To be slightly embarrassed because I know the lady who will give me a smear?

I am having a long overdue smear tomorrow. The GP who will do it is known to me, but I don't know her terribly well, as it is my dh who is very friendly with hers. To add insult to injury they are coming to dinner on Friday! Should I feel embarrassed or will she have seen it all before?

she will be fine, but do they not have a nurse at the practice who can do it instead? We have a practice nurse for all those types of things.

But actually I think I'd find this rather excruciating. You poor thing.

Do NOT serve oysters at supper.

From what I know, they don't really care about this. (At least according to a nurse I know who does smears at the practice I use - she doesn't want to give needles to my kids, because she knows them socially, but she'll happily do my smear.)

But if you (understandably) do, then why not ask to use a different GP in the practice?

I've had fine smears by male gynaes. The nicest gynae (or maybe he was a GP? but he did smears) was a guy who had some sort of ... he had a limb development problem, one arm, I think it was, was ... I think his mom had taken thalidomide.

I saw him ahead of time, thought 'OMG, I hope he's not my doc' .

And he was, and he was lovely.

No, it'd have to be someone I didn't know socially. God I even felt a bit awkward cos I knew the woman who waxed my eyebrows slightly from school

it's like looking at feet for these people.

they've seen it all before - you aren't the first and won't be the last.

people are so precious about their bits.

it's just part of the job for them. i lived in a trauma doc for 2 years and he saw all kinds of things far worse than a smear test.

at the women's clinic where i worked, the docs and nurses all did each others' smears.

my smear is done by a very good friend of mine - shes lovely she just takes the smear and thats it - i think its nicer to have someone you know do it tbh.

Yep I'm precious about my bits all right Mind you 3 dc put paid to quite a bit of it. At one time (post brths) I often wondered if there was anyone within a 25 mile radius who hadn't seen them

Right, so now I'm getting you about the oysters, I thought you meant not to eat them tonight otherwise there may be a nasty aroma around the fanjo area come morning.

it doesn't matter - go and get it done - in 2weeks i have to have abnormal cells removed (have been having 6mthly smears for 3 and a half years now because of abnormalities) - even through my last pregnancy. It really wouldn't bother me as long as it means i don't get cervical cancer.

I admit Expat that I am not normally precious about these things, but for some reason this time, I feel kind of queer about it. Must be old age. What if she let slip something when having had a sherbet or two?

she won't. she'll forget about it after you leave probably won't even remember it. and as a professional would never say anything about it.

as long as it gets done and done well and i don't get cervical cancer, i wouldn't care if Quasimodo were down there.

You are right RedHead, sorry to hear you are having to have treatment, sometimes it is easy to forget the reasons why you should be having it done rather than just ticking it off your to-do list.

here I am!! this happened to me and I was a bit embarrassed - she asked me if I was ok with her doing it...o(ur DS's have palyed together too!!)

I just thought - well she's professional and maybe she'll take even more care!! she did - it was one of the easiest smears ever! We then talked fundraisign for teh PTA!!!
