to think doing coke and breastfeeding are incompatible?

Well, I know I'm not being unreasonable really but what are your thoughts? Was at a party recently and two mothers who are breastfeeding were taking coke. One says she is a 'bit naughty' to be smoking spliffs in front of her children but at least she and her husband only do it in the garden. One mum did say she is breastfeeding mainly to lose weight. Nice.

I wasn't a saint back in the day but now I have children - no way - and while feeding?! Still I do have too much wine sometimes and think that is sort of OK. Where do your draw your lines (you know the kind) about recreation of the drug kind?

Also cocaine effects people in different ways so not all people are wide awake on it.

i think that odd couple of units is ok when DC's are in bed, should def make sure there is at least 1 person there who is fit to drive ICE but noone should get legless with DC's in the house.

If your DC's aren't there for a couple of days there is nothing to stop you having fun.

But the point of this tread is that its not good to drink alot/take ANY kind of illegal drugs when BF

cupsoftea · 18/09/2008 14:01

Cluedo is a great game.

Bobbiewickham · 18/09/2008 14:01

I am perfectly capable of going out and having a laugh.

And I don't need to hoover a load of Colombian marching powder up my nose to do it.

In fact, the very idea of hovering over a table/toilet cistern/back of a cd case/whatever with a rolled up twenty pound note up my hooter is grim, sorry.

Oliveoil · 18/09/2008 14:02

well personally I have led an absolutley charmed life, full of excitement and events you can only imagine

then I had children so now I stay in and look at the wall

if only I still did drugs, my life would be complete

tamarto · 18/09/2008 14:02

Cupsoftea - They should and most do but pretend otherwise, it's funny how peoples perceptions can change when it's written infront of them in black and white.

imnotadmittingthisinmyownname · 18/09/2008 14:02

Not as good as scrabble IMO

EffiePerine · 18/09/2008 14:03

actually the risks of alcohol and bfing are minimal

not much gets into your breastmilk

theoretically you can get rat-arsed and breastfeed, but obv there are other side-effects when you are looking after a baby - they just aren't anything to do with your milk

tamarto · 18/09/2008 14:04

Monopoly = Board game king!

zippitippitoes · 18/09/2008 14:04

that is the distinction i was trying to make effie

there is a real difference in coke and breastfeeding in that it presents a real immediate and actual danger in that yoiur baby may not be able to breathe

Rhubarb · 18/09/2008 14:05

I should hope not ParCark! Cluedo is a very serious business you know!

Really though, if you don't drink then I respect you for that. It actually takes a strong person to justify these days why they DON'T drink. But you also have to understand that it's possible to go out occasionally, have a few drinks and a laugh and still be a great parent. In fact I think I'm a better parent for being able to be myself every now and then too. I'm a very social person and I need to get away from family every now and then to be with friends, meeting new people and chatting away about anything and everything. Drinks helps to loosen me up, I like the taste of it and I like getting woozy. I have some fantastic memories of drink induced nights out and the bonding sessions with friends.

Doesn't make me an alcoholic or a bad parent though.

cupsoftea · 18/09/2008 14:05

tomarto - quite right

(I like the secret passages in cluedo!!)

Mum2Oliver, why do you need someone to drive? If there's an emergency surely you'd phone for an ambulance?

Rhubarb · 18/09/2008 14:08

Well I'm abstaining from sex. So I'm even better! Nerrrr!

2beornot2be · 18/09/2008 14:08

But what are the effects I know it cant be good for a baby but I do not have a clue as what kind of effects it can have and yes people would stop and think more about there actions whilst breast feeding if it was more shoved in our faces illegal drug or not we know that people take it so for that reason alone we should know how much it can effect the people around us.

It would be useful to have any public info on bf - tv, mags, posters - never see any info apart from the docs waiting room where there is a poster.

Mum2OliverJames · 18/09/2008 14:10

well i dont have a car anyway because XP took it went i kicked him out so i guess it doesnt really make any difference, but i would have prob have stayed sober with DS in the house because then if anything happens i wouldnt have to wait for an ambulance to get there before starting the journy to the hospital.

But i can be a little bit overprotective of my DC

Rhubarb · 18/09/2008 14:11

Well you owe me a tenner for usage of my quote. I ain't cheap you know!

2beornot2be · 18/09/2008 14:12

M2OJ I am sure you said yesterday you don't drink in your thread when you was trying to get people banned from smoking outside.

lulumama · 18/09/2008 14:13

" cupsoftea on Thu 18-Sep-08 13:14:13
But Lulumama drink & smoking aren't illegal unlike the drugs mentioned. If it's illegal then it can't be good for a preg/bf mum "

but they are legal. and it is widely known and accpeted that smoking is harmful to the foetus, leading to increased risk of stillbihrt, prem birht, low birth weight and increased likelihood of asthma.

drinking heavily in a sustained way throughout pregnancy is dangerous.

do you think because they are legal, people don;t know the risks or think they are risk free.. that argument does not work if the legal drugs are harmful!!

there is a world of difference however between alcohol and nicotine and an unregulated drug such as cocaine, adulterated with god knows what. plus buying /selling it is going to get you in a hell of a lot of trouble, not to mention it perpetuates all sorts of insidious nastiness . demand for drugs means supply is needed and that has a devastating effect on all sorts of people
