To think that a size 16 is not fat

roseability · 19/08/2008 21:48

I mean I would say this, as I am surprisingly enough a size 16.

When I was younger I dieted, starved and fought myself into a size 10-12. I just can't be bothered anymore. My DH seems to like my curves and I feel it is only society that deems I should be thinner.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a size 10-12 BTW but I think some women are naturally smaller sizes than others

I want to stand up to all this size 0 shit! Why can't we just be the size we are without feeling inadequate.

What do you all think?
How do you feel about your size?
What is your opinion of other's size?

Am I harking on about nothing or should Mnetters stand up and embrace their curves/lumps/bumps

Is it possible to be average/short height (eg me at 5 foot 4) but large boned?

shootfromthehip · 22/08/2008 13:46

I am a size 16 on top (38 d) and a 12 on the bottom (30 in waist). I am 5ft 10 and 11 stone (even my DH doesn't know that). I am not fat. I am a big woman but am not a fat woman. I put on 5 stone during pregnancy and only just lost it recently. I was a size 20 on top and 18 on the bottom. I WAS fat at that size but it is perfectly possible to be a 16 and not fat. Huff and puff. Oh and I was not gorgeous fat. Nor was I happy.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 22/08/2008 14:01

My sister is size 14-16 and if she was any smaller she would be underweight as she is 6'3" I am 14-18 depending on the shop/cut and a large boned 5'8" and I am overweight but not in my opinion 'fat' - what other peoples opinion is is up to them!

At 32 weeks pg it is very hard to be objective about my current weight and I will be relying on breastfeeding and running around after 3 under 5 too lose the baby weight - an effective diet I have found

I find skinny people unappealing physically I like muscle and curves but that is purely an aesthetic taste and really the important thing is - healthy and active lifestyles. Very difficult for people who are deskbound and working long hours - I am much fitter since giving up work to look after my children. though I am aware that I am meant to be fat and miserable and sitting around watching daytime telly

Kat227 · 16/10/2008 15:06

A tall person say 5.10 or taller would not be fat if they were a size 16. I used to be friends with a very slim girl who was 6ft 1ins and she was a size 16, not fat at all she looked like Elle McPherson.

I am currently a size 12 and I am plump. For my height/build a size 8-10 is optimum.

------------
You do realise that if you scaled down the measurements of a 5ft10 size 16 female to 5ft2 they'd be a size 12. So I don't see how 5ft10 and a size 16 is ok while 5ft2 and a size 12 is plump when they are the exact same proportions!

I think sizes 6-12 are fine for 5ft2, sizes 8-14 for 5ft6 and sizes 10-16 for 5ft10. So size 16 is really only okay for a taller female and even then is on the plump side.

lilacclaire · 16/10/2008 15:57

Hmm, I don't get this about tall people that can be a size 16 and not fat.
Im 5ft 11" and am a size 10 on the bottom and 12 on the top (large norks).
I still have a good bit of lard on my body but don't really want to lose it in case I look too thin in clothes (which I may do already).

Well my jeans I am wearing are a size 10 and my t shirt is a 12 as are all my clothes!
Oh and my back fat and stomach fat are all in rolls as I type!
Maybe I am smaller boned than others?

jumpingbeans · 16/10/2008 16:10

I am not overweight, I am to short. phew, thats okay then

lilacclaire · 16/10/2008 16:15

Lol, thats what my short mother says, just the wrong height for her weight.

jumpingbeans · 16/10/2008 16:23

I am not overweight, I am to short. phew, thats okay then

Mercy · 16/10/2008 16:23

Lilacclaire, I'm very small-boned too (am partly Asian) but I'm a lot shorter than you and wear a size 6/8.

I haven't got a single roll of fat (except under my chin!) - I can't imagine how you could have any.

BellaDonna79 · 16/10/2008 16:29

While there are many things in life a whole lot more important than weight I do think a size 16 is fat.
I'm average height and a size 00/0 here in the US in most clothes, I'm healthy, I eat well, excercise lots and am naturally small framed with non-existant breasts.

If I was a size 16 (a 12 here) I would be fat. I would be unhealthily fat. I think many people (especially young girls/some asian women etc) would be fat more healthy being a 'size 0' than a size 16...

Hmmmmm. Well, I think it is quite big. Fat is a rude word though!

If you are six foot then no, it's not fat.

But I am very short and would feel fat at 14.

lilacclaire · 16/10/2008 16:38

Well all I can say is that my fat seems to sit round my 'middle' which is perhaps why I have belly and back fat, my legs, arms, bum etc are all slim and I don't have a long body which may also contribute to it.
I do eat 'a lot' but also exercise (perhaps not as much as I should) to keep everything in the right place.

titfortwat · 16/10/2008 16:39

I am a size 16 and don't feel fat. Only beacuse I used to be a size 20 and have just lost 2 stone in six months. I am enjoying it at the moment, but I will soon get used to it. I want to lose another couple of stone.

I went on my fisrt diet when I was 8 1/2 stone. I thought I was fat then.

Liffey · 16/10/2008 16:39

Another thing bmi doesn't take into account is bone density. I have always been unable to understand why I'm a half a stone heavier than my Mum, but yet, slimmer. She's just had a bone density scan done and it's not good news. Also, I jog and walk more, and I'm two decades younger, so I have more muscle (I do hope).
But yet, according to BMI I am borderline overweight and my Mum is fine..... except, she's the one who's not fine.

CountessDracula · 16/10/2008 16:40

Belladonna could I just say that the sizes have changed in US/UK - I was in US in the summer - I wear size 14 in Gap here and I was an 8 in the states, not a 10!

I was 8 in other shops too

I think the US is sneakily making sizes bigger...

Elliegant · 16/10/2008 16:48

Im a size 18-20 and 5ft 8" so yes i guess I would be considered fat.

I am active, happy and my DH says I have got a fab figure and he loves it so thats good enough for me.

lilacclaire · 16/10/2008 16:50

Elliegant, I would love to have more 'meat on my bones' for want of a better phrase, to feel more womanly, unfortunately as it all sits around my middle, I look like a barrel with legs .
I've even had breast implants to try and get more curves and would consider lipo round my middle just so I could then put on more weight in the other areas!

Mercy · 16/10/2008 16:51

Liffey, afaik muscle weighs more than fat.

OrmIrian · 16/10/2008 16:51

lilacclaire - I am 5'11. I am a size 12 atm since I've had to stop running for a while. Normally I hover between a 10 and a 12. And I agree that it is perfectly possible to be fat at this size/height. Not huge obviously but with bits of flab here and there. When I'm running regularly that mostly disappears and I'm more toned. But even then I felt fat rather than slim.
