Well I DO declare!! just looked it up on my ipod thingy for SHA..and it wasn't there.....gulp.....well, 34 years IS a long time to remember this stuff for.....and in any case, driving = sexy is still rubbish.

okay, skipping from page 1 to 33. Not being in the UK but being from the US and having lived in other countries...I guess I just don't understand why driving is such a MAN issue. I would think both men and women should learn to drive. That as well as learn to fix things around the house or mow the grass, apply for and hold a job, keep an accurate bank account, do taxes or at least find someone who is a professional for financial purposes and for jobs like plumbing or electrical that require a professional.
Why become dependent on someone else? Who would want to? I can see possibly losing a license because of illness (blindness) or the ability to drive due to muscle control but I don't get the implication that men have to be one thing and women something else. They should both be raised to understand science and math as well as etiquette and manners too. Just my opinion. Sorry if this has already been stated as this is a rather long thread.

wehaveallbeenthere · 05/10/2008 23:41

MadBad, you are right...Queen rocks but only when Freddie was still around. I still haven't found anyone that has his range.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 05/10/2008 23:44

Oh dear. This is turning into a Queen appreciation thread. They were my favourite group of the time - I know where I was when John Lennon was shot because I was watching Queen at Wembley - but I hadn't really thought about them for years ... until this thread prompted thoughts of IILWMC.

wehaveallbeenthere · 05/10/2008 23:51

Yes, same here. I was 18 when I met a guy working for Consolidated Productions out of California. He was a driver for several popular musicians of that time.
Freddie had both men and women that he would "love" and then cast off to the roadies. I did a double take when it was announced that he fell to AIDS.
Did you know he never had dental work because he believed it would effect his singing voice? Such a loss. I hate that so many talented musical genius' die so young.
The music these days isn't anything but borrowed genius. I guess I'm just old and spoiled on R&R but that's how I roll.

wehaveallbeenthere · 05/10/2008 23:53

Anyway, being a "man" has nothing to do with driving or not.

Klaw · 05/10/2008 23:53

returns to rl with a heavy thud!

Night at the Opera IS the best album in the world

Until I met dp at 32 no previous serious boyfriend, or indeed husband, had a car. Some may have had their license but none had cars.

I then learned to drive at DP's encouragement, not that he ever took me out for practise either, I PAID for every single lesson!

Interestingly, ex dh has since learned to drive also.

So, I would think that I am not so shallow as to dismiss a chap because he can't drive but having tried to date a chap barely my own height I am so shallow as to only consider dating a guy who fits my minimum height rule of 6'2".

wehaveallbeenthere · 06/10/2008 00:00

lol, I don't base my interests in height either. To quote someone that was "blessed" with the state of midget ..."everyone is the same height in bed".
The man I dated, the driver was 6'7". He is the tallest I have ever dated. The shortest I believe was 5'2". He became an officer in the Navy and captained a nuclear submarine. I am 2 inches taller.
I've met men that could cook (much better than I) and that could do laundry etc. I just look for that which makes my heart flutter!
My older brothers had cars...classic muscle cars and I picked up a few pointers along the way watching them and having crushes on their friends. I still crave an emerald green '57 Chevy but that is another story.

wehaveallbeenthere · 06/10/2008 00:04

I learned to drive in HS. They still had drivers education when I was in school. I learned to drive a stick in Germany...had a license there and again I got a license in Okinawa. The rules change. I refuse to drive in New York though...as they are crazy there.
There is a new movie out called "Nick & Nora's Ultimate Playlist" that has a cute background. They looked for a Yugo and found only 3 in the state of New York. They had a mechanic on set every day but only two they could get to run for filming. Also the actor (his name escapes me) that played the lead "Nick" had to learn to drive a stick in New York and said it was really scary.

ThreadieKrueger · 06/10/2008 06:42

Oh, we're on to Queen. So the MN men can discuss bicycle-driving and the attractiveness of fat-bottomed girls.

Go see my sorry thread again

Am off to school run, back later.

Apologies for hijack.

MsSparkle · 06/10/2008 08:39

"And where will 'all you lot wot rely on cars' be when the War of The Worlds happens, and all the cars stop working, eh?"

If that happens then it will effect EVERYBODY whether you drive or not. Every single person in this country relys on motor vehicles, how do suppose the products get on the shelves in the shops? They don't get there themselves. We would ALL be screwed.

onebatmotherofNormanBates · 06/10/2008 09:37

also, as far as I understand it, learning to drive doesn't actually affect ones ability to walk.Come the apocalypse, that's what I'll be doing..

ThreadieKrueger · 06/10/2008 09:39

Nice halloween name onebat. Course, if we didn't drive we would be safe from motels.

IorekByrnison · 06/10/2008 09:44

I agree with Unquiet Dad. The advantages of car use are vastly overestimated, and the disadvantages (pollution, expense, 3000 deaths per year in the UK as well as many more non-fatal but disabling accidents) tolerated and underplayed to an astonishing degree.

ThreadieKrueger · 06/10/2008 09:45

Of course, but you can find something attractive even if it is bad. I find the imagery of smoking quite attractive (on screen, not actually in same rooom as me). But smoking is bad.

CarWreckByrnison · 06/10/2008 09:49

Yes but everyone knows smoking is bad so I feel no urge to bang on about it. Everyone pretends that driving is just great.

CarWreckByrnison · 06/10/2008 10:00

And smoking is much less bad than driving. It's pretty hard to kill anyone but yourself by smoking.

3000!

onebatmotherofNormanBates · 06/10/2008 10:01

So CarWreck are you saying that you find men who can't drive more attractive than those who do?

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 06/10/2008 10:09

We were briefly on to Queen because their song I'm In Love With My Car is the first car-related song that came into my mind and its theme seemed germane to the thread. But cod is (as ever) right; we need a Venn diagram of all other modes of transport as depicted in their oeuvre.

As for me, I think the benefits of car ownership are over-rated, but I do welcome the added choice which being able to drive offers. I love public tranport but sometimes opt for the car for reasons of comfort and speed (ie no half hour wait at the bus stop). It's fine by me if people opt not to drive or own a car, as long as

CarWreckByrnison · 06/10/2008 10:17

No, onebat . My point wasn't really about attractiveness, although I often feel that men who don't drive are somewhat intriguing as it suggests that they have been busy with more interesting things. I'm just trying to draw everyone's attention to how fucking dangerous it is because it seems to go almost entirely unrecognised.

ThreadieKrueger · 06/10/2008 10:21

Is this cool?

Swedes · 06/10/2008 10:24

Lucien Freud not being able to drive is one thing. Midlle management Martin not being able to drive is something else entirely.
