Was told off nastily for being 'patronising' at a BBQ tonight - sorry long and rambling

because I gave my stock explaination of the musical intrument that I play viz 'a cornet, resembles a small trumpet'.

I have never met this woman before, she is a new neighbour of our friends, so was involving her and her DH in the convo only to be told sharply that she knew what a cornet is and not to be 'so bloody patronising'

I use this stock explaination as IME not many people know what a bloody cornet is FGS.

I carried on mingling and handing round the twigletts when I returned to the room she was in she started on at me again for being 'bloody patronising' so I made my apologies to the hosts, gathered up my family and made for the door. Whereupon said guest stopped me in the hallway and said 'off to play our cornet, are we' in such a sarcastic tone that even DP looked askance (he has zero social antennae lol)

I kind of brushed past with my 'social smile' resisiting the urge to take her by the ears and introduce her face to my knee [joke]

So.......... was I being unreasonable to leave party, leaving an awkward and upsetting encounter ?

I intend to ring the hosts in the morning to apolgise for early bath

cod, you are really weird sometimes

Niecie · 06/07/2008 13:13

She is a cow.

Go round to her house tonight and serenade her from the pavement with your cornet.

Tell her that since she is so familiar with it, you thought she might enjoy it.

lilolilmanchester · 06/07/2008 13:40

you should know by now, threads are only allowed to go on and on if Cod started them.
If you're bored with it Cod, stop reading. Everyone else seems to be enjoying the thread.

Sidge · 06/07/2008 13:47

I think you should go round to her house and stand outside playing on your cornet (preferably with full band accompaniment) whilst getting someone to hold up this poster.

TheLordFlasheart · 06/07/2008 13:49

Yes, you were being patronising. Why presume that no one knows what a bleeding cornet is?
You didn't like her behaviour but expected her to put up with your superior little attitude, sounds like you got what you deserved to me.

bergentulip · 06/07/2008 13:54

I think it was a little patronising to immediately explain what a cornet is, without being asked. It does somewhat suggest that you think everyone is not as well informed as you are.

I would personally always wait to be asked, and assume people do know. ALways more polite to assume more intelligence than less.

Having said that, her reaction was ever so slightly out of proportion and a bit mad!

lilolilmanchester · 06/07/2008 13:55

Even if she was being patronising, TheLordFlasheart, the woman could have made the point once. But seems she couldn't let it go, and had also been rude to everyone else. Most polite folk, even if they found something patronising, wouldn't say so anyway - just would go and find someone else to talk to.

theSuburbanDryad · 06/07/2008 13:58

But mad neighbour lady was MAD!! Baldy phoned her friend and apologised for leaving early and her friend confirmed it.

LordFlasheart - are you, in fact, mad neighbour lady??

limecrush · 06/07/2008 13:58

eeek LordFlasheart, ever get harsh?

'you got what you deserved'??

sounds as if you graduated from the same charm school as the lovely lady guest!!

JoshandJamie · 06/07/2008 14:00

Perhaps you could have said: 'Oh thank God you know what a cornet is as you appear to have one stuck up your arse and you're blowing hot air out of it.'

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2008 14:13

It's interesting to hear that the Awful Woman had been unpleasant to just about everyone there. So curious to know what drives people like that! Unfathomable!

SheikYerbouti · 06/07/2008 14:14

TheLordFlasheart, I have seen a couple of your posts on here, and it seems that you have just joined this form to be obtuse and inflammatory, which is more than a wee bit sad.

Is your homework not challenging you enough? What a shame.

if you are a "real" poster then you should stop being such a coward and post that under your proper name.

[I have PMT. Raging PMT]

DANCESwithLordPottingtonSmythe · 06/07/2008 19:38

LAPIN! That was brilliant! Really made me laugh, even dh had to stop watching the tennis to find out what was so funny. Genius.

tigermoth · 06/07/2008 19:38

hmm, this reminds me of a party I went to where the hostess insulted all her guests (including me) one by one.

She was offering me some of her old clothes(unbidden)as she could see that we were the same size (host was at least 2 sizes bigger than me). She handed my dh a half drunk bottle of cheapo supermarket whisky as a christmas present as she was sure he'd like it. Dh and I made an exit shortly after this - on our way out we found another guest in the kitchen in tears about something the hostess had said about her son.

Soon after, the hostess got help for her drink problem. I have seen her since at social gatherings and she is fine, though I am wary.

She was not a happy woman at the party - it was very obvious she was far from sober and was not in control.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 06/07/2008 22:34

Cor, had to watch the tennis and do tidy up

(lovely lunch , ta Mum)

So the consensus is that mad woman was a loon and I should keep a list of witty rejoinders for any future encounters (that's when you need a rapier retort quick-smart)
