To be raging that my DD6 just lost her brand new jazz shoe

ElfinsMum · Today 06:08

I bought them for her 2 days ago. Forty quid for a tiny (ugly) pair of shoes. She did one class in them. Will have to replace immediately because we are two weeks from the big annual concert.

I actually cried in the middle of the reception area at the dance studio out of the sheer frustration. The teenage dance teacher couldn't have given fewer fucks.

Go on: hit me up with your best tales of stuff your kids have lost!!

Did I say that I made them scared? My eldest lost his PE kit when he was about six. He told me but I had no money to buy a replacement for a week or two so did PE in other shorts or tshirt. School were fine but he didn’t like being different. I explained that actions have consequences so we have to look after things so he understood. He wasn’t in trouble. I explained that I went to work to earn money to buy things then came home and did chores. He decided on his consequence of helping me with chores. That stuck with me through his and his siblings childhood and it worked.

At 14 yo my eldest lost his school tie and came home and told me. He knew he’d have to pay or help me with chore so he went to lost property and found a tie. He said there were lots in there. Might’ve been his, might not but it made him find a solution. If you’re an automatically buy a replacement parent then you’ve just lost money and your child wont worry about finding a replacement or losing their things.

DS did the tie thing at the same age, luckily I had a spare.
A couple of weeks later at the school Macmillan coffee morning I was talking to a teacher who happily told us of the ties she collected on her way home from school most days and put them in her office. " None of them labelled" eye roll.
I told her DS had recently lost a tie , so she brought her collection from her office to show me.
I was able to identify my son's tie, with his name written on the lining inside. 😁
They're stupid clip on ties, I'm not surprised they get lost.

I have two asd adhd kids and they loose break everything 24/7. Our worst was when they broke 3 TV in a week (we were in lock downs so I was desperate and rebrought tvs other wise they would have gone without). They both lost their hats the first week of school. They loose jumpers, one lost his school bag, how the hell do you loose a giant school bag. They loose drink bottles, lunch boxes (and I buy the nice stainless steel ones). Probably 1000 soccer balls. One kicked his brand new football straight in rhe roof. For now I try and just buy simple cheap items so i can buy multiples. They only get one type of navy socks so i can buy 20 pairs and never have to match them.
they have lost soccer boots (i guess similar to ballet shoes) so i only buy second hand so they can have multiple pairs.
if its a really expensive item i put in an air tag.

I’ve already told our oldest if he loses his retainers I’ll glue in the second set 🤣

When I was a teenager, my retainers fell out of my bag on the driveway a day or so after I got them (I hadn’t zipped them in there securely 😬) and my mum drove over them 😆

LaurelCanyo · Today 09:34

Hasn’t the dance teacher got a box of old donated pairs? They would do until the odd one resurfaces.

TinselAngel · Today 09:37

M daughter used to lose school jumpers (at secondary school) until I made her start paying for them out of her pocket money, but that’s probably not a solution for a six year old!

user47639820987 · Today 09:38

DD’s bestie lost her brand new expensive coat on the first wear at primary school when they were about 7ish - the kicker is her mum was the teaching assistant in the same class, even with constant parental supervision, gone!

At secondary one boy lost a 2.5k musical instrument - couldn’t recall where he’d last seen it.

6 is too young, but I used to make ours pay towards any carelessly lost items once they were at secondary. Hate to think how many school jumpers went missing, although I also remember overhearing one of the other parents telling their DC to just grab a jumper off the wall, we can cut the label out…I wrote their name in with biro after that😂

OrdinaryGirl · Today 09:38

I feel your pain OP. There ought to be a special word for the impotent, pointless rage this generates. DS1 (12 at the time) left his Nike Airforce 1 school shoes in the changing rooms after PE. Weirdly they were not handed into Lost Property 🙃

Wherehavealltbeflowersgone · Today 09:41

My grandson, 8, took a brand new 'posh' waterbottle (£25!) in to school, and 'lost' it first day. My DD had finally given in and bought it for him. He has also lost just one shoe at school, and countless other things.

Wherehavealltbeflowersgone · Today 09:48

And I have lost a necklace my DD gave to me on her wedding day. I never loose things so this was painful.

OneHazelBird · Today 09:49

YANBU to be frustrated but you know exactly where and when it was lost.

If it’s not in the building then obviously one of the other kids has accidentally taken it home.

Put a message on the Facebook group or whatever and you’ll get it back.

ToffeePennie · Today 09:57

I know it’s not helpful right now, but my son has a habit of loosing jazz shoes just before a performance too. I stamped his name into them in big white letters and they somehow have found their way home ever since. I also bought him a “shoe saver bag” which is just a travel case for shoes but he now has to count them in and out of the bag every time. So that helps.
However, he lost his gum shield the other day. And now he’s doing U9s rugby, he has to wear one; no guard no game. So that was really fucking annoying. It turned up eventually in his dad’s jumper pocket that he had been wearing….

My son last year went to London on a weekend with the Scouts (he was 19) and lost his wallet and all his cards. No harm done, cancelled them all and ordered more. A week later we were going on a cruise. The cards arrived just as we were leaving to go to the port. He bought a new wallet en route. All good. Checked in at port, went to loo etc. literally about to board ship and a tannoy announcement came out “if there’s a gentleman who’s lost his wallet in the toilets please let us know”. Yep guess who. At least he got it back but ffs!

I can’t find my late grandmother’s engagement ring. I wore it on my wedding day eight years ago. My parents gave it to me to pass onto my daughter. I can’t find it anywhere yet I know I kept it safe (so I thought).

I daren’t tell anyone and hope it turns up.

My husband lost his wedding ring. It turned up a year or so later inside a gardening glove he hadn't used in ages, so don't give up hope!

ThePerfectStormBird · Today 10:03

I always measure this stuff against how irreplaceable my kids are to how easy it is to replace a shoe and have gratitude. I’m coming from that place because my child did have a serious accident, and so I lived the horror of that, and now anything else , like shit getting lost or broken is absolutely inconsequential to me.

trapdooragain · Today 10:09

BugJuice · Today 07:09

It’ll turn up then.

You wish I labeled my sons lunch box big black marker across the back someone stole it and left there ratted one in its place she took it home used stain remover to get it off and claimed it was theirs all along seriously you could still the ghost of his name nursery said they couldn't do anything she was fucking smirking (honestly didn't even think that was a thing outside bad novels) I said well if your so poor you need to rob a child you should keep it she went nuts told me I can have it etc etc i said no no ive got a replacement do try not to pick it up by accident the staff later sent out an announcement saying they would deal with property disputes differently from then onwards (apparently the fact that I was pregnant stopped her from hitting me she was very vocal to her friends who were not as sympathetic as she would have hoped)

Then there was the time he came home in someone else's shoes how do you not notice your child cant fit into the shoes on his feet? I noticed my son looking like he had clown shoes on 😂🙄

My son's entire PE kit went missing at school, when he was in Year 3 or 4. All named. Teacher didn't give two hoots. I wasn't allowed in school to help him look (even though I'm DBS cleared and work for the same Trust! 🙄). It turned up half a term later...another child had stuffed my son's kit and trainers into his own PE bag!! How he didn't notice I have no idea! The Mum noticed when he brought home a very stuffed, heavy PE bag! Of course, I'd had to go out and buy an entire new kit (some I managed to buy secondhand). I was not impressed.

I lost my entire PE kit when I was 11. My father was furious, shouted at me for being careless. I knew I wasn’t. Two terms later, I was in an outbuilding where I didn’t normally have a class and it was hanging from a peg by the door. I recognised the bag immediately. Everything was in it. It had obviously just been moved by some little shit.

Got my daughter a very lovely pair of summer shoes to go with various summer dresses and a flower girl dress. She was four. She had worn them twice, went outside into the trampoline, left them there and a fox chewed one of them to shreds. Only one. Was gutted as I spent more that I normally would and they were just so cute.

It will turn up. A ghostie is having fun with you. Thats the only rational explanation. 😆⁶

Not kids, but my mother?!

I needed to travel away urgently at short notice on business but I was expecting an important delivery that I needed to take with me. I got notification that it was delayed and wouldn't arrive until after I'd left. I diverted the delivery to a post office collection point so that my mum could collect it on my behalf. They needed something like a driving licence or passport for ID so I left my driving licence with her.

She collected the item and then forwarded it on to me by post. I opened the box, took out the item, threw away the packaging in a huge recycling bin at the commercial premises where I was working.

She texted me about three days later to check it had arrived safely. I said yes it had, and she said 'And did you find your driving licence?'

'What?! No! Where was it?'

'I hid it between the folds of packaging that were protecting the [item] in the box.'

'What? Why the hell would hide it, without telling me first?!!'

Well I was worried someone might nick the parcel and open it so I didn't want them to take your driving licence too. I figured they probably wouldn't have found it hidden in the wrapping.'

'Yes but mum, I didn't find it either! Aaaargh!!!'

I rummaged in the enormous commercial recycling bin, took out all the cardboard, but no luck.

Yep I can join you in the "My kid broke the TV" club. DS threw a hairbrush at it in anger. He was very shocked.

For the "set consequences" brigade: we did wait a full two weeks with no TV before we replaced it.

That reminds me of me aged 14 at Gatwick travelling on the school French exchange. We were all made to sit on a patch of carpet to eat our packed lunches but only I was called back over the tannoy because I'd left my (brand new) passport on the floor!!

As they are jazz shoes (rather than flats, for example), I think I would send my daughter in wearing them and wait outside with her outdoor shoes so she didn't have to take them off at all while in class.

LondonLass2026 · Today 10:55

Many years ago my son (then aged about 13) wanted to join my gym (for a Taekwondo class). The gym was under a minute walk from our house, on a quiet residential street, so no distractions or need to cross any roads.

It cost £20 joining fee, then subsidised thereafter as I was a member. He said he'd walk down with the cash, so I gave it to him and off he went.

Only to come back 5 minutes later. "I lost the money".

We laugh about it now, but I was furious at the time! He used to tend to be very scatty and disorganised and I know he will have just dropped it.

She does 3 classes back to back of which Jazz is the middle. It is tough tbf as she has to change twice and she's only 6. There's a little gang of them that do it together.

Thanks guys - hearing of others' pain is helping!!
