To think that a size 16 is not fat

I mean I would say this, as I am surprisingly enough a size 16.

When I was younger I dieted, starved and fought myself into a size 10-12. I just can't be bothered anymore. My DH seems to like my curves and I feel it is only society that deems I should be thinner.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a size 10-12 BTW but I think some women are naturally smaller sizes than others

I want to stand up to all this size 0 shit! Why can't we just be the size we are without feeling inadequate.

What do you all think?
How do you feel about your size?
What is your opinion of other's size?

Am I harking on about nothing or should Mnetters stand up and embrace their curves/lumps/bumps

kama - who deems your figure boyish?

Again it is a society conceived ideal of what curvy means

I get slightly frustrated when people trot out that BMI doesn't measure the proportion of muscle. Its true it doesn't but be honest on these threads we aren't talking about shot putters or long distance runners or weight lifters. We are talking about normal people who perhaps like me struggle to get to the gym (for a leisurely swim) once a week.
For my height 5 ft 6 the max recommended weight is about 11 st 4, I think thats perfectly generous.

roseability · 19/08/2008 22:13

Yes I admit I am overweight - according to medical society, government, men etc etc

But what if you don't feel overweight in yourself?

I'm a size 18 (& nearly 6') & I am absolutely fine with it.

I am currently losing weight (bf'ing & covering distances with pushchair & sling...). Size 16 would be nice, as some of the online clothes retailers I like don't go above.

But have also been size 22 at a miserable low point in my life (comfort eating & drinking too much in response to general crapness) & size 12/14 (taking loads of speed when I was a student, so again, hardly an exemplar healthy lifestyle).

Basically my size has precious little to do with how happy I am. I just don't think it's all that important.

I think the main worry about being a wee bit overweight ( according to how this is defined) is that weight never tends to stay static unless controlled and being a generous and happy size 16 could easily turn into a not so healthy size 20+ quite quickly.

i would love to be in size 16, atm I am in size 18-20. for my height i think the max weight should be around the 12st mark, I am around 16st,

i have said that as soon as the kids go back to school i will go back to aquacise.

roseability · 19/08/2008 22:23

It is why a lot of women feel down and I feel is a factor (not the only one though) in PND

well im a size 24.

If i culd take apill and wake up tomorrow a size 14 i'd take it. if i woke up a size 10 i'd cry and stuff my face until i got a proper figure.

im a fair bit taller than most women so maybe im lucky.

Im not happy being fat, i just don't allow it to bother me enough to limit what i enjoy eating.

SalBySea · 19/08/2008 22:27

Honestly:

I think it is just as bad to be over weight as it is to be underweight

I HATE HATE HATE when magazines parade out over weight women "celebrating their curves" under the guise of being an antidote to the size zero - IT IS JUST AS BAD. Both are equally unhealthy.

I do not believe that we should normalise obesity, just like I think its wrong to normalise the underweight look

I am on the borderline by the way - I swing slightly between "healthy" and "overweight". I do not want to feel comfortable in my overweight skin, whenever the scales tip that way, because I do not want to allow it to continue!

KatieDD · 19/08/2008 22:29

Hmmm I would say from a health prospective it is, if you're happy then fine but don't kid yourself it's ok, if you want to live a long healthy life then you do owe it to your heart to keep and be fit.

roseability · 19/08/2008 22:30

Good point SalBySea although I have never seen society celebrate curves - maybe I don't read enough magazines!

Do your DH/partners like you the way you are?

SO..... anybody here had any experience of diet pills that works?

Like Lechitin, or GLA or Apple Vinegar or what ever it is called??

Mamazon · 19/08/2008 22:31

but you can be technically overweight and be perfectly healhty.

I know a fitness instructor who wears a size 18!

Just like i am a lot fitter than my size 8 -10 sister.

roseability · 19/08/2008 22:32

My heart is healthy 60-70 bpm and able to run 9 miles!

Funny how a discussion about sizes changes to one about diet pills, although I think Quint is joking slightly.

Diets are crap. They force people to spend even more time thinking about the exact thing they should be spending less time obsessing about. I have lost a stone over the last six months, basically just by making some sensible swops and generally eating less fattening foods. Unless there is a genetic condition or the weight gain is due to some underlying issue or side effect of a medical prescription, eating less generally works really well to lose weight.

hollyandnoah · 19/08/2008 22:38

I was a 16 after ds was born, but i've always been a 10/12. I'm a 12 again, but hated being a 16, at 5ft10 i felt like a bfg.
My sis is a 16 though and only 5ft8 and i think she looks lovely, and suits her figure.

lulurose · 19/08/2008 22:42

Once I go upto size 14 I go over ideal BMI and feel less energetic/healthy. Thats what its about for me really, regardless of dress size its my energy levels. I feel better in a size 12, and feel that is where I should be, if that makes sense.

bran · 19/08/2008 22:42

I think size 16 is a lot bigger than it used to be, so when I was a teenage a size 16 wasn't unhealthily large for me but I'm only one size above it now and I still have 13kg to go before my BMI is only overweight.

hollyandnoah · 19/08/2008 22:45

lulu.
i know what you mean..See if i have an unhealthy dinner like pizza, and then i have a chocolate, i feel crap. If i eat well i feel amazing, want walk everywhere.

bran. I think you are right, theres a vintage shop here and i saw a really funky jacket from the 60's ( this was about 4 year ago) I was a 10 at the time, and the 14 jacket was tight on me.. I think sizes have changed.

ThingOne · 19/08/2008 22:46

I was fat when I was a size 16 but I'm only 5' 2 1/2". I should be a size 10-12.

I heard a survey on the radio saying 22 % of men prefer fat women! Wonder if it`s true....
