Personnally I don't think its right at all - I think that is something sacred between the mother and the baby!

msdemeanor · 27/08/2008 12:47

I would have certainly considered it if she was unable to feed the baby and she was OK with it.

TheCrackFox · 27/08/2008 12:48

I wouldn't be impressed that someone else had Breast fed any of my babies.

MrsMattie · 27/08/2008 12:49

If the mum's OK with it, fine if not, bloody weird thing to do!

BibiThree · 27/08/2008 12:49

surely if you're a breastfeeding mother then you're never too busy to feed your baby?

not meaning to sound as judgey as that obviously does, but how can you be too busy to feed? i didn't breastfeed for long but when i did it never occured to me to ask someone else to do it while i did something else, same as bottle feeding. my job.

although, have nothing against women nursing babies other than their own, got to be better than formula.

MamaG · 27/08/2008 12:51

Its such a personal thing.

Depends on the woman.

In exceptional circumstnaces i can see it might be necessary, with a close friend

2shoes · 27/08/2008 12:51

oh I read this. kate garraway is doing a programme on it. not a case of being to busy. more the woman would be baby sitting for the mum and then feed baby.

beansprout · 27/08/2008 12:52

Why not? Not nearly as odd as given pig's milk or say, cow's milk!!

cadelaide · 27/08/2008 12:52

My gut reaction is that I'd be fine if a friend fed my baby, and I'd happily do the same.

Thinking further.....close friends only. Not necessarily logical, more instinct.

slim22 · 27/08/2008 12:53

not unless she asked you to.

And it would take extraordinary circumstances for me to let someone bf my baby

purplemonkeydishwasher · 27/08/2008 12:54

oh that reminds me! was there a thread about the photo of Kate watzername in yesterday's paper? (not sure which one but in the photo it looked like she was nursing a calf. )

lilymolly · 27/08/2008 12:54

Oh no no no no no no wayyyyyyyyyyy

but you will get the breast feeding brigade on here any minute telling us that it is fine and better than any formula etc etc etc [zzzzzzzzz]

You know who you are

Romy7 · 27/08/2008 12:54

so you could hire yourself out as a wet nurse, complete with crb and hiv certificate?!

funny how things come round, eh?

morningpaper · 27/08/2008 12:55

I honestly don't see why not

If it such a sacred bond oops then I assume you would be horrified to hear that people feed babies the milk from another species!

TrinityRhino · 27/08/2008 12:55

dont see any problem with it myself

lilymolly · 27/08/2008 12:55

p.s just to let you know

It would be extremely rare for any animal to allow anothers infant to suckle from its teats. It is a mother/infant bond in my very humble opinion and should be sacred to your own child

morningpaper · 27/08/2008 12:56

lol @ purple's

Why are you at Kate G mocking up nursing a calf? That was the whole POINT of the article!

lilymolly · 27/08/2008 12:57

they wont refuse the milk but the teat

BandofMothers · 27/08/2008 12:57

I offered to bf my niece when my sis was having trouble latching her on, to see if it was the baby or her having trouble. I would have bf her if sis had asked or needed me to. It might have been a bit wierd though. I would have done it for a good friend whilst I was bfing, but only if in some need, and not regularly I dont think. Also wouldn't really want anyone else bfing mine unless occasionally whilst I had to be away.

2beornot2be · 27/08/2008 12:58

Hell no I would not let my child be breastfed by anyone other than me not even a relative. Its just wrong

idontbelieveit · 27/08/2008 12:58

She was pretending to nurse the calf to make a point about formula being the milk of a different species and that being weirder than a baby having breastmilk from another human.

I wouldn't have a problem with the milk but i think i might prefer the friend to express the milk and give it to the baby from a bottle.

Oblomov · 27/08/2008 12:59

Another programme to put people off bf, generally.
GREAT.

narkymum · 27/08/2008 13:00

I have a friend that used to belong to a breast feeding circle.
I will admit I was a bit grossed out.
Then one of the mums was in a fatal car crash, the others in that circle took turns in feeding him for about amonth, while the dad grieved. I have always admired my friend for that.

oh

see...i didn't READ the article...i just saw the PHOTO and ASSUMED that it was some BFers are mafia types malarky. appologies to all involved (except Kate watzername...don't particularly care for her)

beansprout · 27/08/2008 13:01

Unfortunately, I think you are right.

Would be good to see a programme about the rise and dominance of formula, and how we got to the point where that is fine but babies having breast milk from another woman is not.
