Y'see.
This is why otherwise sane people fancy Jeremy Clarkson.
He can drive.

Cammelia · 01/10/2008 20:01

Men. Cars.
Women. Cars.

Driving vital life skill imo for both genders.

UQD, now I know why we don't get on.

UnquietDad · 01/10/2008 20:05

Do we not get on? I hadn't noticed. I'm sure it's a daft thing not to get on with someone about. But a life skill? Pleeeeeeeeease.

UnquietDad · 01/10/2008 20:06

mumblechum - well, you're half right, and I'm not telling you which half.

UnquietDad · 01/10/2008 20:08

Mrs GG - no Yorkshire accent (the very thought!) and no more chips than anyone else on here...

Pan · 01/10/2008 20:13

and cheers for the - woman in short skirt working away in the kitchen - malarkey, UQD. Some wistful thoughts there.

Cammelia · 01/10/2008 20:22

Life skill.

Glad dh could drive me to hospital when in labour. (Ambulances better used elsewhere and who fancies a taxi - if they'd even let you get in?)

Glad I'm able to drive dd to school 9 miles away.

Glad we could drive to remote parts of Europe for holidays.

etc etc etc

Swedes · 01/10/2008 20:43

Threadie - No, not teasing. Good at languages = hopeless spatial awareness

Cappuccino · 01/10/2008 21:11

at UQD

both my dh and I have Yorkshire accents

you have just set fire to all your brownie points

onebatmother · 01/10/2008 21:20

mine has yorkshire accent and HER-YUGE facial hair! And chips! don't talk to me about chips. If he could read, he'd read the Guardian.

I'm too scared to face Swedes.

IorekByrnison · 01/10/2008 21:58

YANBU. I feel the same way about men who don't know any latin. Driving is shit though.

Threadworrm, I love your new West Country accent.

UnquietDad · 01/10/2008 22:02

Nothing wrong with a Yorkshire accent, I just find it funny that people think I have one!!

My brother got all the car genes. He is a driving examiner. But "Quis custodet ipsos custodies"?

onebatmother · 01/10/2008 22:04

That's interestign Iorek (my dearie) - I was reading it as a kind of Scandiwegian-Germano-gutteral-no-daylight-till-Aprril heerre kind off vorrm.

Threadworrm · 01/10/2008 22:04

Arr, Iorek. My West Country Nana would apparently get out of her car, as a young woman, and hail down a passing male to park it for her. My dear old grandfather drove steam trains.

Threadworrm · 01/10/2008 22:05

I baint no koind of Gerrrrman Onebat.

onebatmother · 01/10/2008 22:06

UQD. that is the annoying latin thing that all non-driving non-latin-knowing people know!

noddyholder · 01/10/2008 22:09

It is a useful but not vital life skill surely.

jaz2 · 01/10/2008 22:29

My DH can't drive - but it really doesn't bother me anymore. We live in London, and on the occassion we go outside London I drive - or we get cheapo rail tickets or taxis. It's mainly other people who make a big issue of the fact that he can't drive.

I guess he may need to start driving when DS needs to be ferried around, but I'm not sure I would trust his road sense even if he did manage to pass his test: I've seen him play the occassional computer driving game - and it was food for thought (I didn't realise verges / trees were meant to be driven on/crashed into).

I don't fancy the idea of a taxi trip to hospital when DC2 arrives: but that's the only issue I can think of.

Pan · 01/10/2008 23:17

yes noddy, I think so too..A life skill is something such as empathy, an ability to understand, recognising one's own character, ability to change etc. Driving is just a simple mechanical process. Kind of thing.

MamaG · 01/10/2008 23:20

My DH can't drive

He's veeerrrreeee sexy ACTUALLY

I don't CARE that he can't drive - we were v young when we met and he'd failed a test. I'm a TERRIBLE passenger and alwasy discouraged him from learning [selfish]

Only time I wish he could drive is when I'm pregnant

So yes, YABU you ponce

onebatmother · 01/10/2008 23:22

Okay. I recognize my own character as someone who is more in control of my own destiny if I can make a car go back and forth.

Pan, with this emotional intelligence you are really spoiling us.

noddyholder · 01/10/2008 23:23

yes someone who drives but treats you like shit is pointless.Driving is like any other learned skill some are better than others at it and some just have no desire to master it.

Pan · 01/10/2008 23:28

Easily done, batty, easily done.

Swedes · 01/10/2008 23:56

I know it's bad but I'd rather be treated badly in a car than be treated like a princess on a bus.

Pan · 01/10/2008 23:57

Not 'bad' Swedes..just a bit tasteless.
