most horrible and convoluted things might happen and to suspect that people around her are evil.

Heat and Cosmopolitan etc are as bad as Nuts and Loaded.

carmenelectra · 02/10/2008 13:43

I think they are completely different from porn. They are just attractive women scantily dressed. Would mind one bit if my dp bought them. Occasionally he has brought one home from work and i must admit i like looking at pretty women in mags myself. Makes me jealous, but i like it! I think they are mainly bought by blokes in late teens. My dp wouldnt waste his money. Dont think they are offensive at all though.

IfYouDidntLaughYoudCry · 02/10/2008 13:45

WHOAH! What the hell? I knew there were lots but didn't realise how many. Well spotted!

Think I'd be emotionally exhausted after reading just one of those, very upsetting.
