to be shocked at a 4 day old baby out shopping...

with his mother of course. But - four days after giving birth you should be resting, recovering, letting all your innards get back to where they should be. Surely not marching around a shopping centre?

And even if the mother is OK to be out and about, shouldn't newborns be given bit of time at home to adjust to being born? Mine didn't leave the house for a week, and then only a short walk up the road.

Am I really old fashioned in thinking that a week or two of rest, peace and quiet (and no germs from random strangers) is the normal thing to do with a new baby?

My friend went boating with her 2nd born at about 3 days old.

tiredemma · 29/07/2008 19:52

I took DS2 out at 5 days old.

I felt perfectly fine, he didnt seem to mind.

I got lots of goodies, new clothes etc.

We spent the day at Touchwwod shopping centre in Solihull, walked around all day and had lunch at TGi's- Just me, DP, Ds1 and DS2- it was bliss.

Janos · 29/07/2008 19:53

I was too shell shocked to leave the flat for at least a week...I think

Dottydot · 29/07/2008 19:53

Each to their own... We went to a shopping centre when ds1 was 5 days old - and dp had had a section.

I had a section with ds2 and didn't want to go out for weeks..!

andiem · 29/07/2008 19:53

I got berated in waitrose by someone who said I shouldn't be out with ds2 he was 6 days old I felt like saying yes love and If I don't get some food then we will all starve
was actually just desperate to get out and about for a pootle

yabu. And daft. It's a baby. They are hardy little things! And if the mum feels up to getting out, there's no reason for her to stay in.

beanieb · 29/07/2008 19:54

someone I know gave birth to her child on Saturday just gone, and was out taking her daughter for her first trip in the park. Home birth too

beanieb · 29/07/2008 19:54

out today I mean...

Amethyst86 · 29/07/2008 19:55

Oh and we drove down to the Littlehampton to with dd to show her the sea for the first time when she was only two weeks old.

Amethyst86 · 29/07/2008 19:56

Just Littlehampton not "the Littlehampton" likes its a big Landmark or something.

Mum07 · 29/07/2008 19:56

Shops might be full of EVIL people with GERMS but i bet there are a damn sight more in HOSPITAL!

i would have been out if i hadn't had a c-section and didn't live at the bottom of the steepest hill in herts!

at SEA

you've got to build independence from an early age. No use mollycoddling them.

sorry, but YABU - entirely a matter of choice. perhaps she didn't know what flavour she was having and needed to get some boy things? I was in sainsburys after 3 days - to be fair it hurt a bit ( i had inflamed veins), but I wasn't going to let DH go shopping - I was b/f - I needed to eat REAL food!!

Mum07 · 29/07/2008 19:58

I can't believe perfect strangers feel they have the right to tell you what's acceptable about leaving the house with a newborn... when is it OK then? 2 weeks, 3?

onepieceoflollipop · 29/07/2008 19:58

at berated in Waitrose. Some people are so rude and nosy!

I personally would have been climbing the walls if had to stay in for days on end. (I did rest - changed into pjs and got boob out if the ils made noises about visiting. )

DD went on the school run the day after she was born, and we were both fine. In fact the following week we had to do an hour long bus journey to hospital for her thyroid blood tests and we were fine with that too (but she was third-and-incredibly-neglected child )

Some people need more time than others - for me it was a relief to leave the flat as the DCs always slept when we travelled, so walking around with them sleeping was a break from sitting with my feet up with them crying

I took DS to the pub for lunch at 6 days. We still treasure those 'first visit to the pub' photos.

theSuburbanDryad · 29/07/2008 20:02

Where is the OP gone?

andiem · 29/07/2008 20:03

I know in waitrose if it had been tesco now that I could have understood
