to keep a dvd that my 3 year old accidently stole from a supermarket today?

I was shopping at a major supermarket today and had agreed to let dd have a dvd for 5.99. She was holding it in the trolley.

Basically I forgot to give to the check out person to swipe so we didn't pay for it.
I only realised this after I had strapped my other 2 children in to the car and was lifting dd out of the trolley and saw it on her knee.
I didn't want to have to go all the way back in.
I feel a bit guilty, but then again I must have spent thousands of pounds at this shop over the years.

What do you think. AIBU to keep it? Is it stealing? Do I worry too much?

The thread went off a tangent at 22:57 with mention of "deviate" "the masses" and "Let's just say, these days "all human life is here""

I love MN.

policywonk · 12/08/2008 23:36

Quattro, MN was mentioned in some Mothercare literature a while back. Pursuant to this, some Mothercare customers had the sheer nerve to join Mumsnet.

And so it came to pass that Western civilization came to an end.

LittleMissBliss · 12/08/2008 23:37

Talking of the beads thing.

Lots of people steal from work, (which is very wrong, must cost the companies a shed load)

pens
papper clips
staples
paper.

Even a single biro is stealing, right. I'm sure in that case we have all stolen. Even be it a lighter from a friend. Say you left it in your pocket and did not return it.

When i smoked i used to do this all the time. loose morals creeping in again.

It just pisses me off when people are so quick to shout theif as if they've never taken something that they have not payed for. All be it petty.
Off to bed.

IMVHO, unless you grown your own lavender to put in your pillow, and your own rosemanry for erm...rosemarying with - then you should re-evaluate

SparklyGothKat · 12/08/2008 23:37

FFS once again the 'them and us' argurment has come out..

Just because you have been here 4 years Bree doesn't mean you can come across on the moral high ground (BTW I have been here 6 years)

Yes the OP should have returned with the DVD, she was in the carpark and knew she hadn't paid for it. But no need for the snobby comments.

You always pull out the 'I have been here X amount of years' line and yes the 'mothercare effect' but who are you to say that people who are new here or join because of the mothercare cataloge are all thieves or chavs?

Blandmum · 12/08/2008 23:37

Tortington · 12/08/2008 23:38

Custy

I will be seeing him on Sunday (in a very loose sense) will send your regards.

Sometimes... I can sound a bit bossy, but there are a lot of MNers on here who can vouch for the fact that I may have a strong moral code, but I am alright with it.

Tortington · 12/08/2008 23:40

i been here 10 years = it was in binary back then and i used thiszx80 .......i really did have one of those

Quattrocento · 12/08/2008 23:40

Thanks Policy and LOL at Custy.

I freely admit to mumsnetting at work. But then again they pay me for 35 hours a week and I reckon I do about 50 (subtracting MNing at work) so they gain.

I hadn't previously appreciated that all Mothercare customers are thieves. I'm sure I've bought (and paid for) something from there once. Can't think what.

expatinscotland · 12/08/2008 23:41

so, go on then, custy, is 'calmswan' you??!!

snice · 12/08/2008 23:42

FGS is this still rumbling on?

The OP accidently removed a DVD from a shop.

She then deliberately took it home and thus stole it.

It doesn't matter if it was from Tesco/Mothercare/Mr Bloggs the DVD shop it's still stealing. I am surprised by how many people think that if you can get away with it then its ok but perhaps I was brought up differently

expatinscotland · 12/08/2008 23:42

fuck you, custy!! you so know this baby is still making me upchuck!

SparklyGothKat · 12/08/2008 23:43

lilysmummy2007 · 12/08/2008 23:44

few weeks ago i went to very big branch of sainsburys where hubby also happens to work and picked up a basket to get a few bits and noticed they were doing 1/3 of pampers in all sizes, im going on hols soon and do not want to faff about with washing so decided to get 2 packets, but only had basket, so put them on the brakebarof the buggy, at the till was so chuffed i picked up a peppa pig pjs for £3 that totally forgot about the nappies, as soon as i realised even though i was already out of the store i went straight back in even though it was undetected and paid for it, i would not be able to function knowing that it was stolen, but this is only a child, a genuine mistake of innocence and calling it straighfoward theft is really over the top poor thing, bless, and goodomen the best suggestion is the charity box, dont let the comments bother you either, enjoy your dvd

expatinscotland · 12/08/2008 23:44

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 12/08/2008 23:46

SGK

I am off to bed. You have seen massive changes as I have.

There have been several advertising campaigns that have attracted people better suited on other sites.

I don't always pull the I have been here......line.

I mention it when I am pissed off.

But then my defence of MN, when I get the bit between my teeth, is akin to other peoples campaigns.

Amnesty

Red Cross

Insert numerous charities.....
